Development And Validation Of A Virtual Uam, Stacey M. Ahuja, Thomas Z. Strybel, Kim-Phuong L. Vu, Panadda Marayong, Praveen Shankar, Vernol Battiste

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) refers to a system of passenger and cargo air-transportation vehicles within an urban area that is currently being designed to reduce demands for surface transportation. Their success depends on whether many obstacles to UAM operations are overcome. An important challenge to UAM success is the inability of the current air traffic management system to manage urban airspace, and new procedures and operating concepts are needed for coordination of UAM vehicles with existing commercial airspace traffic. Moreover, all systems currently under development initially will require remote or onboard pilots, and these pilots will need significant training to …

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

Weather continues to play a significant role in general aviation (GA) events. GA pilots use various technologies to access and view weather information in the cockpit. These technologies range from handheld devices to installed displays. A contributing factor in many weather-related events was the pilots' failure to correctly interpret the displayed weather information compared to what was observed out the window. This session will highlight ongoing Human Factors (HF) research aimed at understanding and addressing this problem. Topics include an overview of the FAA’s Weather Technology in the Cockpit (WTIC) program; barriers to automating and implementing a speech-to-coded Pilot Report …

Learning About Routine Successful Pilot Techniques Using A Cued Retrospective Think-Aloud Task, Jon Holbrook, Chad Stephens, Lawrence J. Prinzel Iii, Sepehr Bastami, Daniel Kiggins

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

Self-report can be a valuable method for collecting data about people’s goals and perceived motivations – data about aspects of crew thinking that are not otherwise readily observable. One of the challenges associated with collecting self-report data on routine successful performance, however, is that details may go unreported, be deemed unimportant, or may not be recalled. We report a study in which commercial airline flight crews participated in a video-cued retrospective think aloud after flying a high-fidelity simulated arrival into Charlotte airport. One day after flying the simulated arrival, crews were shown a video recording of their flight. The video …

On The Appropriate Participant Expertise For Display Evaluation Studies, M. M. Van Paassen, Clark Borst, Max Mulder, Gijs De Rooij, Ferdinand Dijkstra, Adam Balint Tisza

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

Expert participants may not always be available for evaluation of new displays or support systems, and in some cases, it might be better to use novice participants, particularly when the display or support significantly changes existing work practices. To provide tools and arguments for selecting the expertise level of participants, we propose the use of Rasmussen’s decision ladder to analyze where and how a new visualization or a support tool changes the task, and identify steps where a novice participant may learn to perform the task to an acceptable level. A comparison to the support with the current operational interfaces …

A Competency Framework For Aviation Psychologists And Human Factors Specialists In Aviation, Sonja Biede, Federic Detaille, Optihum, Tina Narotra, Katarina Petrovic, Hermann Rathje, Alessandra Rea, Michaela Schwarz, Anna Vereker

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

The new Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/1042 on technical requirements and administrative procedures includes psychological assessment of flight crew which refers to accredited Aviation Psychologists (AVPSY). However, the associated acceptable meansof compliance and guidance material does not provide a specific definition or requirements of such psychologists. Likewise, the term Aviation Human Factors Specialist (AVHFS) has not yet been legally recognised in Europe. AVHFS lacks a European definition and no pan-European competency-based endorsement exists. This paper reports the development of a competency framework by members of the European Association for Aviation Psychology (EAAP) and intendeduse in accreditation for AVPSY and AVHFS. It …

Mining Themes In Clinical Notes To Identify Phenotypes And To Predict Length Of Stay In Patients Admitted With Heart Failure, Ankita Agarwal, Tanvi Banerjee, William Romine, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Lingwei Chen, Mia Cajita

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Heart failure is a syndrome which occurs when the heart is not able to pump blood and oxygen to support other organs in the body. Identifying the underlying themes in the diagnostic codes and procedure reports of patients admitted for heart failure could reveal the clinical phenotypes associated with heart failure and to group patients based on their similar characteristics which could also help in predicting patient outcomes like length of stay. These clinical phenotypes usually have a probabilistic latent structure and hence, as there has been no previous work on identifying phenotypes in clinical notes of heart failure patients …

Clarifying The Role Of E-Government Trust In E-Government Success Models: A Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Apeksha Hooda, Parul Gupta, Anand Jeyaraj, Yogesh K. Dwivedi

Management Information Systems Faculty Publications

E-government implementation success is of critical importance for nations. Prior information systems (IS) success models emphasize the effects of information quality, service quality, system quality, and user satisfaction but do not consider e-government trust. This study incorporates e-government trust into the IS success model and empirically tests the model on empirical findings reported in 67 prior studies using meta-analysis methods and structural equation modeling. Our analysis shows that: a) information quality, service quality, system quality, and user satisfaction influence e-government trust, and b) system use mediates the effect of e-government trust on intention to use e-government systems in the future.

In this work, we propose a sustainable path-finding application for grain transportation during the ongoing Russian military invasion in Ukraine. This application is to build a suite of algorithms to find possible optimal paths for transporting grain that remains in Ukraine. The application uses the KNowledge Acquisition and Representation Methodology(KNARM) and the KnowWhereGraph to achieve this goal. Currently, we are working towards creating an ontology that will allow for a more effective heuristic approach by incorporating the lessons learned from the KnowWhereGraph. The aim is to enhance the path-finding process and provide more accurate and efficient results. In the future, …

Occupaional Segregaion, Lack Of Diversity And Pay Gap In Computer Science Professions, Shriraksha Mohan

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

Mainstream economists have propagated the “Human Capital” theory emphasizing the link between innate abilities of the labor force and wages earned by them to justify occupational segregation between genders and the wage gap.Proponents of this theory advanced the notion that women are less likely to invest time in building skills through education and job-related training, unlike men do, because women anticipate spending more time than men do at home performing household work. In challenging this theory, feminist economist Barbara Bergamann proposed the “Crowding” hypothesis in which she argues that there are fewer female-dominated occupations than there are male-dominated ones. This …

ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a neurodegenerative disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function. The C9 Gene is responsible for creating proteins that help neurons send and receive signals across the synapse. Small Conductance calcium activated potassium channels (SK channels) affect the hyperpolarization phase of an action potential. Hypothesis: SK2 and SK3 clusters of C9 positive cells should decrease in size and intensity when exposed to a disease state compared to C9 negative controls.

Journal of Bioresource Management

The livestock sector plays fundamental role in Pakistan's economy, and a variety of ruminants (cattle and buffaloes) are raised to meet the rising demand for milk, meat, and hide goods. Ticks are the most common vectors for the transmission of tick-borne disease and several pathogens to animals and people. Ticks are widespread in Pakistan due to the country's favorable subtropical climate, and they parasitize large and small ruminants, causing infestation and mortality, as well as economic losses to herdsmen. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the tick’s epidemiology in large animals in the selected Southern regions of Pakistan, during the …

Predicting Thermoelectric Power Factor Of Bismuth Telluride During Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing, Ankita Agarwal, Tanvi Banerjee, Joy Gockel, Saniya Leblanc, Joe Walker, John Middendorf

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

An additive manufacturing (AM) process, like laser powder bed fusion, allows for the fabrication of objects by spreading and melting powder in layers until a freeform part shape is created. In order to improve the properties of the material involved in the AM process, it is important to predict the material characterization property as a function of the processing conditions. In thermoelectric materials, the power factor is a measure of how efficiently the material can convert heat to electricity. While earlier works have predicted the material characterization properties of different thermoelectric materials using various techniques, implementation of machine learning models …
