The Time Is Now: Empowering Nurses In Electoral Politics, Sharon Pearce Jan 2021

The Time Is Now: Empowering Nurses In Electoral Politics, Sharon Pearce

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Despite having an intimate knowledge of healthcare and possessing many capabilities that could easily translate to politics, very few nurses serve in political office in the United States. Resources such as a candidate training program that capitalizes on nurses' particular skills to prepare and assist them to run for elected office are practically nonexistent.A Campaign School for Nurses and Midwives was developed to recruit, train, motivate, and support registered nurses to run for elected office at the local, state, or federal levels. The Campaign School was to have been piloted at Yale School of Nursing in 2020 but was canceled …

The Future Of Leadership Training: An Immersive Web-Based Program Enhancing Nurse’S Critical Soft Leadership Skills In New Healthcare Contexts, Nina Vaid Raoji Jan 2021

The Future Of Leadership Training: An Immersive Web-Based Program Enhancing Nurse’S Critical Soft Leadership Skills In New Healthcare Contexts, Nina Vaid Raoji

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

As the care of health shifts to a more decentralized model of care, it essential that the role of nursing facilitates new paths to meeting patients and communities where they are in the context of their lives, forging new partnerships outside of the traditional health care setting, and focusing on advocating for collective upstream solutions (Pittman, 2020). However, this shift requires a set of skills that are not a focus of current nurse leadership training. These are Soft Leadership Skills: networking, communication, teamwork, and innovation/creativity, but not in the traditional sense of the terms (Rao, 2017). The goal of this …

Establishing A Peer Supported Second Victim Program For Healthcare Providers: Team Heal, Renee N. Rathbun Jan 2021

Establishing A Peer Supported Second Victim Program For Healthcare Providers: Team Heal, Renee N. Rathbun

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Medical errors and adverse events in healthcare resulting in serious patient harm have a substantial impact on patients, families, healthcare providers, and healthcare organizations (Coughlan, Powell and Higgins 2017, Dukhanin et al., 2018). When adverse events occur, the patient and often family members are the “first victims.” However, less attention is given to the healthcare providers known as the “second victims.” Involvement in adverse events leading to patient injury can leave healthcare providers traumatized with emotional distress. Healthcare professionals frequently suffer in silence, experiencing feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, depression, guilt, isolation, and shame (Edrees et al., 2016a). Although the …

Decreasing 30-Day Readmission Rates In Patients With Heart Failure, Nancy Rizzuto Jan 2021

Decreasing 30-Day Readmission Rates In Patients With Heart Failure, Nancy Rizzuto

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Abstract: Heart Failure is one of the leading causes of hospital readmissions. Heart Failure affects approximately 6.2 million adults in the United States and costs the nation an estimated $30.7 billion each year (Farmarkis, 2017). Prevalence is projected to increase 25% by 2030 (Savarese, 2017). Approximately 50% of patients who are discharged are readmitted within 6 months and 24% within 30 days (Desai & Stevenson, 2012). About half the population with heart failure dies within 5 years of diagnosis (CDC, 2016). Despite advances in the treatment of heart failure, patient optimization remains a challenge for health care providers. The initiation …

From Bedside To Mountainside: Preparing New Nurse Practitioners For Advanced Clinical Skills In Remote Settings Using A Novel Training Program, Benjamin Woodard Jan 2021

From Bedside To Mountainside: Preparing New Nurse Practitioners For Advanced Clinical Skills In Remote Settings Using A Novel Training Program, Benjamin Woodard

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

The purpose of this doctoral project was to develop and pilot an expert-panel validated training program specifically for nurse practitioners (NPs) in remote settings, and to evaluate how new remote NPs rate their self-efficacy (a measure of confidence) in performing specific advanced clinical skills and procedures (ACSPs) before and after completing this program. The practice of primary care in remote regions requires expanded clinical skills for high acuity scenarios given the isolation. With more new primary care NPs practicing in more remote locales, their preparation for performing ACSPs, (including in complex and high-acuity cases) is critical for safe and effective …

Modeling Black Literature: Behind The Screen With The Black Bibliography Project, Brenna Bychowski, Melissa Barton Jan 2021

Modeling Black Literature: Behind The Screen With The Black Bibliography Project, Brenna Bychowski, Melissa Barton

Library Staff Publications

The Black Bibliography Project (BBP) plans to produce a bibliographic database of printed works by Black writers from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. With the support of the Beinecke Library and a grant from the Mellon Foundation, project co-PIs and codirectors Jacqueline Goldsby and Meredith McGill collaborated with a team of librarians from Yale to develop the data model for their database. Drawing on Beinecke’s James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection to pull case studies, the team of librarians developed a Linked Data model for BBP in an instance of Wikibase and trained and supported a group of graduate student …

Regulatory Agency Capture: How The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Approved The Mountain Valley Pipeline, Aakshi Agarwal Jan 2021

Regulatory Agency Capture: How The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Approved The Mountain Valley Pipeline, Aakshi Agarwal

Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award

The FERC’s history of approving nearly 100% of pipelines and divisive pipeline cases like the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline have driven landowners’ long-standing claims of regulatory agency capture of the FERC. The present research substantiates the claim of capture with a case study of the Mountain Valley Pipeline and uncovers that the FERC is both culturally and corrosively captured. This research also suggests that the capture of the FERC began at its conception during the natural gas crisis and subsequent natural gas bubble, which caused the FERC to follow the industry’s lead. These findings indicate that the …
