Leposoma Percarinatum, A Unisexual Species Related To L. Guianense; And Leposoma Ioanna, A New Species From Pacific Coastal Colombia (Sauria, Teiidae), Thomas Uzzell, John C. Barry Dec 1971

Leposoma Percarinatum, A Unisexual Species Related To L. Guianense; And Leposoma Ioanna, A New Species From Pacific Coastal Colombia (Sauria, Teiidae), Thomas Uzzell, John C. Barry

Postilla

Two distinct populations of Leposoma occur in the Guianan highlands area of northern South America. Leposoma percarinatum Miiller is distinguished from L. guianense Ruibal by a higher number of transverse rows of dorsal scales (36-39, mean 37.5 in L. percarinatum; 31-35, mean 32.6 in L. guianense) as well as by more transverse rows of ventral scales and more scales around the midbody region. In L. percarinatum, the third and especially the fourth pairs of chin shields are much reduced compared to the conditions in L. guianense; the scale behind the longest supralabial is as small as the temporal scales, rather …

On The Systematic Position Of Macelognathus Vagans, John H. Ostrom Aug 1971

On The Systematic Position Of Macelognathus Vagans, John H. Ostrom

Postilla

The holotype and only known specimen of Macelognathus vagans was placed in a separate reptilian order (Macelognatha) by O. C. Marsh in 1884. Restudy of the specimen and of other extensive collections from the Macelognathus site (Quarry Nine, Como Bluff, Wyoming) and a careful check of Peabody Museum records suggest that Macelognathus probably belongs to the Order Crocodilia.

Functional Significance Of Mandibular Translation In Vertebrate Jaw Mechanics, Philip D. Gingerich Jul 1971

Functional Significance Of Mandibular Translation In Vertebrate Jaw Mechanics, Philip D. Gingerich

Postilla

Fore-aft translatory freedom of jaw articulation and alignment of muscle fibers with the bite point make the chief adductor muscles of most reptile and mammal jaws mechanically very efficient. The force generated by the adductor muscles acts directly against the food at the bite point with no reaction force wasted at the jaw joint. The jaw is functionally a link and not a lever. Translatory freedom of the jaw joint is provided either by a sliding jaw joint (in most mammals, birds and some reptiles) or by a two-jointed jaw suspension (in most lizards and snakes).

The Form And Functions Of The Avicularia Of Bugula (Phylum Ectoprocta), Karl W. Kaufmann Jul 1971

The Form And Functions Of The Avicularia Of Bugula (Phylum Ectoprocta), Karl W. Kaufmann

Postilla

The most important function of the bird's head avicularium of Bugula simplex and B. stolonifera is that of reducing the tube-building activities of amphipods. These avicularia would probably also be effective in reducing predation by animals of such a size and shape that could be readily seized. That the avicularium is well adapted to such functions is indicated by: 1) the structurally sound design that maximizes the force that can be applied for the least amount of material; 2) the arrangement of the musculature that increases the ability to grasp objects of small diameter; 3) the reaction to mechanical stimuli, …

A New Triassic Cycad And Its Phyletic Implications, T. Delevoryas, R. C. Hope Jan 1971

A New Triassic Cycad And Its Phyletic Implications, T. Delevoryas, R. C. Hope

Postilla

Upper Triassic beds in North Carolina yield excellently preserved compressions of ferns, cycadophytes and conifers. Among the cycadophyte remains are leaves comparable to those of the genus Pseudoctenis attached to a slender, elongated stem fragment. Other stem remains show bases of petioles with a similar arrangement. Cuticular analysis of laminae, rachises and stem surfaces suggests the existence of a member of the Cycadales with loosely arranged pinnately compound fronds on a slender stem, with cataphylls and terminal cones. Although Cycadales probably originated before the Triassic, the growth habit of only a very small number of Triassic members is known. This …

Plutonium-239 In And Over The Atlantic Ocean, V. T. Bowen, K. M. Wong, V. E. Noshkin Jan 1971

Plutonium-239 In And Over The Atlantic Ocean, V. T. Bowen, K. M. Wong, V. E. Noshkin

Journal of Marine Research

Plutonium-239 has been found in over-ocean aerosols in about the same ratio to Strontium-90 as that reported over land. In seawater, Pu-239:Sr-90 ratios are shown to be less than half of those in over-ocean aerosols, confirming geochemical separation of these nuclides in the ocean. It is suggested that the sedimentation of Pu-239 may be more involved with biological processes than has been found for Ce-144 or Pm-147.

Seiche Motions For A Basin Of Rectangular Plan And Of Nonuniform Depth, D. J. Clarke Jan 1971

Seiche Motions For A Basin Of Rectangular Plan And Of Nonuniform Depth, D. J. Clarke

Journal of Marine Research

The two-dimensional modes of oscillation of a fluid in a rectangular basin are found from the linearized equations of motion in terms of transport variables by employing an extension of Galerkin's method. The depth function is arbitrary in so far as the vertical accelerations remain negligible and is herein chosen as a first-degree function of the space variables to illustrate the technique....

Some Exact Solutions To The Equations Describing An Ideal-Fluid Thermocline, Pierre Welander

Journal of Marine Research

The equations that describe a steady ideal-fluid motion have a first integral that expresses a functional relationship between the potential vorticity P, the density ϱ, and the Bernoulli function B: P = F(ϱ,B).

Observations On Short-Period Internal Waves In Massachusetts Bay, David Halpern Jan 1971

Observations On Short-Period Internal Waves In Massachusetts Bay, David Halpern

Journal of Marine Research

Temperature measurements made 9 km west of a prominent sill in Massachusetts Bay indicate that the seasonal thermocline heaves up and down in phase with periods of 6 to 8 minutes for about 2.5 hours during flood tide. A sudden rise in the general temperature level accompanies the onset of the short-period motion....

Spatial Structure Of Inertial-Period Motions In A Two-Layered Sea, Based On Observations, Friedrich Schott Jan 1971

Spatial Structure Of Inertial-Period Motions In A Two-Layered Sea, Based On Observations, Friedrich Schott

Journal of Marine Research

Spatial coherence and phase relationships of inertial-period motions have been inferred from an experiment with four moorings in the northern North Sea where the density profile was almost two-layered. The inertial-period currents showed antiphase between the upper and lower layers; the coherence between both layers was high. The inertial-period temperature fluctuations were in phase throughout the thermocline.

On The Wind-Driven Circulation Of A Stratified Ocean, J. A. Johnson Jan 1971

On The Wind-Driven Circulation Of A Stratified Ocean, J. A. Johnson

Journal of Marine Research

A theoretical study is made of the response of a stratified ocean to an applied wind stress. The ocean has been divided into an Ekman layer, a thermal layer, and an almost isothermal abyssal layer. The velocity and temperature fields were found by matching with the Ekman layer suction produced by the wind stress and by an upwelling condition at the eastern boundary. The surface temperature was determined principally by advection of heat with the oceanic circulation.

Panama Basin Deep Water----Properties And Circulation, Norman P. Laird Jan 1971

Panama Basin Deep Water----Properties And Circulation, Norman P. Laird

Journal of Marine Research

Temperature, salinity, and dissolved-oxygen data from the deep waters of the Panama Basin suggest that water enters the Basin through a single pass near Ecuador and subsequently spreads to the north and west. The flow is blocked in places by subsills, and warming occurs through mixing and geothermal heating. The bottom water appears to have a residence time of about 175 years, and heat flow is believed to be important in the renewal process in the bottom water.

The Measurement Of Respiratory Electron-Transport Activity In Marine Phytoplankton, T. T. Packard

Journal of Marine Research

A tetrazolium-reduction method for the measurement of the respiratory electron-transport activity in plankton is described . The method is sensitive to 0.03 µg cell nitrogen and can be used to estimate total plankton respiration.

On The Circulation Of The Intermediate Water In The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, José L. Buscaglia Jan 1971

On The Circulation Of The Intermediate Water In The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, José L. Buscaglia

Journal of Marine Research

In early studies of the Antarctic Intermediate Water in the South Atlantic it was assumed that the flow was mostly thermohaline and meridional. However, there is evidence that the wind-driven subtropical anticyclonic circulation in the South Atlantic Ocean extends to and includes the Intermediate Water, as in other oceans.

The East Australian Current As A Free Inertial Jet, J. S. Godfrey, A. R. Robinson Jan 1971

The East Australian Current As A Free Inertial Jet, J. S. Godfrey, A. R. Robinson

Journal of Marine Research

Paths of the East Australian Current are calculated, employing the assumption that changes in the total cross-stream vorticity due to path curvature are balanced by changes in the planetary vorticity and vortex stretching. With reasonable assumptions for the velocity structure, the resulting paths follow the continental slope for the whole known length of the current and then gradually move into deeper water....

The Electromagnetic Field Of Long And Intermediate Water Waves, J. C. Larsen Jan 1971

The Electromagnetic Field Of Long And Intermediate Water Waves, J. C. Larsen

Journal of Marine Research

The electromagnetic field induced by long and intermediate water waves (e.g., tsunami) is dependent on the time variation and spatial variation of the water motion and on the earth's electrical conductivity structure. The water motion is approximated by a plane progressive wave on a nonrotating flat infinite ocean of uniform depth....

Variations In Subcuticular Acid Phosphatase Activity During The Molting Cycle Of The Euphausiid Crustacean, Thysanoessa Raschii (M. Sars) Hansen, J. B. Jennings, Linda G. Halverson Jan 1971

Variations In Subcuticular Acid Phosphatase Activity During The Molting Cycle Of The Euphausiid Crustacean, Thysanoessa Raschii (M. Sars) Hansen, J. B. Jennings, Linda G. Halverson

Journal of Marine Research

A histochemical technique, applicable to intact euphausiids, has been used in the laboratory to demonstrate variations in the level of subcuticular acid phosphatase activity during the molting cycle of Thysanoessa raschii; it shows that there is a marked increase in such activity during the 24 hours in which ecdysis occurs. We suggest that the technique could form a useful tool in future studies on euphausiid biology since it would allow, for example, assessments of the numbers of individuals in any one collection or population that is passing through this particular 24-hour period at the time of sampling.

A Biaxial Propeller Current-Meter System For Fixed-Mount Applications, Glenn A. Cannon, Donald W. Pritchard Jan 1971

A Biaxial Propeller Current-Meter System For Fixed-Mount Applications, Glenn A. Cannon, Donald W. Pritchard

Journal of Marine Research

A biaxial propeller current-meter system for use in shallow water, where instrumentation can be attached to rigid bottom-mounted towers, has been developed at the Chesapeake Bay Institute. The use of two like sensors to measure the horizontal-velocity vector eliminates the problem of matching time constants in rotor-vane systems. The propellers have a noncosine response to the angle of attack of the flow. However, the data recorded by two propellers mounted at right angles are sufficient to correct for the noncosine response.
