Mechanistic And Structure-Function Analysis Of Thymidylate Synthase-Dihydrofolate Reductase From Protozoal Parasites: Implications For The Development Of Non-Active Site Inhibitors, Chloé E. Atreya
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
A major advance in the field of bifunctional thymidylate synthase-dihydrofolate reductase (TS-DHFR) is the recent crystallization of two apicomplexan TS-DHFR enzymes, from Cryptosporidium hominis and Plasmodium falciparum, which demonstrate significant structural differences from the well-known kinetoplastid TS-DHFR structure (Leishmania major ). A principal finding of this dissertation research is that the significant structural differences between the apicomplexa and kinetoplastid bifunctional TS-DHFR enzymes translate as significant mechanistic differences between parasite classes and among parasites within the same class. An in depth mechanistic analysis of C. hominis TS-DHFR and a preliminary analysis of the P. falciparum enzyme were completed. Results with C. hominis …

The Social Cost Of Monopoly Power, Donald J. Brown, G. A. Wood
The Social Cost Of Monopoly Power, Donald J. Brown, G. A. Wood
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A general equilibrium analysis of monopoly power is proposed as an alternative to the partial equilibrium analyses of monopolization common to most antitrust texts. This analysis introduces the notion of a cost minimizing market equilibrium. The empirical implications of this equilibrium concept for antitrust policy is derived in terms of a family of equilibrium inequalities over market data from observations on a market economy with competitive factor markets. The social cost of monopoly power is measured using Debreu’s coefficient of resource utilization. That is, we propose Pareto optimality as the ultimate objective of antitrust policy.

From The "Bland Leading The Bland" To The Mississippi Freedom Vote: William Sloane Coffin Jr. And The Civil Rights Movement At Yale University, 1958 - 1963, Wallis Finger
Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections
When Reverend William Sloane Coffin, Jr. arrived at Yale University in 1958, he found a campus he characterized as "the bland leading the bland." By the time sixty-seven Yale students went to Mississippi in 1963 to register voters during the freedom vote, Coffin had played a crucial role in creating a politically aware and directly involved student population. Coffin had infused the Yale campus with "energy." He did this gradually by preaching, introducing outside motivators and leading by example. Through his weekly Sunday sermons in Yale's Battell Chapel, the civil rights leaders he brought to campus and his participation in …

Tuba, A Novel Protein Containing Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs And Dbl Homology Domains, Links Dynamin To Regulation Of The Actin Cytoskeleton, Marco Antonio Del Valle Salazar
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Tuba is a novel scaffold protein that functions to bring together dynamin with components of the actin cytoskeleton. It is concentrated at synapses in brain and binds dynamin selectively through four N-terminal Src homology-3 (SH3) domains. Tuba binds a variety of actin regulatory proteins, including N-WASP, CR16, WAVE1, WIRE, PIR121, NAP1, and Ena/VASP proteins, via a C-terminal SH3 domain. Direct binding partners include N-WASP and Ena/VASP proteins. Forced targeting of the C-terminal SH3 domain to the mitochondrial surface can promote accumulation of F-actin around mitochondria. A Dbl homology domain present in the middle of Tuba upstream of a Bin/amphiphysin/Rvs (BAR) …

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In this paper we present a series of models, all within the context of a simple two-good economy, which bring out the distinctions between the different types of money and financial institutions. The models emphasize the physical properties of the economic goods, moneys, and trading systems. In Part 1 of the paper, we covered models in which the money is a consumable storable; here in Part 2 we consider economies using durable money, fiat money, or credit. Under this framework we are able to successfully contrast the role of private money lenders, banks, bilateral credit systems, and credit clearinghouses. We …

Neighborhood Complexes And Generating Functions, Herbert E. Scarf, Kevin M. Woods
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Given a 1 , a 2 ,…, a n in Z d , we examine the set, G , of all nonnegative integer combinations of these a i . In particular, we examine the generating function f ( z ) = Sum {b in G} z b . We prove that one can write this generating function as a rational function using the neighborhood complex (sometimes called the complex of maximal lattice-free bodies or the Scarf complex) on a particular lattice in Z n . In the generic case, this follows from algebraic results of D . Bayer and B. …
Household Reaction To Changes In Housing Wealth, Robert J. Shiller
Household Reaction To Changes In Housing Wealth, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
It is widely claimed that housing wealth, as well as stock prices, have an impact on consumption and hence on aggregate economic activity. This paper presents a broad overview of the issues that arise in evaluating this claim in the context of recent research in behavioral economics. Particular attention is paid to a model of the response of consumption to wealth components produced by Christopher Carroll [2004].
Radical Financial Innovation, Robert J. Shiller
Radical Financial Innovation, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Radical financial innovation is the development of new institutions and methods that permit risk management to be extended far beyond its former realm, covering important new classes of risks. This paper compares past such innovation with potential future innovation, looking at the process that produced past success and the possibilities for future financial innovation.
