A two-layer model of circulation is developed in an open-ocean basin where a vertically homogeneous layer overlays a thermoclinic region. In the latter, the temperature changes in an exponential manner to a constant abyssal value. The motions are driven by an Ekman suction and cooling (or heating) of the ocean surface....

Deposit-feeding and suspension-feeding benthos in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, show marked spatial separation; suspension feeders are largely confined to sandy or firm mud bottoms while deposit feeders attain high densities on soft muddy substrata. The California Undercurrent is a subthermocline poleward flow of warm and salty lowoxygen water along the coasts of California and Baja California. The salinity maximum is centered on the isanosteric surface of thermosteric anomaly 150 cl/t, and the region influenced by this circulation is shown by the distribution of salinity on that surface (at depths of 250-300 m)....

A new high-frequency (3.5-kHz) sub-bottom profiling system is capable of relatively deep penetration into sedimentary deposits, with good resolution of thin reflecting layers. This system has been operated at cruising speeds up to 11 knots and gives up to 0.15 seconds of penetration....

More Bathymetric Evidence For Block Faulting On The Gorda Rise, Donald F. Heinrichs

A detailed bathymetric survey of the crest and axial valley of the Gorda Rise, between 41°10' to 41° 29'N and 127°15' to 127°36'W, has revealed several pronounced continuous benches. The most prominent benches are at depths of 2400 and 2800 m. The regional bathymetry is consistent with a block-faulting origin for the topography of the Gorda Rise.

Seasonal Primary Production In Antarctic Sea Ice At Mcmurdo Sound In 1967, J. S. Bunt, C. C. Lee

Between late June and early December 1967, observations were made at numerous stations in McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic. This paper, dealing primarily with Sts. A and H in the Hut Point region, provides some new physico-chemical data on the ice habitat as well as information on the development of microalgal populations in the sea ice, data on levels of chlorophyll a and particulate carbon, and results of periodic laboratory measurements of C14 fixation.

[From the Summary] Rabbits immunized to benzylpenicillin G were found to develop circulating anti-benzylpenicillin antibodies. After immunization, challenge of these animals with intravenous aqueous penicillin was ineffective in eliciting fever. However, intravenous challenge with a penicillin-rabbit serum protein conjugate led to typical hypersensitivity fevers which were roughly correlated in magnitude with titers of benzylpenicillin antibody. Febrile tolerance developed after one or two challenges with the conjugate. This form of hypersensitivity appeared to be transferable with plasma of immunized donors to normal rabbits. Finally, blood leukocytes of immunized rabbits incubated with penicillin-protected conjugate and hypersensitive serum released pyrogen in vitro while …

[From the Introduction] In chronic renal insufficiency one of the products of metabolism which accumulates in the body is the hydrogen ion. The phosphoric, sulfuric, and organic acids usually eliminated in the urine accumulate. The respiratory system can and does decrease the hydrogen ion content of the body by decreasing the amount of carbonic acid present. The accumulating hydrogen ions also react with various bases throughout the body. The net result of metabolic production, respiratory elimination, and body buffering is reflected in the blood as chronic, partially compensated, metabolic acidosis. Several oceanographers have concluded that Pacific deep water enters the North Pacific from the southern hemisphere and is warmed along its northerly path of flow. The deep water near the Aleutian Trench, however, is noticeably colder than the water lying between it and 30°N in the region east of 170°E.
