A dispersion relationship for divergent continental shelf waves on a shelf of exponential profile has been obtained. The dispersion curves calculated from this relationship are in good agreement with experimental results reported by Caldwell et al. (1972). In addition, a perturbation method has been used to obtain the first-order divergent correction to the dispersion curves of nondivergent shelf waves on a shelf of arbitrary profile....

Dentition Of The Early Eocene Primates Niptomomys And Absarokius, Thomas M. Bown, Philip D. Gingerich

The mandibular dentition of Niptomomys doreenae was previously known only from an edentulous mandible preserving alveolae for all teeth, and jaw fragments preserving P4 and M1-3. A new mandible of Niptomomys is described here which preserves an enlarged, lanceolate lower incisor and a small, blunt, single-rooted P3. The incisor morphology confirms placement of Niptomomys in the Family Microsyopidae. The presence of a single-rooted P3 invalidates the previous interpretation of the lower dental formula. Comparison with the related early primates Navajovius, Palaechthon, Plesiolestes and Uintasorex shows the lower dental formula of Niptomomys to be 1.1.3.3. The total number of teeth in …

A specimen of Sterropterygion brandei, gen. et sp. nov., a rhipidistian from the Upper Devonian of Pennsylvania, shows for the first time the detailed internal structure of the pectoral and pelvic fins and girdles in a member of the Family Osteolepidae. The structure conforms to the general pattern once thought to be directly antecedent to that of tetrapods but which now must also be considered an ancient feature of rhipidistian fishes. A New Tillodont From The Eocene Upper Willwood Formation Of Wyoming, Kenneth D. Rose

A left mandible of a new tillodont from the Upper Willwood, Early Eocene of Buffalo Basin, Wyoming, is described. It represents a new genus and species, Megalesthonyx hopsoni. Included as parts of the type specimen are an upper incisor and several bones of the forefeet. Also referred to this species are a lower premolar, an upper premolar and two upper molars. The new specimen is intermediate between Esthonyx and Trogosus in time and in many morphologic characters. Sufficient evidence is lacking to prove that Megalesthonyx was ancestral to Trogosus, but most features now known suggest that it was. The transitional …

A numerical scheme for predicting tides and tidal currents has been designed for rapid application to new situations with a minimum of effort. The model is two-dimensional and includes Coriolis and fric tional terms. The radiation stresses in short-crested waves are expressed in terms of the two-dimensional energy spectrum of the wave elevation. It is shown that, for wind-driven waves, the short-crestedness has a considerable influence on the ratios of the radiation stresses to the average energy content of the waves per unit area.

Vertical profiles about the southeastern approaches to the Caribbean in early 1970 have shown a consistent Sr-90 inversion, with the maximum concentrations at depths of about room. It appears that four water masses may be involved, in this area, in a very complicated mixing and overlayering phenomenon.

The surface elevation is calculated for the three-dimensional motion of waves in a fluid of constant depth subject to a given bottom velocity. An example, modeling tsunami generation, with antisymmetric bottom velocity, is considered in detail. The amplitude of the wave front is found to decay much more rapidly than the main wave. The distribution of amplitude with wave number and with angular position is computed for some cases.

Data from two cruises in the southeastern Pacific Ocean show a pronounced double minimum in the oxygen profiles. The patterns indicate that at these sections (110° to 130°W) there is an eastward flow at about 14°S, at depths greater than 500 m.
