“Being Teased Is Almost A Guarantee”: Development And Validation Of The Stress And Weight Stigma Scale (Straws), Julia Michelle Winschel
Public Health Theses
Objective: To validate The Stress and Weight Stigma Scale (STRAWS), a measure developed to assess prolonged activation and anticipatory stress related to experiences of weight stigma among individuals with overweight and obesity. Methods: Based on an existing instrument for prolonged activation and anticipatory race-related stress, the 17-item STRAWS was developed to capture perseverative cognition, secondary appraisal, and anticipatory stress in response to a specific experience of weight stigma. Participants with a range of body mass indices (BMI; kg/m2) and who believed they had experienced weight stigma were recruited using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (n = 301). We used confirmatory factor analysis …
Musculoskeletal Outcomes Among Older Adults Following Hospitalization For Covid-19: A Pilot Study, Clara Ming Hei Wong
Musculoskeletal Outcomes Among Older Adults Following Hospitalization For Covid-19: A Pilot Study, Clara Ming Hei Wong
Public Health Theses
Background Older individuals are at high risk for musculoskeletal impairment following hospitalization due to decreased neuromuscular function and bone mineral density (BMD) arising from illness itself, and external factors such as immobilization and changes in nutritional status. To address the knowledge gap regarding the longitudinal impact of COVID-19 on musculoskeletal outcomes, this thesis aimed to study the relationship between COVID-19 severity and physical functional, incidence of falls and fractures in older adults. Secondarily, in a subset of patients we examined the relationship between COVID-19 severity and osteoporosis- and sarcopenia-related measures. Methods This study analyzed data from the VALIANT study and …
Operationalizing The Unesco Universal Declaration On Bioethics And Human Rights Through A Trans-Cultural Lens: A Qualitative Study With Students In South Korea And The United States, Francis Yang
Public Health Theses
The UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (UDBHR) was a well-intentioned but controversial document. Some scholars appreciated UNESCO’s attempts at providing an internationally recognized set of ethical guidelines. Other critics maintained the UDBHR, in particular Article 12, was yet another representation of Western ideological hegemony and an ill-informed attempt at embracing universality at the expense of diversity. This paper acknowledged this debate but approaches the UDBHR in trans-cultural manner, framing the UDBHR not as an imposing guideline, but as a seed around which dialogue can coalesce. Such dialogue might engage similarities, differences, and nuances between different ethical perspectives, …
Quantitative Real-Time Pcr Assays For The Detection Of Leptospira, Alice Zhao
Quantitative Real-Time Pcr Assays For The Detection Of Leptospira, Alice Zhao
Public Health Theses
Leptospirosis is an infectious zoonotic disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. The genus is comprised of 40 pathogenic species divided among P1 (19) and P2 (21). Leptospirosis incurs a disproportionately large burden of disease in urban slum regions of developing countries that lack adequate sewage disposal, water treatment, and sanitation infrastructure. While P1 species have been identified in cases of human infection, it is unclear if all Leptospira species are capable of infecting humans, especially P2 species. Among P1 species, L. interrogans has been described as the most frequent specie to cause disease in both animals and humans, …
Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfass) In Household Dust From North China: Occurrence, Contribution, And Human Exposure, Yakun Zhou
Public Health Theses
Measurements and analysis of an emerging contaminant of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and adverse health effects associated with PFAS have received increasing attention around the world. In this study, 64 participants’ household dust were collected in Jinan, China during September 2018 and January 2019, conducted as part of the Biomarkers of Air Pollutants Exposure in the Chinese aged 60-69 (China BAPE) study. Concentrations and composition profiles of 7 individual PFASs were determined and estimated daily intakes of PFASs via dust ingestion for children and adults were calculated. By using a dimension reduction method − principal component analysis (PCA) and …
Residential And Race/Ethnicity Disparities In Heat Vulnerability In The United States, Mitchell Manware
Residential And Race/Ethnicity Disparities In Heat Vulnerability In The United States, Mitchell Manware
Public Health Theses
Adverse health outcomes caused by extreme heat represent the most direct human health threat associated with the warming of the Earth’s climate. Socioeconomic, demographic, health, land cover, and temperature determinants contribute to heat vulnerability; however, nationwide patterns of residential and race/ethnicity disparities in heat vulnerability in the United States are poorly understood. This study aimed to develop a Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) for the United States; to assess differences in heat vulnerability across geographies that have experienced historical and/or contemporary forms of marginalization; and to quantify HVI by race/ethnicity. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to calculate census tract level …
Pet Imaging Reveals Reduced Synaptic Density In People With Well-Controlled Hiv Infection, Julian Joseph Weiss
Pet Imaging Reveals Reduced Synaptic Density In People With Well-Controlled Hiv Infection, Julian Joseph Weiss
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Background: Synaptic injury is a pathological hallmark of neurological impairment in people living with HIV (PLWH), a common complication despite viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, there are no biomarkers sensitive to neurocognitive impairment in PLWH. Measurement of synaptic density in living humans may allow better understanding of HIV neuropathogenesis and provide a dynamic biomarker for therapeutic studies. We applied novel synaptic vesical protein 2A (SV2A) positron emission tomographic (PET) imaging to investigate synaptic density in the frontostriatalthalamic region in PLWH and HIV-uninfected (HIV-) participants.
Methods: In this cross-sectional pilot study,13 older male PLWH on ART underwent neurocognitive assessments, …

Efficient Estimation Of Average Derivatives In Npiv Models: Simulation Comparisons Of Neural Network Estimators, Jiafeng Chen, Xiaohong Chen, Elie Tamer
Efficient Estimation Of Average Derivatives In Npiv Models: Simulation Comparisons Of Neural Network Estimators, Jiafeng Chen, Xiaohong Chen, Elie Tamer
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) can be viewed as \emph{nonlinear sieves} that can approximate complex functions of high dimensional variables more effectively than linear sieves. We investigate the computational performance of various ANNs in nonparametric instrumental variables (NPIV) models of moderately high dimensional covariates that are relevant to empirical economics. We present two efficient procedures for estimation and inference on a weighted average derivative (WAD): an orthogonalized plug-in with optimally-weighted sieve minimum distance (OP-OSMD) procedure and a sieve efficient score (ES) procedure. Both estimators for WAD use ANN sieves to approximate the unknown NPIV function and are root-n asymptotically normal …

Linguistic Variation From Cognitive Variability: The Case Of English 'Have', Muye Zhang
Linguistic Variation From Cognitive Variability: The Case Of English 'Have', Muye Zhang
Linguistics Graduate Dissertations
In this dissertation, I seek to construct a model of meaning variation built upon variability in linguistic structure, conceptual structure, and cognitive makeup, and in doing so, exemplify an approach to studying meaning that is both linguistically principled and neuropsychologically grounded. As my test case, I make use of the English lexical item ‘have' by proposing a novel analysis of its meaning based on its well-described variability in English and its embed- ding into crosslinguistically consistent patterns of variation and change.
I support this analysis by investigating its real-time comprehension patterns through behavioral, electropsychophysiological, and hemodynamic brain data, thereby incorporating …
