Identification Of Fetal Genomic Copy Number Deletions Associated With Preeclamptic Mothers In The Caucasian Population, Tze-An Yuan
Public Health Theses
Genetic determinants that are associated with preeclampsia still remain elusive
nowadays, which might have resulted from limited understanding of the underlying
pathogenesis mechanisms and the fetal contributions. By using genome-wide association study approach, we identified 2 candidate copy number deletions of the highest odds ratio ranking on chromosome 1 and 19, from 283 US white babies born by the mothers with preeclampsia. Based on the molecular and biological functions of the genes entailed the deleted regions, which contain CTSK, ARNT, and ACTN4, we proposed that these two candidate genomic deletions might be associated with preeclampsia. In a further attempt to …
The Association Of Smoking And Body Mass Index With Quality Of Life Among Breast Cancer Survivors, Hua Zeng
The Association Of Smoking And Body Mass Index With Quality Of Life Among Breast Cancer Survivors, Hua Zeng
Public Health Theses
Objective: The associations of smoking and body mass index (BMI) with health-related quality of life (QoL) are not well understood among breast cancer survivors. We examined the QoL of breast cancer patients by smoking status and BMI (1) to determine if there are differences in physical and mental component summary (PCS and MCS) scores, (2) to evaluate whether there is an interaction between smoking and BMI on QoL, (3) to assess smoking pattern changes pre- and post-cancer diagnosis, and (4) to measure changes of physical and mental health by smoking status.
Methods: In this study, we included 6,756 breast cancer …

Evaluation Of An Integrated Non-Communicable Diseases Training Program For Ugandan Healthcare Workers, Sarah Danielle Ali
Public Health Theses
The Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH) is undertaking non-communicable diseases (NCD) training activities for healthcare workers (HCW) as part of its capacity building agenda for addressing NCDs. The MOH is using an integrated, team-based approach to NCD care to routinely screen for and manage NCDs, provide health education, and create an appropriate referral system. This study aimed to evaluate knowledge acquisition resulting from this training. The MOH NCD training curriculum incorporates a participatory and self-directed delivery mechanism. The evaluation was conducted using a pre- and post-, 63-point open-ended and multiple choice test, designed to align with course materials. Paired t-tests …

Using A Transmission Dynamic Model Of Rotavirus Infection To Determine The Cost-Effectiveness Of Rotavirus Vaccination In Bangladesh, Maria Paulina Echandi Roman
Public Health Theses
INTRODUCTION: Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe gastroenteritis worldwide. Due to the morbidity and mortality of the disease, introduction of rotavirus vaccination in routine childhood immunization programs is recommended for all nations by the World Health Organization.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of rotavirus vaccine introduction in Bangladesh from 2015 to 2024.
METHODS: We used a compartmental SIRS-like model developed by Pitzer et al (2009) to simulate health outcomes due to rotavirus infection in Bangladesh under two scenarios: 92% vaccination coverage and no vaccination (Pitzer et al., 2009). The model was first …

Dancing By Numbers: Dance's Expanding Presence In Library Classifications Of The Progressive Era, Dominique Bourassa
Dancing By Numbers: Dance's Expanding Presence In Library Classifications Of The Progressive Era, Dominique Bourassa
Library Staff Publications
Library classifications are artificial systems that use numbers, letters, and symbols to map knowledge as the basis for organizing the contents of libraries. Inevitably influenced by social forces and cultural values, the Dewey Decimal, Cutter Expansive, and Library of Congress classification systems offer a unique perspective to study the status and identity of dance between 1876 and 1930. From the standpoint of library taxonomies, dance evolves during this period from an indoor amusement with moral implications to a recognized art form and discipline.
Prenatal Medication Use And Autistic Behaviors In A South Korean Cohort, John Keaney
Prenatal Medication Use And Autistic Behaviors In A South Korean Cohort, John Keaney
Public Health Theses
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is thought to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, yet a specific cause remains unknown. In this study, exposure and outcome data from a South Korean cohort (N=3,711) were analyzed to investigate the possibility of an environmental contribution to autism etiology. No significant association was observed between use of prenatal medications and autistic behaviors, as measured by Korean versions of both the Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ; OR 1.20, 95% CI 0.95–1.51) and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS; OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.78–1.25). Similarly, no significant associations were observed when use of prenatal …

Unwanted Sexual Experiences Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Queer Undergraduates: The Role Of Internalized Homophobia And Sense Of Community, Gabriel R. Murchison
Public Health Theses
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer college students experience sexual assault and coercion at similar or higher rates compared to heterosexual peers, but there are little data on how LGBQ identity affects the nature or risk of these events. This study examined characteristics and correlates of unwanted sexual experiences (USEs) in a sample of 683 LGBQ undergraduates, testing whether internalized homophobia and sense of LGBTQ community predicted USEs. 39% of the sample reported some form of unwanted sexual contact during college, and 14% reported an unwanted sex act, with the lowest risk among men. 79% of participants with USEs reported male …
Characterization Of Anopheline Species Composition Along The Bhutan-India Border Region, Wan Nurul Naszeerah
Characterization Of Anopheline Species Composition Along The Bhutan-India Border Region, Wan Nurul Naszeerah
Public Health Theses
Bhutan is aggressively embarking on a path towards malaria elimination. Despite substantial progress, Bhutan remains vulnerable to imported malaria. The majority of cases are in Sarpang district, which shares a border with the state of Assam in India. However, the anopheline species responsible for autochthonous malaria transmission have not been well characterized. Therefore, a comparison of the Anopheles species in Sarpang was made with published records of anopheline mosquitoes in neighboring Assam. An assessment of Anopheles species composition was undertaken from June to July 2014 in four Sarpang villages adjacent to the Sarpang-Assam border. Five sampling methods were employed: (1) …
Spatial Distribution And Sociodemographic Composition Of High Grade Cervical Lesion Clusters In Connecticut 2008-2013, Aref Senno
Public Health Theses
Introduction: HPV is necessary for the development of invasive cervical cancer. There were 530,000 cases and 275,000 deaths attributable to cervical cancer in 2008. Since the introduction of HPV vaccines in 2006, the incidence of high grade cervical lesions (HGCL)—precancerous lesions which may develop into cervical cancer—has decreased significantly. Some changing sociodemographic trends in disease burden have been previously reported since 2008.
Objectives: The objectives of this analysis were to identify regions of Connecticut with high rates of HGCLs and to describe how trends of disease changed over time in the post-vaccine era.
Methods: This is a descriptive analysis of …

Influenza And Asthma Hospitalizations In Nyc From 2002-2012, Pauline Trinh
Public Health Theses
INTRODUCTION: The literature has focused primarily on rhinoviruses as the major determinant of asthma exacerbations. The association between other respiratory viruses such as influenza and asthma exacerbations is not well characterized and further understanding can better inform prevention strategies to reduce influenza-related asthma.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study is to determine whether asthma hospitalizations of children and adults in the five boroughs of New York City is correlated with influenza hospitalizations temporally and spatially and whether these correlations differ by county or age.
METHODS: A times series regression analysis was performed using influenza hospitalizations as the explanatory series …
Driving Fatalities On Us Presidential Election Days: A Reanalysis, Fan Zhang
Driving Fatalities On Us Presidential Election Days: A Reanalysis, Fan Zhang
Public Health Theses
Background: Redelmeier and Tibshirani conducted a study, indicating polling hours of presidential election days created an increased risk of driving fatalities [10]. In another paper, they suggested a negative association between the 4 hours after polling and risk of driving fatalities [11]. Such a strong negative relationship cast doubt on the methodology used in the original paper [10]. We were concerned that the approach for hypothesis testing was underconservative, and that the confidence intervals presented lacked proper coverage.
Methods: We performed analysis on time-based relative risk of driving fatalities and fatal crashes for US population on election hours, non-election hours, …
The Impact Of Hurricane Sandy On Healthcare Workers In Nyc, Grace Barlet
The Impact Of Hurricane Sandy On Healthcare Workers In Nyc, Grace Barlet
Public Health Theses
There is a gap in the literature regarding whether training in emergency preparedness and response makes a difference in the overall health outcomes of healthcare workers who are responding to and working during a natural disaster. The objective of this study was to investigate whether emergency preparedness training lowers the risk of poor health outcomes as reported by healthcare workers in New York City responding to Hurricane Sandy. A survey created by 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East was conducted between July and August 2014 to capture the health and safety experience of workers during and after Hurricane Sandy. The …

Strain Drain: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Impact Of Mortgage Strain Recovery Strategies On Health Outcome And Behaviors, Anastasia Beletsky
Public Health Theses
When individuals enter into mortgage delinquency or foreclosure, the benefits of home become threatened. How individuals respond to economic stress, and the strategies they use to recover, provides insight into personal spending priorities, the importance of healthcare for such individuals, and resulting health outcomes and behaviors. This paper aims to explore how foreclosure and mortgage strain act as distal or upstream determinants of health for a small sample of individuals from an urban African-American community. It presents a qualitative analysis of how individuals’ experiences with, attitudes concerning and circumstances surrounding mortgage delinquency, and their recovery from it, impact health. It …

Drought As A Climatic Driver Of An Outbreak Of Diarrhea In Tuvalu, South Pacific, Jordan Emont
Public Health Theses
Introduction: Increased rainfall and temperature are well-recognized climatic factors associated with increased rates of diarrhea, yet there is limited information on the role of droughts as the cause of diarrheal outbreaks. In 2011, Funafuti, an island in the Pacific country of Tuvalu, experienced a concurrent severe drought and outbreak of diarrhea. We performed an investigation to identify factors that contributed to epidemic transmission and evaluate the role of interventions in controlling the outbreak.
Methods: We identified cases by performing a review of medical registers in Funafuti (pop. 6,216 inhabitants) during the outbreak period from 29 August 2011 – 16 October …
