In the course of studying several seasons' statistics on the age composition of the commercial catch of the Pacific sardine (Sardinops caerulea) I have found what appears to be a fairly indicative measure of year-class strength in the total number of three-year-old fish caught by commercial fishermen in all Pacific Coast ports of United States and Canada....

A complex field such as oceanography tends to be subject to two opposite appr0aches. The first is the descriptive, in which several quantities are measured simultaneously and their inter-relationships derived by some sort of statistical method. The other approach is the synthetic one, in which a few reasonable although perhaps oversimplified assumptions are laid down, these serving as a basis for mathematical derivation of relationships.

A Study Of Variability In Plankton Townet Catches Of Pacific Pilchard (Sardinops Caerulea) Eggs, Ralph P. Silliman

During the pilchard spawning season of 1940 the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, in collaboration with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, made periodic surveys of part of the pilchard spawning area in an attempt to make quantitative evaluations of egg deposition. In addition to estimating the number of eggs deposited in the entire survey area during the season, it was desired to make estimates of the number of eggs for parts of the area or season in connection with studies of survival, drift of larvae, etc .

Journal of Marine Research

Studies of diurnal vertical migration in the polar seas are of special interest since we arc able to make observations in nature (without the possible drawbacks of laboratory experiments) of the behavior of animals under the widely varying light conditions that prevail during different seasons. Thus, during the polar summer it is possible to investigate the diurnal migration under conditions of uninterrupted daylight, during the polar autumn and spring under changing conditions of alternating days and nights, and finally in winter under conditions of permanent darkness. Phytoplankton-Zooplankton Relationships On Georges Bank, Gordon A. Riley, Dean F. Bumpus

Comparisons of different oceanic regions often suggest that in the largest sense there is a direct relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton-that is, banks and coastal areas with large concentrations of phytoplankton are likely to be rich in zooplankton, while sparser crops of both occur in deep oceanic waters. On the other hand, surveys of particular areas often show an inverse relationship, with local swarms of zooplankton occurring in phytoplankton-poor waters, alternating with dense patches of phytoplankton containing few animals....
