Rise Of The Modern Mediatrix: The Feminization Of Media And Mediating Labor, 1865-1945, Leana Hirschfeld-Kroen Oct 2021

Rise Of The Modern Mediatrix: The Feminization Of Media And Mediating Labor, 1865-1945, Leana Hirschfeld-Kroen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation uncovers a vast archive of fictional female telegraph, telephone, and typewriter girls, combining rigorous historical research with feminist, psychoanalytic readings of mass cultural texts to show how the global gendering of low-level communication work shaped modern media. It begins in the United States, where women first performed this work, and explores three further national contexts (France, Germany, and Britain) where female operators and typists circulated as media icons of techno-social connection in an increasingly atomized age. The title “modern mediatrix” describes the essential mediating role white-collar woman workers have played in modern media infrastructure, from switchboard to editing …

Characterization Of Postoperative Recovery After Cardiac Surgery- Insights Into Predicting Individualized Recovery Pattern, Makoto Mori Oct 2021

Characterization Of Postoperative Recovery After Cardiac Surgery- Insights Into Predicting Individualized Recovery Pattern, Makoto Mori

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Understanding the patterns of postoperative recovery after cardiac surgery is important from several perspectives: to facilitate patient-centered treatment decision making, to inform health care policy targeted to improve postoperative recovery, and to guide patient care after cardiac surgery. Our works aimed to address the following: 1) to summarize existing approaches to measuring and reporting postoperative recovery after cardiac surgery, 2) to develop a framework to efficiently measure patient-reported outcome measures to understand longitudinal recovery process, and 3) to explore ways to summarize the longitudinal recovery data in an actionable way, and 4) to evaluate whether addition of patient information generated …

At The Intersection Of Temporal & Modal Interpretation, Josh Phillips Oct 2021

At The Intersection Of Temporal & Modal Interpretation, Josh Phillips

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This work is chiefly concerned with the semantics of linguistic categories including tense, modality and negation and the relationships between them. In particular, how do they interact in order to “displace” discourse and to talk about situations remote from the time & place where they're produced? What gets conventionally encoded in linguistic expressions (semantics)? And what's the role of discourse context and extralinguistic factors (pragmatics) in performing these operations? The current thesis contains three connected (but independent) components; each explores different sets of data in view of understanding particular types of displacement phenomena — that is, how, in a given …

Minimizing Tracer Interference To Assess In Vivo Hepatic Metabolism With Glutamine-Generated Mass Isotopomers, Stephan Siebel Oct 2021

Minimizing Tracer Interference To Assess In Vivo Hepatic Metabolism With Glutamine-Generated Mass Isotopomers, Stephan Siebel

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Stable isotope tracers are widely used to study the in vivo kinetics of central carbon metabolism in diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, despite their common use, 13C-labeled acetate, lactate, and propionate have led to large incongruities and inconsistencies in their in vivo measurement of hepatic metabolism. To resolve major discrepancies and recent controversies of hepatic metabolism we developed and validated [1,2-13C2]-L-glutamine as a novel tracer strategy for measuring hepatic central carbon metabolism. In our rodent studies [1,2-13C2]-L-glutamine generated a straightforward labeling pattern of key metabolites suitable for the interpretation …

Social Control And Incarceration In Lesotho: A History Of Strategies, 1850-1970, Samuel John Severson Oct 2021

Social Control And Incarceration In Lesotho: A History Of Strategies, 1850-1970, Samuel John Severson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation explores how technologies and infrastructures for promoting control and cohesion have interfaced with the social and political history of Lesotho over the longue durée. This approach allows for tracing lines of historical continuity and change during a period spanning the coalescing of the nation from communities on the Southern African Highveld in the early-19th century, the onset and grinding realities of British colonial rule and the rise of a local economy dependent on labor migration to South Africa, and the unravelling of empire and the challenges of governance in the years following official national liberation in 1966. I …

Commerce And Justice: Ottoman And Venetian Courts In Istanbul During The Seventeenth Century, Tommaso Stefini Oct 2021

Commerce And Justice: Ottoman And Venetian Courts In Istanbul During The Seventeenth Century, Tommaso Stefini

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

"Commerce and Justice: Ottoman and Venetian Courts in Istanbul during the Seventeenth Century” analyzes legal disputes and economic transactions between Ottoman and Venetian merchants in Istanbul on a daily basis between 1600 and1620. At that time, the Venetians constituted the largest European community in the Ottoman capital, and they engaged intensively in trade ventures with Ottoman businessmen belonging to different religious and ethnic communities, including Muslim Turks, Sephardic Jews, and Orthodox Greeks. This dissertation asks how Ottomans and Venetians cooperated in commercial undertakings and solved controversies despite the absence of a system of inter-polity law and secular legal regimes in …

Craft And Storytelling: Romance And Reality In Joseph Conrad And Gabriel García Márquez, Camila Velez Valencia Oct 2021

Craft And Storytelling: Romance And Reality In Joseph Conrad And Gabriel García Márquez, Camila Velez Valencia

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation describes how the novels, novellas and short stories of Joseph Conrad and Gabriel García Márquez subvert the conventions of the European realist novel and indeed the quotidian world of real facts itself in favor of a romance grounded in everyday experience. In their fictions, Conrad’s and García Márquez’s narrators trace the apparition of the wonderful in an otherwise realistic world through their mastery of craft and its concomitant vernaculars. They draw on the tropes of the traditional romance—digression, repetition and chance—to reenchant disenchanted worlds, to reconstrue the strange. They borrow the skills of the oral storyteller—craftsmanship, gesture and …

Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Generation With Anthraquinone Chemistry For Advanced Oxidation Process, Qianhong Zhu Oct 2021

Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Generation With Anthraquinone Chemistry For Advanced Oxidation Process, Qianhong Zhu

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Hydrogen peroxide plays a critical role in many industrial applications, including chemical synthesis and environmental remediation. For example, in advanced oxidation process of water treatment, hydrogen peroxide is activated to hydroxyl radical by catalysts or UV light for non-selective and rapid degradation of non-biodegradable, toxic, recalcitrant organic micropollutants. Industrial anthraquinone process, which synthesizes hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen gas in organic phase, requires intensive capital investment, expensive reactants, high energy inputs, and raises many environmental concerns. Electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide with air, water and electricity as inputs has emerged as a promising alternative method because it is low-cost, …

Linguistic Variation From Cognitive Variability: The Case Of English 'Have', Muye Zhang Oct 2021

Linguistic Variation From Cognitive Variability: The Case Of English 'Have', Muye Zhang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In this dissertation, I seek to construct a model of meaning variation built upon variability in linguistic structure, conceptual structure, and cognitive makeup, and in doing so, exemplify an approach to studying meaning that is both linguistically principled and neuropsychologically grounded. As my test case, I make use of the English lexical item 'have' by proposing a novel analysis of its meaning based on its well-described variability in English and its embedding into crosslinguistically consistent patterns of variation and change. I support this analysis by investigating its real-time comprehension patterns through behavioral, electropsychophysiological, and hemodynamic brain data, thereby incorporating dimensions …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Aging And Alzheimer’S Disease, Shannon Noble Leslie Oct 2021

Molecular Mechanisms Of Aging And Alzheimer’S Disease, Shannon Noble Leslie

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a major public health crisis. AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Currently, there are no disease-modifying drugs available for the treatment of AD. Although autosomal dominant genetic forms of the disease are very rare, they are the foundation for many models of study; in part, because the etiology of the far more common, sporadic AD, remains unknown. While the cause of most AD cases is undetermined, age is a well-known, significant risk factor. The work presented in this thesis relies on studies of non-genetically modified aging rodents and …

It argues, overall, that the subjectivities of those living with, treating, and advocating for HIV/AIDS cannot be understood without …

Next Generation Phenotyping In Clinical Trial Based On Real-World Data, Guannan Gong Oct 2021

Next Generation Phenotyping In Clinical Trial Based On Real-World Data, Guannan Gong

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Real-world data (RWD) or information generated outside of a traditional clinical trial, including electronic health records (EHRs), insurance claims and billing activity, product and disease registries, medical devices used in the home, and applications (apps) on mobile devices, provide a key analyte that can be used to advance biomedical investigation and drive discovery. While RWD can have significant value, analysis of these data has limitations and often requires new analytic approaches. One of the key areas in utilizing RWD is identifying patients with certain characteristics of interest through a process known as digital phenotyping. Although great benefits and potentials, identifying …

Writing Union Into Resistance: How Committees Of Correspondence Forged A Continental Community, Catherine Treesh Oct 2021

Writing Union Into Resistance: How Committees Of Correspondence Forged A Continental Community, Catherine Treesh

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Committees of correspondence, made famous by Samuel Adams and his cohort in Boston during the American Revolution, actually operated in the large majority of Britain’s Atlantic colonies in the eighteenth century. Before 1764, colonists used these committees to make their political opinions known to lobbyists in England; after 1764, colonists largely used committees to discuss politics amongst themselves. Colonial assemblies, private groups of political radicals or merchants, and local town meetings all chose committees of correspondence – groups of 3-15 men who met regularly – to share their political opinions and organize protests over the following decade. In “Writing Union …

Architectures Of The Humanitarian Front, 1915-1930 The American Red Cross And The Refugee Settlement Commission Of The League Of Nations, Theodossios Issaias Oct 2021

Architectures Of The Humanitarian Front, 1915-1930 The American Red Cross And The Refugee Settlement Commission Of The League Of Nations, Theodossios Issaias

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines a period around WWI when conflict, displacement, and territorial insecurity provoked the reconfiguration of humanitarian operations –their spatial organization and ethical imperatives. Between the 1910s and 1930s, a flurry of humanitarian activity emerged, old institutions were restructured, new institutions were formed, and new methods of action crystalized, entrenching representations, languages, and practices that have stayed with us ever since. The dissertation begins with an examination of the American Red Cross (ARC, 1881-), as it transformed from a relatively unknown philanthropic society into the only recognized relief organization responsible for administering foreign aid on the country’s behalf. Contingent …

Binary Logic: Race, Expertise, And The Persistence Of Uncertainty In American Sex Research, Beans Velocci Oct 2021

Binary Logic: Race, Expertise, And The Persistence Of Uncertainty In American Sex Research, Beans Velocci

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, American researchers tried to sort the living world by sex. Their efforts created more taxonomic problems than they solved, but as they encountered vast quantities of evidence that did not at all show an obvious or stable division between male and female bodies, they used sexual uncertainty to their professional and ideological advantage. This dissertation traces a network of scientists who built their own claims to expertise, as well as theories of racial hierarchy rooted in sexual difference, out of sexually unruly bodies. While much scholarship on the history of sex science describes the …

Toward A Media-Technological Approach To Films: Meaning-Making, Objects, And Procedures, Ido Lewit Oct 2021

Toward A Media-Technological Approach To Films: Meaning-Making, Objects, And Procedures, Ido Lewit

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Film is a technological medium, and as one which is also mimetic, it often includes other technologies and media among its representations. The dissertation focuses on the intermedial encounter that occurs when film hosts other media and argues that the hosted media have the potential to inflect modes of expression and determine discourse and meaning in films that incorporate them. For the purpose of studying the intermedial encounter as a generator of discourse, the dissertation concentrates on the operation of technologies and media as they are remediated through the medium of the moving image. Within the intermedial encounter the specific operations …

Ferroelectric Hf0.5zr0.5o2: ’Negative Capacitance’ And Wake-Up Effect, Zhan Liu Oct 2021

Ferroelectric Hf0.5zr0.5o2: ’Negative Capacitance’ And Wake-Up Effect, Zhan Liu

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Ferroelectricity has been studied for more than a century since its discovery in 1920. The unique feature of two spontaneous polarization states making ferroelectric materials favorable for semiconductor memory and several ferroelectric materials have been commercialized, including Lead zirconate titanate (PZT), Strontium Bismuth Tantalate (SBT), and barium titanate (BTO). Commercial FeRAM memory has been used in low-power microcontrollers and other embedded applications. However, due to the scaling and process compatibility issues, ferroelectric memory never becomes a mainstream memory technology. In 2011, Hf-based ferroelectric materials are discovered. The promising scalability and CMOS-friendly fabrication process making Hf-based ferroelectrics a potential game-changer for …

Making And Debating Empires In South Asia And The Global British Empire, 1756-1799, Tiraana Bains Oct 2021

Making And Debating Empires In South Asia And The Global British Empire, 1756-1799, Tiraana Bains

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Why did a strong centralizing British imperial state emerge in South Asia in the eighteenth century? The partial loss of the British Empire in North America, the ferment of partisan politics in Britain and the rise of powerful regional South Asian states during this period amply demonstrate that such a transformation was not inevitable. This dissertation argues that continuous and multi-sited contestation drove British imperial state-building in South Asia. The formation of a centralizing British imperial state in South Asia was not only violent and coercive but, akin to the concurrent emergence of the United States of America and revolutionary …

Iron Archipelago: Environment And Industry In Early Modern And Modern Japan, Joanna Morgan Linzer Oct 2021

Iron Archipelago: Environment And Industry In Early Modern And Modern Japan, Joanna Morgan Linzer

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines Japan's homegrown iron industry during its heyday in the Tokugawa period (1603-1868) and as it persisted deep into the twentieth century, paying particular attention to its environmental consequences. Other societies have seen their metals industries grow and develop in times of war. During the long-lasting peace of the Tokugawa period, the inhabitants of the mountains of Chūgoku developed technologies of mining and smelting to produce increasing quantities of iron. This one region supplied most of the iron used across the archipelago for such fundamental purposes as farming implements, tools, and samurai swords. Chapter 1 explores how local …

The Politics Of Play: Digital Youth, New Media, And Social Movement In Contemporary Vietnam, Tri Phuong Oct 2021

The Politics Of Play: Digital Youth, New Media, And Social Movement In Contemporary Vietnam, Tri Phuong

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Abstract The Politics of Play:Digital Youth, New Media, and Social Movement in Contemporary Vietnam Tri Mac Phuong 2021 This dissertation examines the role of media and the mediascape of contemporary Vietnam some 40 years after national reunification as provocation, palimpsest, and portent to a number of citizen-subject formations, sociopolitical negotiations, and cultural upheavals. In particular, I look at how the Internet and related digital technologies influence urban youth’s civic life, communal ties, and social imaginations, and how these so-called new media intersect and interact with older forms of media at particular conjunctures to produce new values, beliefs, habits, functions, and …

Pictures As Mirrors For Shah Tahmasb: How Manuscript Paintings Shaped Court Culture In Early Modern Iran, Selin Unluonen Oct 2021

Pictures As Mirrors For Shah Tahmasb: How Manuscript Paintings Shaped Court Culture In Early Modern Iran, Selin Unluonen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how sixteenth-century manuscript paintings shaped courtly identity and behavior at a time of sweeping political change in Iran. During the first half of the sixteenth century, rulers of the new Safavid dynasty in Iran commissioned richly illustrated manuscripts. Turning to a corpus of paintings from a royal copy of the medieval Persian epic Khamsa, this study examines these paintings in light of the numerous extratextual inscriptions incorporated into the pictorial world (an unstudied body of evidence despite the book’s renown), and puts them in dialogue with autobiographical writings, court chronicles, diplomatic letters, and literary anthologies from the …

The Barāhima’S Dilemma: Ibn Al-Rāwandī’S Kitāb Al-Zumurrud And The Epistemological Turn In The Debate On Prophecy, Elizabeth Grace Price Oct 2021

The Barāhima’S Dilemma: Ibn Al-Rāwandī’S Kitāb Al-Zumurrud And The Epistemological Turn In The Debate On Prophecy, Elizabeth Grace Price

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

After the turn of the 10th century, Muslim theologians began to cite a puzzling thought experiment in their discussions of prophecy, which took the form of the following two-horned dilemma: either a prophet conveys what is in accordance with reason, so they would be superfluous, or a prophet conveys what is contrary to reason, so they would be rejected. This thought experiment was cited on the authority of a group called the Barāhima. The Barāhima’s own solution to the conundrum was simple – they did not recognise a need for prophets or revealed scriptures, because humans could obtain knowledge of …

The Development And Study Of Enantioselective Peptide-Catalyzed Halogenation And Oxidation Reactions, Elizabeth A. Stone Oct 2021

The Development And Study Of Enantioselective Peptide-Catalyzed Halogenation And Oxidation Reactions, Elizabeth A. Stone

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Inspired by nature’s nonpareil catalysts, enzymes, our lab designs small peptides to catalyze selective transformations. This dissertation describes the catalytic prowess of peptides bearing β-dimethylaminoalanine (Dmaa) or aspartic acid (Asp) to mediate halogenation and oxidation reactions, respectively. The development of novel reactions goes hand in hand with understanding mechanistic nuances of known transformations. Herein, we focus on this synergy as we develop tools to better understand structure-activity relations and implications of reported peptide-catalyzed reactions and apply these lessons to uncover novel reactivity. In particular, we explore the ramifications of subtle structural changes to the substrate and catalyst motifs as well …

This Country Is Exceedingly Fertile: Gender, African American Emigration, And Visions Of Rural Autonomy In Haiti, 1824-1880, Bianca Elan Dang Oct 2021

This Country Is Exceedingly Fertile: Gender, African American Emigration, And Visions Of Rural Autonomy In Haiti, 1824-1880, Bianca Elan Dang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation argues that African Americans' and Haitians' advocacy for labor autonomy, land claims, and mobility illuminate how gender politics shifted across the nineteenth century as emancipation unfolded throughout the Americas. It demonstrates how Haitians and African Americans developed a hemispheric, gendered understanding of collective and individual freedom as bound up with enduring access to land. Haitian-state sponsored emigration movements in the 1820s and 1860s offered African Americans both land grants and the possibility of escape from white supremacist violence and political marginalization. In the same period, rural Haitians developed their own claims to land by contesting the state's attempts …

Specters Of Exhaustion: The Phenomenology Of Action And The Horizon Of Critique, Nica Siegel Oct 2021

Specters Of Exhaustion: The Phenomenology Of Action And The Horizon Of Critique, Nica Siegel

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In 1986, tracking the erosion of the Welfare State project, Jürgen Habermas wroteof “the exhaustion of utopian energies.” Emerging in the first instance from a waning- Cold War account of the disappointing afterlives of the European left, the claim of his essay was just as equally about the capacity of critique to renew its own project. Although the institutional priorities emerging from Habermas’s diagnosis have been influential for political theory, the challenge of exhaustion has yet to be answered, or even properly problematized. Now, some forty years after Cold War claims to the “end of history,” confronted with specters of …
