Wave Directions From A Large Spar Buoy, Philip Rudnick

A set of 50 directional spectra of surface waves in the North Pacific Ocean, covering a 26-day period in September 1963, has been derived from pressure and acceleration sensors attached to the manned spar buoy, FLIP, located near 39° 20'N, 148° 30'W. Results are given as ampiitudes and directions associated with the first two harmonics of the directional distribution. New analyses enabling full interpretation of these parameters are also presented.

Ectosteorhachis nitidus from the Lower Permian of North America has holospondylous vertebrae, but a new North American genus of osteolepid rhipidistian of the same age has compound vertebrae each comprising a large principal and a small anterior median dorsal accessory centrum. Attempted embryological analysis of vertebral structure in Rhipidistia reveals no evidence of sclerotome resegmentation and no direct homology with tetrapod vertebrae.

Morphology And Systematics Of The Northern Dvina Cynodonts (Reptilia, Therapsida; Upper Permian), L. P. Tatarinov

The materials on the North Dvina cynodonts, Dvinia prima and "Permocynodon sushkini", are redescribed. These cynodonts have a complete secondary palate, an interpterygoid vacuity of the therocephalian type, a medioventral contact between the basipterygoid processes, and an additional mandibular articulation between the surangular and quadratojugal. In addition, I have found an impression of the external auditory meatus, which has a structure of the tritylodont type but runs to the region of the external quadrate condyle and is closely connected with the grooves for the veins in the occipital part of the skull. The Relationships Of The “Wren-Thrush”, Zeledonia Coronata Ridgway, Charles G. Sibley

Comparisons of the electrophoretic pattern of the egg-white proteins of Zeledonia coronata with the patterns of most groups of passerine birds indicate that this species is not a thrush, but a "nine-primaried oscine", probably allied most closely to, and possibly a member of, the wood warblers (Parulidae of Wetmore, 1960). Investigation of the taxonomic history of Zeledonia suggests that an early combination of bias, errors, and incomplete comparative studies conspired to divert the attention of later investigators from the ample anatomical evidence indicating the true relationships of Zeledonia.

A New Devonian Fish (Crossopterygii: Rhipidistia) Considered In Relation Of The Origin Of The Amphibia, Keith Stewart Thomson

Hyneria lindae, gen. et sp. nov., is a large rhizodontid rhipidistian fish from the Upper Devonian (Oswayo Formation) of Pennsylvania. It shows a remarkable similarity to the intermediate stages that must have preceded the first true Amphibia. The similarity is due to the parallel evolution of rhizodontid Rhipidistia and the Amphibia from a common stock in the Middle or early Late Devonian.

A Mandible Of Indraloris (Primates, Lorisidae) From The Miocene Of India, Ian Tattersall

A partial mandible of a large lorisid primate is described. The specimen (YPM 19134) comes from probable late Miocene deposits in northeastern India and consists of a fragment of a left mandibular ramus containing M3, the roots of M2 and the posterior root of M1. The third molar resembles the M3 of modern Nycticebus coucang borneanus; the specimen is referred to Indraloris cf. lulli. Unfotunately, because of its specialized nature, YPM 19134 affords no clue as to lorisid ancestry.

Lung ventilation in Dipnoi and probably all other primitive fishes is effected by muscular action of the buccopharyngeal region (inhalation) and the muscular and elastic lung wall (exhalation). Differential hydrostatic pressure plays no major part in ventilation. Lung volume is under precise control.

A New Dinocephalian From The Cisuralian Region (Reptilia, Therapsida; Upper Permian), P. K. Tchudinov

A new genus and species of dinocephalian is described, based on a skull, teeth, and lower jaw fragment from the Upper Permian of south Cisuralian U.S.S.R. The new dinocephalian belongs to a group of carnivorous brithopodids which are widespread in the Cisuralian region. On the basis of morphological characteristics it is concluded that the new genus is closely related to Syodon and Titanophoneus, representatives of one of the late stages of development of the dinocephalian faunas of the U.S.S.R.

Chiefly from lack of illustration, the majority of these have been misunderstood in the literature. The development of the aortic isthmus, that region of the arch of the aorta between the left subclavian artery and the attachment of the ligamentum arteriosum, has received little attention. While the developmental history of the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale has been well documented, as have the cardiac malformations associated with failure to complete this developmental sequence, little work has been done to define the normal sequence of isthmus development in its transition to an adult configuration in the postnatal period. A New Sibling Papilio From The Rocky Mountains, With Genetic And Biological Notes (Insecta, Lepidoptera), Charles L. Remington

Papilio gothica (Papilionidae) is described as a new species from montane regions of Colorado and adjacent states. It is a sibling of the lowland Californian P. zelicaon and is characterized by subtle color and pattern differences, univoltinism, Pseudocymopterus montanus (Umbelliferae) as larval food, and probably distinctive flight behavior. The chromosome number is n = 30. Phenotypically P. gothica and P. zelicaon are nearly alike, but their F1 hybrids with P. polyxenes are unlike. They have different hybrid sex ratios in their crosses with P. polyxenes, gothica × polyxenes being nearly lethal for the sex of the polyxenes parent whereas zelicaon …

The anatomical characters of the passerine family Conopophagidae have been reexamined. The sternum, syrinx, tarsus, antorbital osteology and pterylosis of Conopophaga and Corythopis were compared with a broad sample of other suboscines, with particular attention to the Formicariidae and Rhinocryptidae. Conopophaga was found to lie well within the range of variation of the Formicariidae in the principal characters (sternum and syrinx) used by Forbes in describing the Conopophagidae. The key character was the apparent presence in Conopophaga of a four-notched sternum. In nearly all specimens of Conopophaga, however, we found the sternum to have two notches and two large medial …
