Substance Use Disorders (SUD) are a topic of increasing concern in the United States of American and continue to impact families and communities throughout. Methamphetamine accounts for approximately 1.6 million individuals. It is important for anesthesia providers to be aware of the potentially lethal effects if patients undergoing anesthesia are using methamphetamine. The consequences of which may include hypertensive crisis, cardiovascular collapse from hypotension, and death. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement an educational offering based on the most up-to-date literature so that anesthesia professionals may adhere to current practice which may abate the potential morbidity …

Utilizing Qualitative Methods To Inform Interventions For Addressing Alcohol Use During Pregnancy, Chaarushi Ahuja Jan 2021

Utilizing Qualitative Methods To Inform Interventions For Addressing Alcohol Use During Pregnancy, Chaarushi Ahuja

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: In the United States, nearly 12% of women report alcohol use during pregnancy despite recommendations of complete abstinence by government agencies and professional medical organizations. Multiple public health and screening interventions are effective in promoting increased knowledge and abstinence amongst pregnant women. However, the interventions generally provide broad, non-specific content, and the messaging is not directly tailored to the specific motivations and barriers that women face when making decisions about alcohol use during pregnancy. Since tailoring content and messages can improve effectiveness of interventions, a deeper qualitative investigation into the context surrounding alcohol use during pregnancy is warranted. Methods: …

Treating Invisible Wounds: Improving The Cultural Competency Of Non-Va Providers Treating Rural Veterans Through Telepsychiatry, Tyquitta Perrier Jan 2021

Treating Invisible Wounds: Improving The Cultural Competency Of Non-Va Providers Treating Rural Veterans Through Telepsychiatry, Tyquitta Perrier

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Addressing the mental health needs of veterans is a national priority, especially with respect to rural veterans. There is a compendium of literature that exists in regard to medical providers becoming culturally competent in treating veteran populations. Similarly, much literature also exists on the use of telemedicine, or more specifically, telepsychiatry in healthcare. However, there is a dearth of literature that examines the relationship between providers practicing telepsychiatry and their competency to treat veteran populations, specifically veterans in rural settings. Rural veterans are especially vulnerable to mental health difficulties due to the unique disadvantages they experience in comparison to their …

The Future Of Leadership Training: An Immersive Web-Based Program Enhancing Nurse’S Critical Soft Leadership Skills In New Healthcare Contexts, Nina Vaid Raoji Jan 2021

The Future Of Leadership Training: An Immersive Web-Based Program Enhancing Nurse’S Critical Soft Leadership Skills In New Healthcare Contexts, Nina Vaid Raoji

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

As the care of health shifts to a more decentralized model of care, it essential that the role of nursing facilitates new paths to meeting patients and communities where they are in the context of their lives, forging new partnerships outside of the traditional health care setting, and focusing on advocating for collective upstream solutions (Pittman, 2020). However, this shift requires a set of skills that are not a focus of current nurse leadership training. These are Soft Leadership Skills: networking, communication, teamwork, and innovation/creativity, but not in the traditional sense of the terms (Rao, 2017). The goal of this …

Establishing A Peer Supported Second Victim Program For Healthcare Providers: Team Heal, Renee N. Rathbun Jan 2021

Establishing A Peer Supported Second Victim Program For Healthcare Providers: Team Heal, Renee N. Rathbun

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Medical errors and adverse events in healthcare resulting in serious patient harm have a substantial impact on patients, families, healthcare providers, and healthcare organizations (Coughlan, Powell and Higgins 2017, Dukhanin et al., 2018). When adverse events occur, the patient and often family members are the “first victims.” However, less attention is given to the healthcare providers known as the “second victims.” Involvement in adverse events leading to patient injury can leave healthcare providers traumatized with emotional distress. Healthcare professionals frequently suffer in silence, experiencing feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, depression, guilt, isolation, and shame (Edrees et al., 2016a). Although the …

Seafaring And Impact On Seafaring Families In The Philippines: A Qualitative Study, Queenie Abad

Public Health Theses

Objective/Purpose: The Philippines is the largest occupational source of seafarers for the international shipping industry. Inherent to this occupation are the recurrent and long duration deployments overseas away from the seafarers’ families and communities which may negatively impact family wellness. In this qualitative study, we explored challenges that Filipino seafaring families face and identified protective factors for family and community well-being.Methods: Participants were selected by purposeful and snowball sampling. Participants were seafarers and their families. We conducted semi-structured interviews which were audio-recorded, transcribed, and loaded on Dedoose to facilitate line-by-line coding. Data was analyzed with a grounded theory approach using …

Prevalence And Health Burden Of Cardiovascular Disease In Older U.S. Veterans: Results From The 2019-2020 National Health And Resilience In Veterans Study, Cailin Arechiga

Public Health Theses

Importance. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. and is associated with a range of demographic, military, trauma, and clinical characteristics and physical and mental health conditions. Older military veterans may have an increased risk for CVD, given their advanced age and military experiences. However, the prevalence and health burden of CVD in population-based samples has not been well characterized. Objective. To characterize the current prevalence of CVD, and its association with sociodemographic, military, trauma, and clinical variables in a large, contemporary, and nationally representative sample of older U.S. veterans. Design. Cross-sectional study …

Without A Trace: Is Technology The Next Stage In Contact Tracing’S Evolution?, Madeline Bender Jan 2021

Without A Trace: Is Technology The Next Stage In Contact Tracing’S Evolution?, Madeline Bender

Public Health Theses

Contact tracing has become both a buzzword and a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though it was deployed nationwide in the U.S., its success varied regionally. This special project thesis, in the form of a longform journalism article, traces the public health practice back to its roots to explore who contact tracers are, what they do, and what factors contributed to tracing’s limited success in 2020–21, centering around concepts of stigma and privacy. With this foundation, it assesses the promise and perils of incorporating technology into contact tracing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Healthcare Provider Perspectives On The Influence Of Cultural Beliefs On Infant And Young Child Feeding Practices Within Ghanaian Refugee Camps: A Qualitative Analysis, Morgan Nadene Veronica Buchanan Jan 2021

Healthcare Provider Perspectives On The Influence Of Cultural Beliefs On Infant And Young Child Feeding Practices Within Ghanaian Refugee Camps: A Qualitative Analysis, Morgan Nadene Veronica Buchanan

Public Health Theses

Adherence to breastfeeding and complementary feeding recommendations is a proven strategy for promoting the well-being of infants and young children and ensuring their proper development. Cultural beliefs inform caregivers’ likelihood to follow these guidelines as they influence caregivers’ thoughts about maternal behavior during the prenatal and lactation periods, child feeding behaviors, and health. Refugee camps or settlements are a unique space to study the coexistence of cultural beliefs held by residents and staff. Understanding the pathways by which cultural beliefs modulate caregiver infant and young child feeding (IYCF) behavior (and therefore impact child health) within these settings is of paramount …

Overseen And Overlooked: Knowledge Production And Care In Public Health Surveillance, Krzysztof Wojciech Chwala Jan 2021

Overseen And Overlooked: Knowledge Production And Care In Public Health Surveillance, Krzysztof Wojciech Chwala

Public Health Theses

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, contact tracing was implemented as a public health measure to prevent the further spread of disease. In this thesis, I analyze contact tracing as a case study of public health surveillance. I argue that public health does not sufficiently study the social components and consequences of its surveillant activities, and as a result is hyperopic; it sees health-related phenomena at a distance with clarity, but has not brought its own logics under view. To remedy this, I utilize perspectives from the field of surveillance studies, which studies surveillance as social and cultural phenomena. …

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among A Diverse Community-Based Population In Connecticut, William Eger Jan 2021

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among A Diverse Community-Based Population In Connecticut, William Eger

Public Health Theses

Objectives. To examine the role of sociodemographic factors and health-related beliefs in influencing COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among a diverse community-based population.Methods. A sample of 252 Connecticut residents completed an online survey between August–December 2020. Utilizing a network of community partners and advertisements via social media, we recruited from communities most impacted by COVID-19. We used descriptive and multivariate analyses to examine vaccine hesitancy within this diverse community. Results. While 38.9% of participants were vaccine hesitant, people of color were more vaccine hesitant (OR=3.62; 95% CI 1.77, 7.40) compared to non-Hispanic whites/others in multivariate adjusted models. Additional factors associated with hesitancy …

Extreme Heat Vulnerability And Spatial Accessibility To Cooling Centers In Connecticut, Nicholas Elton Jan 2021

Extreme Heat Vulnerability And Spatial Accessibility To Cooling Centers In Connecticut, Nicholas Elton

Public Health Theses

Extreme heat is becoming an increasingly prevalent and prominent environmental health issue under climate change. The goal of this study is to evaluate heat vulnerability at the census tract level in the state of Connecticut and assess the spatial accessibility to cooling centers – an extreme heat intervention. A variety of environmental and sociodemographic variables related to heat and health were identified based on previous literature and used in a varimax-rotated principal component analysis to reduce dimensionality and identify key components that constitute a heat vulnerability score. In addition, cooling center locations were identified based on news media and a …

How Knowledge, Perception, And Identity Influence Covid-19-Related Concerns In The Built Environment, Abigail Ginader

Public Health Theses

Background: There is increasing research exploring how different diverse and intersecting identities based on race, gender, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and age interact with space to influence an individual’s inclusiveness and comfort in a space. This is particularly salient in the context of COVID-19 which has shown large health inequities and increased risk for certain vulnerable subgroups (e.g., older individuals, individuals of color). Objective: To assess end users’ perception of COVID-19 safety in the built environment of museums. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. An electronic survey was distributed between January and February 2021. Repeated measures ANOVA, multivariate Poisson regression, and …

Public Health Theses

Background. Suicidal behavior among Black youth is rising in the United States , yet little is known about how Black Youth engage and navigate suicidality.
