Documenting Doha: Community Archiving And Collective Memory In Qatar, Sumayya Ahmed

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Heritage experts working in Qatar contend that international museum standards do not allow them to engage with local understandings of history and heritage, thereby acknowledging the disconnect between museums and Qatari collective memory. This article posits that due to the relative absence of relatable representations in international-facing museums, Qataris, building upon a local tradition of private folk museums, are collecting and sharing their heritage materials via social media in forms known in the field of archival studies as “community archiving.” In reviewing examples of Qatari online community archives, it notes correspondences to the characteristics of community archives that have been …

Weak Identification Of Long Memory With Implications For Inference, Peter C. B. Phillips

This paper explores weak identification issues arising in commonly used models of
economic and financial time series. Two highly popular configurations are shown to
be asymptotically observationally equivalent: one with long memory and weak autoregressive dynamics, the other with antipersistent shocks and a near-unit autoregressive
root. We develop a data-driven semiparametric and identification-robust approach to
inference that reveals such ambiguities and documents the prevalence of weak identification in many realized volatility and trading volume series. The identification-robust empirical evidence generally favors long memory dynamics in volatility and volume, a conclusion that is corroborated using social-media news flow data.

Prudential Policy With Distorted Beliefs, Eduardo Dávila, Ansgar Walther

This paper studies leverage regulation when equity investors and/or creditors have distorted beliefs relative to a planner. We characterize how the optimal regulation responds to arbitrary changes in investors’/creditors’ beliefs, relating our results to practical scenarios. We show that the optimal regulation depends on the type and magnitude of such changes. Optimism by investors calls for looser leverage regulation, while optimism by creditors, or jointly by both investors/creditors, calls for tighter leverage regulation. Our results apply to environments with i) planners with imperfect knowledge of investors’/creditors’ beliefs, ii) monetary policy, iii) bailouts and pecuniary externalities, and iv) endogenous beliefs.

Lookalike targeting is a widely used model-based ad targeting approach that uses a seed database of individuals to identify matching “lookalikes” for targeted customer acquisition. An advertiser has to make two key choices: (1) who to seed on and (2) seed-match rank range. First, we find that seeding on others’ journey stage can be effective in new customer acquisition; despite the cold start nature of customer acquisition using Lookalike audiences, third parties can indeed identify factors unobserved to the advertiser that move individuals along the journey and can be correlated with the lookalikes. In the presence of bubbles, asset prices consist of a fundamental and a bubble component, with the bubble component following an explosive dynamic. The general idea for bubble identification is to apply explosive root tests to a proxy of the unobservable bubble. Three notable proxies are the real asset prices, log price-payoff ratios, and estimated non-fundamental components. The rationale for all three proxy choices rests on the definition of bubbles, which has been presented in various forms in the literature. This chapter provides a theoretical framework that incorporates several definitions of bubbles (and fundamentals) and offers guidance for selecting proxies. …

T. W. Anderson did pathbreaking work in econometrics during his remarkable career as an eminent statistician. His primary contributions to econometrics are reviewed here, including his early research on estimation and inference in simultaneous equations models and reduced rank regression. Some of his later works that connect in important ways to econometrics are also briefly covered, including limit theory in explosive autoregression, asymptotic expansions, and exact distribution theory for econometric estimators. In selection processes such as hiring, promotion, and college admissions, implicit bias toward socially-salient attributes such as race, gender, or sexual orientation produces persistent inequality and reduces utility for the decision-maker. Recent works show that interventions like the Rooney Rule, which require a minimum quota of individuals from each affected group, are very effective in improving utility when individuals belong to at most one affected group. However, in several settings, individuals belong to multiple affected groups and, consequently, face more extreme implicit bias due to this intersectionality. The propensity of consumers to engage in word-of-mouth (WOM) can differ after good versus bad experiences, resulting in positive or negative selection of user-generated reviews. We study how the propensity to engage in WOM depends on information available to customers through different marketing channels. We develop a model of WOM in which a target customer makes a purchase decision based on his private brand association, public product-specific information (e.g. from advertising or past reviews) and WOM content, and an early adopter of the new product engages in WOM only if her information is instrumental to the target customer’s purchase decision. …

Kerala, the southwestern state of Independent India, had gained its distinct architectural heritage by the time the British East India Company began colonizing India in the 17th century. Upper caste Nambuthiris and Nayars organized their agrarian homesteads — four-winged courtyard houses with gender as their axis of internal regulation. Although the house layout remained the same, the gendered inhabitation varied based on caste. On their arrival, British colonists began reordering and reshaping this native cosmos into a perceived anglicized 'normative'[1]. The existing political and social terrains were fractured, revised, and reworked to create an anglicized model of society. …

Yingzao referred to the Chinese architectural practice prior to the nineteenth-century introduction of the term jianzhu, the translation of “architecture.” The earliest preserved illustrated government-issued building standard was titled Yingzao fashi. Published by the Southern Song government in 1103, Yingzao fashi defined and regulated technical terms used to describe imperial construction as well as specified the labor costs of certain building techniques. These terms inform our understanding of the traditional Chinese way of categorization and knowledge system of architecture and architectural elements.

Survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest are abysmal and have largely remained unchanged over the last several decades. A recent single center study of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest found that early cannulation with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation could improve mortality rates. It is unclear if these findings are generalizable to and reproducible at other hospitals. The goal of this study is to assess the rate of survival to hospital discharge for patients treated with early extracorporeal membrane oxygenation compared to standard advanced cardiovascular life support. Functional abdominal pain disorders are characterized by disordered bowel motility and hypersensitivity without organic cause. Children who meet the criteria for functional abdominal pain disorders have difficulty managing abdominal pain due to a lack of effective pharmacotherapeutic options. Several in-person alternative therapies have been beneficial for this population, including yoga. However, access barriers and lack of flexibility in therapy structure result in low adherence. Primary hyperparathyroidism is the excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone by one or more parathyroid glands, resulting in hypercalcemia. Primary hyperparathyroidism can be safely cured by parathyroidectomy, but there are well-established racial differences in disease burden at the time of parathyroidectomy with Black patients exhibiting greater serum calcium, parathyroid hormone levels and parathyroid gland size compared to non-Hispanic White patients. However, few studies investigate what factors contribute to these differences. Mindfulness-based interventions have become an increasingly popular and accepted approach to reducing burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress among healthcare professionals. However, the effects of how a mindfulness-based intervention might impact a clinician’s patient care and patient-provider relationship are not known. In this study, we aim to discover if providing healthcare professionals with a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program will improve their patient-provider relationship as indicated by a statistically significant change in Press Ganey patient satisfaction scores.
