Peer And Neighborhood Influences On Substance Use Among Emerging Adult Males: An Activity Spaces Approach, Crystal Gibson Jan 2014

Peer And Neighborhood Influences On Substance Use Among Emerging Adult Males: An Activity Spaces Approach, Crystal Gibson

Public Health Theses

Introduction

Alcohol and substance use are common among emerging adults and may result in negative outcomes such as unsafe sex and poor mental health. Males are more susceptible to problems with substances, and minority men may be at particular risk for developing problems with substance abuse. Peer influence and neighborhood level characteristics are two areas that are related to substance use behavior in this population. However, there is little work examining how social networks interact with other aspects of individuals' social contexts. Using an event-based approach utilizing routine locations individuals travel to (activity spaces) may help to elucidate these relationships. …

Modeling The Count Data Of Emergency Department Use Among The Chronically Homeless Adults, Yue Li

Public Health Theses

This study explored Emergency department (ED) use among the chronically homeless people based on the data from the federal Collaborative Initiative on Chronic Homelessness (CICH) program. The Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations (Gelberg L et al. 2000) was applied to identify and classify factors potentially associated with ED use.

Baseline ED use was modeled on 754 chronically homeless subjects, either later entered the CICH program (n=642) or received local usual care (n=112), in 11 communities. ED use was measured as the number of ED visits during 90 days prior to the interview. At baseline level, medical problems, mental health/substance use …

A needs assessment was developed and conducted in 13 regional referral hospitals, 27 general hospitals, and 14 health center IVs in Uganda to: (1) assess the capacity of health units to detect and manage noncommunicable diseases; (2) describe provider knowledge, attitudes, resources, and practices, and (3) identify areas of improvement and areas in …

The Relationship Between Cyberabuse In Teen Dating Relationships And Self-Efficacy In A Sample Of High School Girls, Pavita Singh Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Cyberabuse In Teen Dating Relationships And Self-Efficacy In A Sample Of High School Girls, Pavita Singh

Public Health Theses

Interpersonal violence is a prevalent public health issue. Cyberbullying and intimate partner violence (IPV) are two types of interpersonal violence that have major health and wellbeing consequences. The primary goal of this study is to understand the relationship between victimization and perpetration of cyberabuse in teen dating relationships and two types of self-efficacy: general self-efficacy and coping self-efficacy. Secondarily, this study aims to understand how cyberabuse in teen dating relationships is associated with depression, anxiety, and childhood trauma. Study participants were 51 high school girls. No significant relationships were found between perpetration and either type of self-efficacy. Trends towards significance …

The Role Of Gene Regulation In Cancer: Studies Of Cancer-Related Phenotypes Mediated By Mex3d And By Microrna-618 Implicate Their Potential Oncogenic Role, Travis Whitfill Jan 2014

The Role Of Gene Regulation In Cancer: Studies Of Cancer-Related Phenotypes Mediated By Mex3d And By Microrna-618 Implicate Their Potential Oncogenic Role, Travis Whitfill

Public Health Theses

The control of gene expression is pivotal in the context of molecular pathogenesis of a number of diseases, and thus is of critical relevance to public health. An array of cellular tools exist in controlling gene expression, including epigenetic effects, non-coding RNAs, and RNA-binding proteins. These tools are critical to the modern study of public health, and are used in tandem with population-based studies. This work focuses on specific examples of non-coding RNAs and RNA-binding proteins, describing the effects of microRNA-618, a non-coding RNA, and MEX3D, a post-transcriptional regulator, in cancer.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) form a class of highly conserved endogenous …

Association Between Life Event Stressors And Risk Of Low Birth Weight Among African American And White Mothers ------A Multilevel Analysis Of The Los Angeles Mommy And Baby (Lamb) Surveys, Yuan Zhao

Public Health Theses

We examined the association between life events stressors during pregnancy and low birth weight (LBW) among African Americans and Whites, while systematically controlling for potential confounders including individual characteristics and city-level variations and clustering. Data from 4970 women with singleton births from the 2007 and 2010 Los Angeles Mommy and Baby Surveys were analyzed. Multilevel logistic regression was used to assess the association between emotional, financial, spousal and traumatic stressors and LBW among African Americans and Whites. Potential confounders included were: city-level Economic Hardship Index, maternal demographics, pre-pregnancy conditions, insurance, behavioral risk factors and social support. African Americans were significantly …

The Impact Of Education On Obesity Among Blacks And Whites Living In New York City, Chelsea Andrea Doub Jan 2014

The Impact Of Education On Obesity Among Blacks And Whites Living In New York City, Chelsea Andrea Doub

Public Health Theses

This analysis examines the role of both race and ethnicity in obesity among residents of New York City. An increase in educational attainment is typically associated with lower Body Mass Index (BMI). The primary research question looks at whether the protective effect of education on obesity is equivalent among Blacks and Whites living in New York City. Predicted probabilities of the rate changes across educational gradients and race/ethnic groups were calculated using data from the 2012 Community Health Survey, a telephone survey conducted annually by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Logistic regression and predicted …

Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen Jan 2014

Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen

Public Health Theses

Every organism requires certain resources that they cannot endogenously produce; one such dietary component, iron, is essential for many basic cellular functions and the host-immune response. By studying patterns of genetic diversity within the genes involved in immune-related iron transport we can achieve a greater understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms which drive these processes, including those underlying host-pathogen interactions.

This thesis describes further evidence of patterns indicative of positive selection within apical regions of the transferrin receptor complex (Tfr1), sites known to be involved in an evolutionary arms race with pathogens, within two rodent species endemic to Europe and Asia, …

Variations In Semen Sample Parameters Among Men In A Fertility Clinic: Implications For Reproducibility In Epidemiologic Studies, Regina Esenam Edifor Jan 2014

Variations In Semen Sample Parameters Among Men In A Fertility Clinic: Implications For Reproducibility In Epidemiologic Studies, Regina Esenam Edifor

Public Health Theses

BACKGROUND: In population studies, one semen sample is usually collected per individual but in clinical settings it is recommended that multiple semen samples are collected per individual for analysis. The goal of this study is to estimate the size of within-person variability in semen quality parameters with the ultimate goal of figuring out how many repeat samples are needed in a semen quality study to represent this. We will also investigate how accurately one can predict semen parameter values for an individual using the long-term average as a standard.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that a maximum of 2 semen samples has …

Chemical Characteristics Of Indoor Pm2.5 In Urban China: An Exposure Assessment Study, Kevin Gandhi Jan 2014

Chemical Characteristics Of Indoor Pm2.5 In Urban China: An Exposure Assessment Study, Kevin Gandhi

Public Health Theses

Today, 690 million people, or double the population of the United States, live in urban areas of China accounting for over 50% of the country's population. Many studies have analyzed the outdoor levels of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 micrometers (PM 2.5) instead of indoors, where individuals spend the majority of their time. In this study, we investigated the levels of PM 2.5 and chemical composition of the PM in 15 households in Taiyuan, China. 24 hour measurements were captured on Teflon filters in China and then analyzed using X-ray fluorescence in the United States. Mass concentrations of the 32 filters from Taiyuan ranged from 38.6 µg/m3 to 127.7 µg/m3, with a mean of 65.1 µg/m3, over two times higher than the WHO standard. High levels of mercury, zinc, lead, manganese, copper, chromium and sulfur were found indoors of homes. Within a 24-hour sample period, 3 filters recorded lead levels higher than the EPA's 3 month rolling average of 150ng/m3 (nanograms per cubic meter), while all filters averaged a reading of 88 ng/m3. Our findings suggest that residents of Taiyuan, China are exposed to a large concentration of particulate matter and heavy metals inside their homes.

The Epidemiology Of Primary Varicella And Herpes Zoster Hospitalizations In The Post-Varicella Vaccine Era: Connecticut, 1996-2012, Elizabeth Humes

Public Health Theses

Background: A vaccine for primary varicella (VZV) was licensed and recommended for use in children as a single dose in 1996, and as two doses in 2006. A vaccine for herpes zoster (HZ) was licensed and recommended for use in adults ≥60 years in 2006. Both vaccines have the potential to modify the epidemiology of VZV and HZ. Rates of hospitalization due to VZV and HZ were examined in the post-vaccine era to characterize the epidemiology of severe disease and to assess the possible impact of vaccination on the incidence of hospitalization.

Methods: Statewide hospital discharge data in Connecticut were …
