Evidence-Based Practice Change Proposal: Implementation Of A Transition To Practice Program For New Registered Nurse Graduates Beginning Practice In An Extended Care Facility, Gwendolyn A. Stevenson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects

The transition to practice (TTP) of new registered nurses has long been a concept of interest within the nursing profession as unsuccessful transition to practice impacts individual nurses, healthcare organizations, the nursing profession, and the quality of patient care. There has been a renewed focus on transition to practice as changes in the healthcare delivery system and nursing profession have highlighted the importance of successful TTP in ensuring quality patient care in all settings. With an increasing geriatric population and healthcare delivery shifting away from acute care settings, greater numbers of new registered nurse graduates are transitioning to practice in …

Muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs (GTOs) are two types of sensory receptors that respond to changes in length or tension of skeletal muscles. These mechanosensors have long been known to participate in both proprioception and stretch reflex. Here, we present recent findings implicating these organs in maintenance of spine alignment as well as in realignment of fractured bones. These discoveries have been made in several mouse lines lacking functional mechanosensors in part or completely. In both studies, the absence of functional spindles and GTOs produced a more severe phenotype than that of spindles alone. Interestingly, the spinal curve phenotype, …

Repetitive Transcranial Electrical Stimulation Induces Quantified Changes In Resting Cerebral Perfusion Measured From Arterial Spin Labeling, Matthew Sherwood, Aaron T. Madaris, Casserly R. Mullenger, R. Andy Mckinley

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

The use of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) as a method to augment neural activity has increased in popularity in the last decade and a half. The specific application of TES to the left prefrontal cortex has been shown to produce broad cognitive effects; however, the neural mechanisms underlying these effects remain unknown. In this work, we evaluated the effect of repetitive TES on cerebral perfusion. Stimulation was applied to the left prefrontal cortex on three consecutive days, and resting cerebral perfusion was quantified before and after stimulation using arterial spin labeling. Perfusion was found to decrease significantly more in a …

Networks Identify Productive Forum Discussions, Adrienne L. Traxler, A. Gavrin, Rebecca Lindell

Physics Faculty Publications

Discussion forums provide a channel for students to engage with peers and course material outside of class, accessible even to commuter and nontraditional populations. Forums can build classroom community and aid learning, but students do not always take up these tools. We use network analysis to compare three semesters of forum logs from an introductory calculus-based physics course. The networks show dense structures of collaboration that differ significantly between semesters, even though aggregate participation statistics remain steady. After characterizing network structure for each semester, we correlate students’ centrality—a numeric measure of network position—with final course grade. Finally, we use a …

Ultraviolet light exposure is the major cause for photodamage. Pathologic effects of UVradiation include precancerous actinic keratosis which can progress into squamous cellcarcinoma. UV exposures commonly encountered include sunlight and indoor tanning bedexposure. Actinic neoplasia (precancerous actinic keratosis and non-melanoma skincancer) are highly prevalent in elderly patients with fair skin, and those with lower immunesystems. The impact on our healthcare system is substantial, as currently the averageannual cost to treat non-melanoma skin cancer is 5 billion dollars [1]. Though often asource of considerable morbidity due to extensive surgical procedures to remove the skincancers in the normal populations, squamous cell carcinomas …

Feature-Based Discretization Of A Turbine Disk For Probabilistic Risk Assessment, Michael Thomas, Jace Carter, Lloyd Matson, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

There is an economic need to extend the useful life of jet engine rotors. Retirement-for-Cause (RFC) is a lifing method that allows for the continued operation of components passed traditional life limits. Under RFC, an extension of damage tolerance, components are deemed safe for a further service interval using non-destructive inspections (NDI) for crack like defe cts. As components are kept in-service beyond their designed service life it is essential that the probability of failure (POF), or risk, of continued service is known. Under current FAA rotor design certification practices the component POF is analyzed using a probabilistic framework focused …

The present work assessed the efficacy of training volitional down-regulation of the primary auditory cortex (A1) based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback (fMRI-NFT). A1 has been shown to be hyperactive in chronic tinnitus patients, and has been implicated as a potential source for the tinnitus percept. 27 healthy volunteers with normal hearing underwent 5 fMRI-NFT sessions: 18 received real neurofeedback and 9 sham neurofeedback. Each session was composed of a simple auditory fMRI followed by 2 runs of A1 fMRI-NFT. The auditory fMRI alternated periods of no auditory with periods of white noise stimulation at 90 dB. A1 …

Structural Transformations In Porous Glasses Under Mechanical Loading. I. Tension, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev Jul 2018

Structural Transformations In Porous Glasses Under Mechanical Loading. I. Tension, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The evolution of porous structure and mechanical properties of binary glasses under tensile loading were examined using molecular dynamics simulations. We consider vitreous systems obtained in the process of phase separation after a rapid isochoric quench of a glass-forming liquid to a temperature below the glass transition. The porous structure in undeformed samples varies from a connected porous network to a random distribution of isolated pores upon increasing average glass density. We find that at small strain, the elastic modulus follows a power-law dependence on the average glass density and the pore size distribution remains nearly the same as in …

Item-Level Gender Fairness In The Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation And The Conceptual Survey Of Electricity And Magnetism, Rachel Henderson, Paul Miller, John Stewart, Adrienne L. Traxler, Rebecca Lindell Jul 2018

Item-Level Gender Fairness In The Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation And The Conceptual Survey Of Electricity And Magnetism, Rachel Henderson, Paul Miller, John Stewart, Adrienne L. Traxler, Rebecca Lindell

Physics Faculty Publications

Gender gaps on the most widely used conceptual inventories created by physics education researchers have been extensively studied. Most of the research exploring the consistent gender gaps has been performed at the student level using the total evaluation score; less research has been performed examining these assessments at the item level and this research has been predominately restricted to the Force Concept Inventory (FCI). Many studies have identified subsets of FCI items as unfair to either men or women. An item is fair if men and women of equal ability in conceptual physics score equally on the item. This study …

The Yielding Transition In Periodically Sheared Binary Glasses At Finite Temperature, Nikolai V. Priezjev Jul 2018

The Yielding Transition In Periodically Sheared Binary Glasses At Finite Temperature, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the dynamic behavior of three-dimensional binary glasses prepared via an instantaneous quench across the glass transition. We found that with increasing strain amplitude up to a critical value, the potential energy approaches lower minima in steady state, whereas the amplitude of shear stress oscillations becomes larger. Below the yielding transition, the storage modulus dominates the mechanical response, and the gradual decay of the potential energy over consecutive cycles is accompanied by reduction in size of transient clusters of atoms with large nonaffine displacements. In contrast, above the yield strain, the loss modulus …

Two photoconductive emitters - one with a self-complementary square spiral antenna, and the other with a resonant slot antenna - were fabricated on a GaAs epilayer embedded with ErAs quantum dots. Driven with 1550 nm mode-locked lasers, ~117 μW broadband THz power was generated from the device with the spiral antenna, and ~1.2 μW from the device with resonant slot antenna. The optical-to-THz conversion is through extrinsic photoconductivity.

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are known for high thermal conductivity and have potential use as nano-radiators or heat exchangers. This paper focuses on the thermal performance of carpet-like arrays of vertically aligned CNTs on solid graphite substrates with the idea of investigating their behavior as a function of carpet dimensions and predicting their performance as thermal interface material (TIM) for electronic device cooling. Vertically aligned CNTs were grown on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate, which creates a robust and durable all-carbon hierarchical structure. The multi-layer thermal analysis approach using Netzsch laser flash analysis system was used to evaluate their performance …

Effect Of Social Media On Marketing And Brand Image: Does It Matter?, Miranda Fryman Apr 2018

Effect Of Social Media On Marketing And Brand Image: Does It Matter?, Miranda Fryman

The University Honors Program

Social media officially emerged in 1997, with the first recognizable site called Six Degrees which allowed users to friend and message one another. Two years later, in 1999, blogs became popular, but no one could have predicted the extent to which social media would grow. In the early 2000’s, sites like Myspace, Facebook, and LinkedIn gained traction with the advancement of technology. At this point, around 100 million users had access to the internet (Hale, 2016) and that number was rapidly growing. With people’s ongoing urge to be constantly connected, social media continued to flourish, and sites like Twitter, Youtube, …

In Situ Defect Detection Using Three Color Spectroscopy In Laser Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing, Andrew Drieling Apr 2018

In Situ Defect Detection Using Three Color Spectroscopy In Laser Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing, Andrew Drieling

The University Honors Program

Additive Manufacturing (AM) provides a way to create parts that would be extremely difficult or impossible with conventional manufacturing processes. However, AM also introduces defects, which are detrimental to the mechanical performance. These defects are potentially unknown until post-processing inspection and testing, wasting time and resources on an unusable part or initiating unexpected failure. Historically, spectroscopy has successfully been used for in situ monitoring of laser welding, using changing parameters in the generated plume to predict defects. In situ monitoring using a visible spectrometer for fabrication of Alloy 718 on a test bed laser powder bed fusion system is performed. …

Modeling And Visualization Of Uncertainty-Aware Geometries Using Multi-Variate Normal Distributions, Christina Gillman, Thomas Wischgoll, Bernd Hamann, James Ahrens

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Many applications are dealing with geometric data that are affected by uncertainty. It is important to analyze, visualize, and understand the properties of uncertain geometry. We present a methodology to model uncertain geometry based on multi-variate normal distributions. In addition, we propose a visualization technique to represent a hull for uncertain geometry capturing a user-defined percentage of the underlying uncertain geometry. To show the effectiveness of our approach, we have modeled and visualized uncertain datasets from different applications.
