Complications Of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 Use In Open Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion, Allison Miller
Complications Of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 Use In Open Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion, Allison Miller
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion is commonly performed with the use of off-label recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2. Despite its widespread use, bone morphogenetic protein-2 has been linked with postoperative complications in observational studies. However, no experimental study has supported this association nor has the relative risk as compared to iliac crest bone graft been quantified. In this study, we will compare the incidence proportion of radiculopathy, heterotopic ossification, and vertebral endplate osteolysis following Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion in patients who receive recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 versus patients who receive iliac crest bone graft. Specifically, we will carry out a …
Back To Basics: The Effects Of Buffered Crystalloids On Mortality In The Setting Of Severe Trauma, David Seth Murphy
Back To Basics: The Effects Of Buffered Crystalloids On Mortality In The Setting Of Severe Trauma, David Seth Murphy
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Trauma is the leading cause of death for people between 0 and 45 years of age. An important step in the management of trauma patients is the replacement of a large volume of fluids, typically with normal saline. However, normal saline has been implicated in the development of metabolic derangements that may contribute to a large proportion of deaths in trauma patients. In this study, we will examine whether less acidic solutions that contain buffers can improve survival in trauma patients compared to normal saline. We will perform a double-blind randomized control trial to determine whether fluid replacement with Lactated …
Preventing Postpartum Preeclampsia With Low-Dose Aspirin: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Katrina Jimenez
Preventing Postpartum Preeclampsia With Low-Dose Aspirin: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Katrina Jimenez
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Preeclampsia, defined as new or worsening hypertension along with new onset proteinuria and/or end organ damage throughout pregnancy, is one of the leading causes of perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Antepartum preeclampsia has been extensively studied, and prophylaxis with 81mg aspirin starting between 12- and 16-weeks’ gestation is the current standard for prevention. However, little is known about the prevention of new onset postpartum preeclampsia, which can present up to 6 weeks postpartum. In this study, we will evaluate the efficacy of aspirin in preventing the incidence of new onset postpartum preeclampsia. Using a randomized controlled trial, we will …
Guidelines For Influenza Vaccination Uptake In Pregnant Women: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial, Jenna R. Moscarelli
Guidelines For Influenza Vaccination Uptake In Pregnant Women: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial, Jenna R. Moscarelli
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Influenza infection during pregnancy poses unique risks to pregnant women and infants, including severe symptoms and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, many pregnant women do not receive the influenza vaccination. Reasons for low vaccine uptake are multifactorial, with the lack of a healthcare provider’s recommendation being a critical barrier. In this cluster-randomized controlled trial, we will examine the effect of a structured vaccine recommendation program for obstetric providers on the mean proportion of pregnant women who receive the influenza vaccination. Specifically, this trial will use a custom provider education program based …
The Effects Of Yoga Versus Mindfulness On Anxiety In Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease, Winifred Tung
The Effects Of Yoga Versus Mindfulness On Anxiety In Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease, Winifred Tung
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes debilitating motor deficits in addition to many non-motor symptoms. Tremors, stiffness, and abnormal gait changes are easily recognized as disabling; however, effects from anxiety are more insidious to disease burden which negatively affect both motor and psychological capabilities. Anxiolytics or antidepressants are often prescribed but can cause adverse side effects, prompting the need for alternative treatments. Yoga and mindfulness therapies are favorable alternative treatments known to reduce anxiety. This two-arm, single-blinded randomized controlled trial compares effects of yoga and mindfulness therapies in the reduction of anxiety for patients with Parkinson’s disease. …
Space-Praxis: Towards A Feminist Politics Of Design, Mary C. Overholt
Space-Praxis: Towards A Feminist Politics Of Design, Mary C. Overholt
Masters of Environmental Design Theses
Outside of the academy and professionalized practice, design has long been central to the production of feminist, political projects. Taking what I have termed space-praxis as its central analytic, this project explores a suite of feminist interventions into the built environment—ranging from the late 1960s to present day.
Formulated in response to Michel de Certeau’s theory of spatial practices, space-praxis collapses formerly bifurcated definitions of ‘tactic’/‘strategy’ and ‘theory’/‘practice.’ It gestures towards those unruly, situated undertakings that are embedded in an ever-evolving, liberative politics. In turning outwards, away from the so-called masters of architecture, this thesis orients itself toward everyday practitioners …

Background: A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that face masks can slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, but mask usage remains low across many parts of the world, and strategies to increase mask usage remain untested and unclear. Methods: We conducted a cluster-randomized trial of community-level mask promotion in rural Bangladesh involving 341,830 adults in 600 villages. We employed a series of strategies to promote mask usage, including free household distribution of surgical or cloth masks, distribution and promotion at markets and mosques, mask advocacy by Imams during Friday prayers, role modeling by local leaders, promoters …

Background: Mask usage remains low across many parts of the world during the COVID- 19 pandemic, and strategies to increase mask-wearing remain untested. Our objectives were to identify strategies that can persistently increase mask-wearing and assess the impact of increasing mask-wearing on symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections. Methods: We conducted a cluster-randomized trial of community-level mask promotion in rural Bangladesh from November 2020 to April 2021 (N=600 villages, N=342,126 adults). We cross-randomized mask promotion strategies at the village and household level, including cloth vs. surgical masks. All intervention arms received free masks, information on the importance of masking, role modeling by community …
