The intentional production of animals is predicated on their genetic proficiency, which is dependent on optimal resource utilization and manipulation of biotic and abiotic environmental components to increase production for societal sustenance. The annual global consumption of sheep meat is approximately 2.5 kilograms per individual, out of a total of 41.6 kilograms. Three management systems are used to rear sheep: extensive wool and meat production, intensive milk production, and traditional pastoralism. Possessing adequate resources for sheep husbandry contributes to positive welfare outcomes. This review examined the rearing, breeding, and future potential of Damani sheep in Pakistan. Damani sheep are a …

Influence Of Municipal Solid Waste Dumpsite On Soil Physicochemical Properties And Vertical Distribution Of Heavy Metals, Chukwuebuka V. Azuka, Chikamso Ezeme
Journal of Bioresource Management
The management of municipal solid waste (MSW) through open dumping or open burning has been a very common practice in Nigeria. The work investigated the impact of these practices on soil physicochemical properties and the vertical distribution of heavy metals at two dumpsites at Obollo-Afor and Nsukka in Southeastern Nigeria. Soil samples were collected at 10 m apart at depths of 0-20, 20-40, 40-60 cm from the dumpsite and at 100 m away from the dumpsite for the determination of soil physicochemical properties. A profile pit was dug at the center of each dumpsite while soil sample collection was done …
Fatigue Behavior Of Cu-Zr Metallic Glasses Under Cyclic Loading, Nikolai Priezjev
Fatigue Behavior Of Cu-Zr Metallic Glasses Under Cyclic Loading, Nikolai Priezjev
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The effect of oscillatory shear deformation on the fatigue life, yielding transition, and flow localization in metallic glasses is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study a well-annealed Cu-Zr amorphous alloy subjected to periodic shear at room temperature. We find that upon loading for hundreds of cycles at strain amplitudes just below a critical value, the potential energy at zero strain remains nearly constant and plastic events are highly localized. By contrast, at strain amplitudes above the critical point, the plastic deformation is gradually accumulated upon continued loading until the yielding transition and the formation of a shear band across …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Phylogenetic relationships within the oestroid subclades Rhinophorinae (Calliphoridae) and Polleniidae were reconstructed for the first time, applying a Sanger sequencing approach using the two protein-coding nuclear markers CAD (carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase 2, aspartate transcarbamylase, and dihydroorotase; 1794 bp) and MCS (molybdenum cofactor sulfurase; 2078 bp). Three genera of Polleniidae and nineteen genera of Rhinophorinae were analyzed together with a selection of taxa representing the major lineages of Oestroidea (non-rhinophorine Calliphoridae, Oestridae, Sarcophagidae, Tachinidae). The selected markers provide good resolution and moderate to strong support of the distal branches, but weak support for several deeper nodes. Polleniidae (cluster flies) emerge as monophyletic …

Gabaergic Synaptic Scaling Is Triggered By Changes In Spiking Activity Rather Than Transmitter Receptor Activation, Carlos Gonzalez-Islas, Zahraa Sabra, Ming-Fai Fong, Pernille Bülow, Nicholas Au Yong, Kathrin Engisch, Peter Wenner
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Homeostatic plasticity represents a set of mechanisms that are thought to recover some aspect of neural function. One such mechanism called AMPAergic scaling was thought to be a likely candidate to homeostatically control spiking activity. However, recent findings have forced us to reconsider this idea as several studies suggest AMPAergic scaling is not directly triggered by changes in spiking. Moreover, studies examining homeostatic perturbations in vivo have suggested that GABAergic synapses may be more critical in terms of spiking homeostasis. Here we show results that GABAergic scaling can act to homeostatically control spiking levels. We find that increased or decreased …

Morphology And Hemodynamics Of Cerebral Arteries And Aneurysms In A Rare Pair Of Monozygotic Twins, Hang Yi, Zifeng Yang, Luke C. Bramlage, Bryan R. Ludwig
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
In this preliminary study, the underlying pathophysiology mechanisms of cerebral aneurysms (CAs) in monozygotic twins (MTs) were investigated via a rare pair of MTs (twin A and twin B) involving four reconstructed arterial models using preclinical information. First, dimensions and configurated outlines of three-perspective geometries were compared. Adopting an in-vitro validated numerical CA model, hemodynamic characteristics were investigated in the MTs, respectively. Despite expected genetic similarities, morphological comparisons show that configurations of cerebral arteries exhibit significant differences between the twins. The ICA size of twin A is larger than that in twin B (2.23~25.86%), varying with specific locations, attributing to …
Interview Of Pilots’ Inflight Loss Of Control Experiences, Neelakshi Majumdar, Karen Marais
Interview Of Pilots’ Inflight Loss Of Control Experiences, Neelakshi Majumdar, Karen Marais
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
Inflight loss of control (LOC-I) continues to be a significant cause of General Aviation fixed-wing aircraft accidents. Nearly 20% of fixed-wing aircraft accidents in the last two decades involved LOC-I, and approximately 45% of LOC-I accidents are fatal. Previous studies suggest that the leading factors in aviation accidents are human factors-related. One approach to better understand the causes of LOC-I accidents is to analyze accidents using sources such as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) database. However, the NTSB General Aviation accident reports include limited detail on human factors, specifically pilot actions and conditions. We interviewed pilots about their LOC-I …
Exploring Informal Learning Structures In Airline Operations, Barth Baron Jr., Dorrit Billman, Randall J. Mumaw
Exploring Informal Learning Structures In Airline Operations, Barth Baron Jr., Dorrit Billman, Randall J. Mumaw
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
Airline pilot training is extensive, highly structured, and driven by aircraft and airspace system operating requirements, yet pilots describe a tradition of between-pilot knowledge transfer and self-directed learning. While industry and regulators focus on “formal learning” systems, pilots report relying on this “informal learning” to build operational expertise, suggesting gaps in how successfully formal learning prepares pilots to handle operational complexities. The community that researches learning has extensively studied informal learning, including in a workplace setting, and its characteristics align with how pilots report increasing their skills and knowledge informally. However, no research into informal learning practices among airline pilots …
Resilient Strategies In Commercial Aviation, Michael Stewart, Bryan Matthews
Resilient Strategies In Commercial Aviation, Michael Stewart, Bryan Matthews
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
When we fly and nothing scary happens, is the system’s design affording this success? Not always — sometimes humans are the cause of success. This resilient performance is often overlooked. We explore two types of resilient performance strategies: countermeasures and modifications. countermeasures are behaviors triggered by variables anticipated to be challenging or problematic (i.e., pressures). To capture this, we look at examples of how a problem was avoided. For example, a country road may have a hairpin turn where accidents more frequently occur. With this pressure identified, we look at successful drivers for insights. Modifications are changes that are created …

Nasa Human Factors Red Light/Green Light Analysis: Overview And Spacshiptwo Rl/Gl Case Study, Tracy Dillinger, Isabel Hernandez
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
Historically, learning from accidents and incidents involves identifying errors of commission or omission and “things that go wrong” and how to reduce their recurrence. While well-intentioned, infrequent failures receive more attention than everyday successes. Human Factors analysis need not limit itself to learning from failures. Learning from “what goes right” involves identifying resilience factors associated with behaviors and processes that strengthen the system and reduce risk. This article provides an overview of how the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Human Factors Task Force (HFTF) constructed the NASAHFACS model and the Red Light/Green Light approach. Using SpaceShipTwo as a case …
