Revision Of Neofibularia (Porifera, Demospongiae), A Genus Of Toxic Sponges From The West Indies And Australia, Willard D. Hartman

A revision of the sponge genus Neofibularia, known for its dermatitis-producing qualities, is presented on the basis of a restudy of holotypic specimens. Carter's species Fibularia massa is regarded as a synonym of N. nolitangere (Duch. &. Mich.), the only species known from western tropical Atlantic waters. A new subspecies of N. nolitangere, with oxeate megascleres, is described as well as a new species, N. mordens, from South Australia. The relationship of Neofibularia to Biemna is discussed.

A Reappraisal Of The North American Species Of The Siluro-Devonian Trilobite Genus Scotiella, J. H. Shergold

The type material of Scotiella Delo 1935 is redescribed and the generic diagnosis emended to include trilobites in which the anterior and median lateral glabellar furrows are both strongly and poorly defined. The genus now embraces the species Scotiella logani (Hall 1860), S. conservatrix (McLearn 1924) new combination, S. minor (M'Coy 1851), S. samsonowiczi Tomczykowa 1962b and S. opatowiensis Tomczykowa 1962b. Scotiella obsoleta Ulrich and Delo 1940 is reclassified as Kloucekia (Kloucekia) obsoleta new combination.

One of the important peculiarities of information is that it is expensive to produce but cheap to reproduce. How does a price system react to this phenomenon? One reaction will be to avoid the production of information altogether. Alternatively, firms may decide to keep their information to themselves. In other cases the price system breaks down into imperfect competition. All three of these laissez-faire reactions are inefficient and it may be argued that it is desirable to impose social controls like a patent system or government control on the market for information. A Fossil Colobus Skull From The Sudan (Primates, Cercopithecidae), Elwyn L. Simons

A fossil monkey skull recovered from the "Old Alluvium" of presumed Pleistocene age near Wad Medani in the Central Sudan is described. This find represents a variant of Colobus polykomos abyssinicus, a living species whose habitat is restricted to forest canopy. Since this skull is not abraded and is unlikely to have been water-transported more than a few kilometers to its site of burial, it provides evidence that continuous forest cover once reached northwest across the Sudan to the vicinity of Wad Medani.

New descriptions and figures are given for Pecten rigida Hall & Meek ( = Pecten halli Gabb), the type species of Syncyclonema Meek, and for the type species of genera to which Syncyclonema is often compared: Entolium Meek, Eburneopecten Conrad, Pectinella Verrill, Hyalopecten Verrill, Camptonectes Agassiz, Micronectes Ichikawa & Maeda, Pseudamussium Mörch, and "Pseudamussium" H. & A. Adams. Syncyclonema is shown to be a valid genus. A lectotype is designated for Syncyclonema halli, and on the basis of its chlamyiid shape, deep byssal notch, and hinge morphology Syncyclonema is placed in the family Pectinidae. Functional Morphology Of The Masticatory Apparatus Of Two Dicynodonts (Reptilia, Therapsida), A. W. Crompton, Nicholas Hotton Iii

The specialized masticatory apparatus of Permo-Triassic dicynodonts (herbivorous mammal-like reptiles) is described and its function analysed by comparison of an archaic dicynodont, the pristerodont Emydops, with the advanced dicynodont Lystrosaurus. A unique feature of the dicynodont masticatory apparatus was the fact that the jaw joint consisted of two convex articulating surfaces which permitted free anteroposterior movement. Food was broken up during retraction—protraction serving merely to move the jaw forward for another retractive stroke. True propalinal action did not occur. Food was comminuted by shearing; grinding or crushing was not an integral part of the masticatory cycle. In Emydops, cutting took …
