Description Of Immature Stages Of Philolithus Densicollis And Stenomorpha Puncticollis With Notes On Their Biology (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Tentyriinae), Kirby W. Brown

Postilla

Mature larvae of the tribe Asidini are characterized by an unsclerotized body, dorsally concave mandibles with preapical gibbosity and submarginal setose area, granulate cranium, swollen preepipleurum, and huge granulate forelegs with contiguous coxae surrounded by an enlarged sternellum. The pygidial terminus is rounded in Philolithus densicollis (Horn) and bifurcate in Stenomorpha puncticollis (LeConte). First-instar larvae lack granules on cranium and forelegs, have 2 setae on the labrum, possess egg bursters, and are very similar in both species. Eggs are large, averaging 2.5 mm in length in P. densicollis and 3.1 mm in S. puncticollis. Pupae are not known. The two …

The Systematics Of Some Jamaican Excavating Sponges (Porifera), Rosemary K. Pang Aug 1973

The Systematics Of Some Jamaican Excavating Sponges (Porifera), Rosemary K. Pang

Postilla

Thirteen species of coral-dwelling sponges are reported from the reefs of Discovery Bay on the north coast of Jamaica. Seven of these are new species: Cliona delitrix, C. peponaca, C. langae, C. laticavicola, C. aprica (family Clionidae); Alectona jamaicensis (family uncertain); and Siphonodictyon brevitubulatum (family Adociidae). Two other species, Cliona schmidti and C. janitrix, are new records for the West Indies. A shallow-water and a deep-water form of two new species are described. Transplant studies indicate that these forms, distinguished by differences in the dimensions of the spicules and papillae, the degree of papillary fusion and, to a slight degree, …

Production Theory And The Stock Market, Hayne E. Leland Jun 1973

Production Theory And The Stock Market, Hayne E. Leland

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Traditional economic models separate firms’ production decisions from equilibrium in stock markets. In this paper, we develop an integrated model of production in the presence of capital asset market equilibrium. Our theory indicates that, in a stochastic environment, production and financial variables are inextricably interrelated. Following the financial equilibrium models of Sharpe [13], Lintner [10], and Mossin [11], we assume that profits and therefore portfolio returns are random. But stockholders can alter their distributions of returns by altering firms’ production decisions as well as by altering their portfolios. The key to the analysis is a “unanimity theorem,” which shows that …

In order to survey the frequency and patterns of occurrence of normal and abnormal muscular and tendinous variations of the leg and foot of man, a series of dissect ions were initiated. The specimens used In these dissections were procured from the Anatomy Department of the Yale Universlty School of Medicine (23 cadavers), from the Pathology Department of the Yale-New Haven Hospital (8 cadavers and 7 amputation specimens), from the Pathology Department of the Waterbury Hospital, Waterbury, Connecticut (10 amputation specimens), from the Pathology Department at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (1 cadaver and 1 amputation specimen) and from …

[From the Introduction] In order to insure the health and well-being of both mother and infant during parturition, circumstances often compel the obstetric practitioner to seek some means of either accelerating or even inducing labor. Consequently, numerous methods and medicaments have been employed to this end over the course of medical history. Within the last century, obstetrical practice has developed the relatively safe and effective use of oxytocin, a hormone elaborated by the pituitary and released during parturition, which only lately has begun to reveal its natural function. Within the past decade, however, progress in experimental technique has allowed both …

Lymphocyte-Induced Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte Stimulation, Christine Kull (Walsh) Apr 1973

Lymphocyte-Induced Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte Stimulation, Christine Kull (Walsh)

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Summary] Reactions of cellular hypersensitivity often involve the participation of different cell types. The communication between lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes was investigated. Human sensitized lymphocytes exposed to old tuberculin were found to have a stimulatory effect of polymorphonuclear leukocytes as indicated by the latter's increased glucose-1-14c oxidation and lysozyme production. Similar results were obtained using lymphocytes non-specifically stimulated by phytohemagglutinin. Activation of lymphocytes required a latent period (24 hour) followed by rapid stimulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (2 ours). These results suggest that increased glucose-1-14c oxidation and lysozyme production may be related to enhanced microbicidal activity. A possible mechanism …
