Revising The Nation: Tribal Sovereignty And The American History Textbook, 1929-2002, Grace R. Ellis
Revising The Nation: Tribal Sovereignty And The American History Textbook, 1929-2002, Grace R. Ellis
Library Map Prize
This thesis examines Indigenous representation in twentieth-century American history textbooks. Chapter One contends that the most popular U.S. history textbook of the late twentieth century, The American Pageant, erased tribal nations from its narrative and its maps. Across twelve editions (1956-2002), The Pageant taught generations of students that “Indians” served only as barriers to building the modern American nation-state. While Indigenous erasure can be traced back to specific passages in The Pageant, erasure can better be understood as an iterative process, both textual and cartographic in nature. Beginning in 1983, The Pageant added new maps that depicted tribes …
The Immunological Pathogenesis Of Persistent Lyme Disease And Babesiosis, Evan Navori
The Immunological Pathogenesis Of Persistent Lyme Disease And Babesiosis, Evan Navori
Public Health Theses
Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) and persistent babesiosis are late-stage manifestations of two tick-borne diseases. Both are characterized by protracted symptoms despite the use of standard antimicrobial treatment. PTLDS is thought to be associated with immune dysregulation rather than active infection, while persistent and relapsing babesiosis is due to long-lasting infection caused by host immunodeficiency, pathogen antimicrobial resistance, and immune evasion. This thesis examines the immunological host deficits underlying both conditions, one too strong and the other too weak, and explores the mechanisms that contribute to prolonged disease states. Numerous studies suggest that Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative bacteria of Lyme …
Beyond Vulnerability: Climate Change And The Moral Authority Of Youth, Amber Acquaye
Beyond Vulnerability: Climate Change And The Moral Authority Of Youth, Amber Acquaye
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Young people worldwide demand a voice in climate governance, yet their perspectives remain largely excluded from the moral frameworks that shape climate policy. This exclusion not only marginalizes children’s lived experiences and ethical reasoning but also perpetuates paternalistic norms and dangerous marginalization. To counter this, this thesis study shows that youth are not just passive stakeholders but moral agents whose perspectives yield a more just and comprehensive understanding of climate responsibility. Recognizing their ethical insights is crucial for medicine, especially pediatrics and child psychiatry, given how climate change amplifies health risks like respiratory illnesses, heat-related conditions, and eco-anxiety. Understanding how …
“A Double-Edged Sword”: Influence Of The 21st Century Cures Act On The Childhood Cancer Care Experience, Mona Clappier
“A Double-Edged Sword”: Influence Of The 21st Century Cures Act On The Childhood Cancer Care Experience, Mona Clappier
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The 21st Century Cures Act yielded policy change that allows patients toimmediately access components of their electronic health record (EHR) via an online portal. For children, adolescents, and young adults (AYAs) with cancer and their families, this federal mandate has profound implications. We sought to explore how immediate EHR portal access influences the childhood cancer care experience. We conducted semi-structured interviews with key informants, including parents of children with cancer, AYAs with cancer, and pediatric oncology healthcare professionals, at three National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Across 84 participants, 71% self-identified as women …

Inclusion criteria: age 18 years or older, traumatic SCI, and clinically significant depression (Population), mental health interventions including behavioral, pharmacological, and complementary and alternative medicine (Intervention), inclusion of a control group (Comparator), …
Trends In Missing Race And Ethnicity Data In A National Surgical Database, Kevin Gao Hu
Trends In Missing Race And Ethnicity Data In A National Surgical Database, Kevin Gao Hu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Accurate data collection on race and ethnicity is critical to detecting and characterizing disparities in surgical care. This study explores the prevalence and impact of missing race and ethnicity data in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project Pediatric (NSQIP Pediatric) database. NSQIP Pediatric from 2016-2020 was assessed for patients who were missing data for race (RM), ethnicity (EM), or both (BM). Changes in proportion of RM, EM, and BM patients were assessed with Cochran-Armitage tests. Surgical outcomes were modeled using linear mixed-effects models, treating CPT codes as random effects. Models were bootstrapped with 1000 iterations for each outcome. Of 596,571 …

Exploring The Journey To Heart Failure Diagnosis In Uganda, Teimur Kayani
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
This study sought to explore the healthcare journeys of patients recently diagnosed with heart failure (HF) in Uganda. Using a semi-structured guide developed in collaboration with Ugandan colleagues, we conducted in-depth interviews with 19 patients diagnosed with HF within the past three months across four regional referral hospitals in Uganda. Interviews were conducted in the participant’s preferred language (English, Luganda, Lugbara, Lugisu, or Swahili) using trained research assistants (RAs) and were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analyzed using the socioecological framework (SEM) to capture individual, interpersonal, community, and systemic-level barriers to HF care.Findings revealed a total of 11 themes spread …
Pre-Admission Sleep Of Patients In The Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Observational Study, Siddhi Nadkarni
Pre-Admission Sleep Of Patients In The Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Observational Study, Siddhi Nadkarni
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The medical intensive care unit (ICU) can be a challenging place for patients to get adequate sleep. Multiple environmental and pathophysiological factors can cause sleep deprivation in the ICU, which have been associated with adverse short and long-term outcomes. Although various factors have been hypothesized to impact quality of sleep in the ICU, research on the nature of patients’ pre-ICU sleep is very limited. Understanding the role that pre-ICU sleep plays in sleep quality in the ICU has the potential to inform public health measures to improve sleep and risk stratify critically ill patients. The objective of this study is …
The Use Of Biologic Agents In Cutaneous Immune-Related Adverse Events Due To Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors, Kailyn Valido
The Use Of Biologic Agents In Cutaneous Immune-Related Adverse Events Due To Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors, Kailyn Valido
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed the treatment landscape in the field of oncology due to their effective antineoplastic properties for various cancers. Though revolutionary in cancer treatment, their use is limited by various immune-related adverse events (irAE). Cutaneous immune-related adverse events (cirAE) are the most common type of irAE and encompass a spectrum of dermatological manifestations. These include lichenoid reactions, psoriasiform eruptions, eczematous dermatitis, immunobullous disorders, granulomatous reactions, pruritus (with or without a primary eruption), vitiligo, and severe cutaneous adverse reactions such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome.

Provider-Patient Alliance And Trauma Among Pregnant Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Molly Doernberg
Provider-Patient Alliance And Trauma Among Pregnant Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Molly Doernberg
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The goal of this project was to compare the provider-patient relationship among pregnant patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) who did or did not have a history of moderate to severe trauma. The hypothesis was that patients with a trauma history would self-report worse relationships with their providers. This was an exploratory analysis of data from 169 patients enrolled in the Support Models for Addiction Related Treatment (SMART) trial. Trauma history, defined as probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), was determined by a score ≥31 on the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). The provider-patient relationship, collected at 26±4 weeks of pregnancy, …

A Theory Of Economic Justice, Marshall Paul Forrester
A Theory Of Economic Justice, Marshall Paul Forrester
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation develops a theory of economic justice. It begins with an economic state of nature, much like Hobbes's political state of nature. In the economic state of nature, there is no economic cooperation through the division of labor and specialization, and everyone is very poor. The purpose of the dissertation is to identify the conditions for just economic cooperation. I argue that each participant in economic cooperation should be rewarded according to their contributions. The first chapter draws on Henry George to argue that there is a fundamental difference between land and the other two factors of production, labor …

Emotion Inferences: An Integrative And Dynamic Process, Srishti Goel
Emotion Inferences: An Integrative And Dynamic Process, Srishti Goel
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Our understanding of what others around us feel, a process referred to as emotion inference, fundamentally shapes our behavior and social interactions. Early work largely focused on how people infer emotions from isolated, static, canonical facial expressions. Accumulating evidence and theoretical advancements suggest that emotion inference, instead, is a complex process that involves making meaning about a target’s experience by dynamically synthesizing information from multiple sources with existing knowledge. Yet, a comprehensive empirical account that captures this complexity is largely missing from the literature. In this dissertation, I propose and systematically test a research framework that addresses this complexity of …

Men Take Care Of Each Other”: Evaluation Of A Community-Based Model For Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Services Among Male Bar Patrons In Rural South Africa, Phoebe Chen
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Low engagement with HIV services persists among young men with harmful alcohol use in South Africa. We previously piloted a rural community-based HIV service delivery model to engage this key population. In the initial study, male nurses visited alcohol-serving venues to provide HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services. From November 1 to December 30, 2021, we conducted interviews with 17 of 34 male pilot participants to evaluate program barriers, facilitators, and suggestions. All Interviewees were satisfied with HIV testing and PrEP services. Participants overcame testing avoidance through peer influence and enhanced privacy. Barriers for PrEP initiation were stigma (PrEP …
The Mirror Of Scripture: Historical Memory, Translation, And The Bible In Early Modernity, 1450-1660, Colin Glen Hoch
The Mirror Of Scripture: Historical Memory, Translation, And The Bible In Early Modernity, 1450-1660, Colin Glen Hoch
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Contributing to the latest thematic trends in early modern studies, this dissertation project maintains that contested historical memory, or the competing ways that European Christians envisioned themselves as part of an ancient and authoritative biblical tradition, constituted the creative engine at the heart of shaping the early modern Bible (c.1450- 1660). In an era when successful claims to custom and antiquity conferred the highest legitimacy, historical memory was a critical source of identity and authority, even if, as recent theorists of early modern memory assert, memory itself meant something different in the period. The Bible in myriad forms served as …
Reading Into Things: Articulate Objects In North America, 1650-1820, Lily Higgins
Reading Into Things: Articulate Objects In North America, 1650-1820, Lily Higgins
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In the eighteenth century, it-narratives emerged as a new literary genre, elevating objects to the role of heroes and heroines. Investing fictional objects with the power to participate in human affairs, these stories offer insight into how the contemporaneous reading public grappled with the agency of objects in real life. Responding to questions about agency and subjectivity provoked within the early modern it-narrative, this dissertation considers how actual objects made and used within an ever-widening world of material goods were “speaking” to people in new ways, both exciting and disconcerting. Defining these “speaking” things as “articulate objects,” the research suggests …
Essays In Economics, Paul Schmidt-Engelbertz
Essays In Economics, Paul Schmidt-Engelbertz
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three essays in economics.
The first essay, joint with Julia Selgrad and Samuel Slocum, is titled `The Impact of Geopolitical Tensions on International Investment and Asset Prices'. This paper examines the effects of geopolitical tensions on investment decisions and asset prices by studying the holdings of international mutual funds as well as the returns of the assets they hold. We show that increases in tensions between geopolitical adversaries lead to significant divestment between the two countries involved. In addition, the prices of assets that are divested from fall. Through studying mutual fund disclosures, we find that …
Hölderlin's Naturalism: Nature And Human Agency After Kant, Saurabh Saurendra Pal
Hölderlin's Naturalism: Nature And Human Agency After Kant, Saurabh Saurendra Pal
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on Friedrich Hölderlin’s engagement with human self-relating to the natural world in the wake of Kantian rethinking of the human being as a normative subject. While it has often been noted that following the Pantheism controversy of the 1780s, a generation of poets and thinkers looked towards Spinozistic monism to overcome the dualisms and limitations of Kant’s Copernican revolution, the relevance of this development to moral concerns has received less consideration. This study proposes that the recurrent theme of “unification with nature” in Hölderlin’s literary and theoretical writings signifies a yearning for moral community¬—rather than metaphysical union—with …

Navigating The Neighborhood: Community, Identity, And Gentrification In Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Kayla Karyl Thomas
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. This dissertation is a multi-method community study focusing on 21st century gentrification, concurrent socio-political changes, and their relationship to the ways residents understand and negotiate routine interpersonal relationships. The empirical core of the dissertation consists of three distinct yet interrelated papers on the social landscape of the contemporary Crown Heights neighborhood. These papers detail a range of approaches that residents adopt to better understand their own experiences of discrimination, gentrification, and efforts at reconstructing community and responding to change. Complemented by a chapter on the history of a single ‘representative’ Crown Heights apartment building, its …

Psychosocial Correlates Of Hiv Prevention, Care, And Well-Being Among Older Women Aging With Hiv, Thi Vu
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Background: Approximately 54% of the nearly 1.1 million people living with diagnosed HIV in the United States are aged 50 and older. From 2015 to 2019, diagnoses among women ages 55 years and older increased by 7% while diagnoses among other age groups decreased. In 2019, women made up 19% of all HIV diagnoses. Despite advances in HIV science and education, there is still a dearth of research focused on the growing population of older women with HIV. Durvasula’s Contextualized Model for HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention for Older Women highlights that older women with HIV face different barriers to care, …
