Higher Ground: Rev. Dr. William Barber Ii And The Political Content Of Prophetic Form, Braxton D. Shelley
Higher Ground: Rev. Dr. William Barber Ii And The Political Content Of Prophetic Form, Braxton D. Shelley
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
This essay argues that Rev. Dr. William J. Barber’s message on “Higher Ground,” a speech delivered at a massive 2014 protest rally, reveals his intentional problematization of distinctions between the sacred and the secular. As Barber’s articulation of what Ashon Crawley calls “Blackpentecostal breath” spill over the boundaries posited by conventional categories—they are too ecstatic to be ordinary speeches, and too political to be traditional sermons—these plural expressions identify themselves as sounds that come from another world. If both content and form are understood as thought, it becomes apparent that these prophetic utterances critique the oppression wrought by contemporary social …
Singing And Sensing The Unknown: An Embodied History Of Hindu Practice In Ghana, Shobana Shankar
Singing And Sensing The Unknown: An Embodied History Of Hindu Practice In Ghana, Shobana Shankar
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Hinduism fits well into the “sound-filled” West African religious soundscape, which is a scene of competition and conflict. This article explores the soundscape of devotional singing, mantras, and prayers as a central part of the embodiment and embedment of Hinduism among Africans in Ghana, where the Indian diaspora has been relatively small and the indigenous movement of Hinduism entirely through African initiative. Using ethnographic and written sources to examine the Hindu Monastery of Africa, founded by the Ghanaian monk Swami Ghanananda in 1975, I examine how the oral and aural popular devotions crafted by the swami have shifted attention away …
The Mediated Qur’An: Religious Education And Recitation Via Online Distance Learning In The Sultanate Of Oman, Lauren Osborne
The Mediated Qur’An: Religious Education And Recitation Via Online Distance Learning In The Sultanate Of Oman, Lauren Osborne
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
This article considers the role of media in relation to memorization and recitation of the Qur’an and modern religious education. Specifically, it considers the example of the online program of distance learning for recitation and memorization of the Qur’an as developed and maintained under the auspices of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs in the state of Oman in the Arab Gulf region. The online learning program presents an example of how religious education in Oman both has a long history at the same time that it draws on modern media practices. Even further, it does so in the …
A Requiem For The Ussr: From Atheism To Secularity, Oksana Nesterenko
A Requiem For The Ussr: From Atheism To Secularity, Oksana Nesterenko
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
This article examines performance and reception of music of sacred tradition in the Soviet Union in the 1970s-80s, with the focus on two works composed in the genre of Catholic Requiem Mass, Alfred Schnittke’s Requiem (1975) and Vyacheslav Artyomov’s Requiem (1988). The article recounts the history of Soviet atheism that, as a result of state’s failure to eradicate religion, evolved into a form of secular modernity, and outlines the music culture in which Schnittke and Artyomov lived. The official reception of the two requiems, which changed dramatically within twelve years, illustrates the state’s changing attitude to religion from atheist, where …
“Beer & Hymns” And Community: Religious Identity And Participatory Sing-Alongs, Andrew Mall
“Beer & Hymns” And Community: Religious Identity And Participatory Sing-Alongs, Andrew Mall
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
As a series of loosely-organized events, “Beer & Hymns” started at the Greenbelt Festival in England in 2006 and migrated to the Wild Goose Festival in North Carolina in 2012. Local Beer & Hymns gatherings meet at bars, breweries, clubs, and pubs across the U.K., the U.S., and around the world. Most are not affiliated with a church or Christian denomination, instead relying on the energy of independent local organizers. Some attendees are regular churchgoers, other are not, but all find community in these sing-alongs—congregational singing, that is, outside of traditional congregational contexts. Beer & Hymns is exactly what it …
Assimilating To Art-Religion: Jewish Secularity And Edgar Zilsel’S Geniereligion (1918), Abigail Fine
Assimilating To Art-Religion: Jewish Secularity And Edgar Zilsel’S Geniereligion (1918), Abigail Fine
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
In 1918, Edgar Zilsel—a Marxist-Jewish philosopher who was soon to be exiled from Vienna—published a sociological study that later readers have found prescient of fascism. In Die Geniereligion (“The Religion of Genius”), Zilsel cautioned against the hidden dangers of elevating secular figures to the status of deities. As early as 1912, Zilsel was disturbed by how art-religion shaped music culture: his earliest published essay ruminated on timelessness and canonicity, on striving for heavenly tones while cast down to the earthly squalor of the concert hall. Indeed, in Zilsel’s Vienna, art-religion had come to dominate the music world—biographers made Beethoven a …

Recorded Maternal Song To Reduce Crying Duration In Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Alecia Cunniff
Recorded Maternal Song To Reduce Crying Duration In Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Alecia Cunniff
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Neonatal abstinence syndrome is a constellation of symptoms that include high pitched crying and irritability resulting from abrupt postnatal cessation of opioid exposure. Maternal recorded song reduces crying duration in preterm and full-term infants. However, the effect of maternal recorded song on crying duration in affected infants is unknown. In this prospective single-blind randomized control trial, we compare the effect of maternal recorded song and ambient noise in reducing crying duration in infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome. We hypothesize that exposure to maternal recorded song will result in a significant difference in mean duration of crying compared to ambient noise …
Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In Adolescents And Young Adults With Substance Use Disorder, Madeline Sadlowski
Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In Adolescents And Young Adults With Substance Use Disorder, Madeline Sadlowski
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Substance use disorder is a condition that affects the brain and results in the inability of a person to manage their substance use. Approximately 9% of adolescents and young adults in the United States suffer from a substance use disorder, and the majority that receive treatment relapse within 6 months. Adolescents and young adults, especially those with low socioeconomic status, have access to fewer resources for treatment. In this study, we will assess an accessible computer-based cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment in adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders as an efficacious and durable treatment. We will use a …
Video Cognitive Behavioral Therapy To Prevent Depression In Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Monica Narsolis
Video Cognitive Behavioral Therapy To Prevent Depression In Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Monica Narsolis
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Inflammatory bowel disease patients have higher rates of depression and anxiety compared to other diseases and the general population, which can lead to a lower quality of life. There is a critical need to investigate treatments for mental health in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Cognitive behavioral therapy is widely studied and has proven effective in improving depression. There are no randomized controlled trials comparing early psychotherapeutic intervention with standard of care for this population. We hypothesize that early initiation of cognitive behavioral therapy will reduce depression and anxiety severity and improve quality of life in newly diagnosed inflammatory bowel …
