We present a new approach to integrating deep learning with knowledge-based systems that we believe shows promise. Our approach seeks to emulate reasoning structure, which can be inspected part-way through, rather than simply learning reasoner answers, which is typical in many of the black-box systems currently in use. We demonstrate that this idea is feasible by training a long short-term memory (LSTM) artificial neural network to learn εℒ+ reasoning patterns with two different data sets. We also show that this trained system is resistant to noise by corrupting a percentage of the test data and comparing the reasoner’s and LSTM’s …

Implementing Peer Instruction In Medical Education And The Impact On Student Success, Alexander Chase Jan 2020

Implementing Peer Instruction In Medical Education And The Impact On Student Success, Alexander Chase

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

In 1991, a physicist at Harvard University, Dr. Eric Mazur, implemented a new style of classroom learning into his introductory physics courses named Peer Instruction.1 The objective of Peer Instruction (PI) was to engage students in interactive discussion throughout the time spent in the classroom. In the PI format, students were assigned reading that was then tested at the start of each class through a reading quiz. Dr. Mazur then spent the remainder of class quizzing his students with questions that were designed to highlight the important aspects of the material in question. All students were required to participate by …

Improving Pain Management In Patients With Sickle Cell Disease Using Machine Learning Techniques, Fan Yang Jan 2020

Improving Pain Management In Patients With Sickle Cell Disease Using Machine Learning Techniques, Fan Yang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited red blood cell disorder that can cause a multitude of complications throughout a patient's life. Pain is the most common complication and a significant cause of morbidity. Since pain is a highly subjective experience, both medical providers and patients express difficulty in determining ideal treatment and management strategies for pain. Therefore, the development of objective pain assessment and pain forecasting methods is critical to pain management in SCD. On the other hand, the rapidly increasing use of mobile health (mHealth) technology and wearable devices gives the ability to build a remote health intervention …

This thesis presents the design, the implementation, and the evaluation of a database-oriented static program analysis engine for the PHP programming language. This engine analyzes PHP programs by representing their semantics using a graph-based data structure, which will be subsequently stored into a graph database. Such scheme will fundamentally facilitate various program analysis tasks such as static taint analysis, visualization, and data mining. Specifically, these complex program analysis tasks can now be translated into built-in declarative graph database operations with rich features. Our engine fundamentally differs from other existing static program analysis systems that mainly leverage intermediate representation (IRs) to …

Investigating Heterogeneous Nucleation Of Barite Using Hydrothermal Atomic Force Microscopy And Optical Microscopy, Ankita B. Gurav

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In order to develop a better understanding heterogeneous nucleation of barite, barite precipitation was studied under varying experimental parameters. Hydrothermal atomic force microscopy (HAFM) and optical microscopy were used to investigate the effect of change in temperature, supersaturation and varying ratios of ions on heterogeneous nucleation of barite. In the experiments conducted at higher temperatures, the particles thus nucleated were found to display characteristic hexagonal and rhomboidal shapes. In comparing results of particle densities among different ion ratios, there is evidence suggesting that barium to sulfate ratio plays a role of promoter. Wherein, the ratios with higher [Ba2+] concentration were …

Logistic Function Based Nonlinear Modeling And Circuit Analysis Of The Bipolar Vacancy Migration Memristor, Isaac P. Abraham Jan 2020

Logistic Function Based Nonlinear Modeling And Circuit Analysis Of The Bipolar Vacancy Migration Memristor, Isaac P. Abraham

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Memristor is an acronym for memory resistor. Memristors promise to be building blocks for high density memory and analog computation. Hewlett Packard’s announcement in 2008 of having fabricated a memristor on an integrated circuit scale has created a tangible excitement in this field. Understanding and exploiting the full potential of these devices requires good compact models. Symbolic modeling provides a balance between achieving accurate empirical fit and generating closed form expressions. This dissertation simplifies the transport equation into a variable coefficient advection equation, very similar to a Burgers’ equation traditionally used in fluid dynamics. The Burgers’-like model reveals the dual …

Joint Shelf Design And Shelf Space Allocation Problem For Retailers, Hakan Gecili Jan 2020

Joint Shelf Design And Shelf Space Allocation Problem For Retailers, Hakan Gecili

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Although the retail business has been exploring innovative ways to engage shoppers, the COVID-19 pandemic has sped up their effort. Because of its unique benefits, physical stores will continue to remain an integral part of the overall retail business. However, to stay competitive, retailers will be forced to effectively utilize their available space in physical store (and even reduce it if need be), while offering a reasonably large assortment of products on their shelves. For many such retailers, the design of planograms – visual representation of products on shelves – is still driven by prior experience and intuition. Further, existing …

Evolution Of Electron Properties After Nanosecond Repetitively Pulsed Discharges In Air Measured By Thomson Scattering, Chase S. Murray

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This work was an investigation of nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges in air by measuring the evolution of electron density and electron temperature between pulses using Thomson scattering of laser light. Bursts of repetitive pulses within several microseconds after the initial pulse were found to exhibit a coupling effect and create an even higher electron density than the initial pulse. The wide range of temperatures and densities of the electrons existing between pulses allow an opportunity to explore both the collective and non-collective regimes of Thomson scattering. By measuring electron density and temperature at a variety of times, an accurate description …

Community Structure Has Greater Effect On Water Column Ammonium Cycling Than Nutrients And Temperature In Shallow Lake Mesocosms, Shannon Marie Collins

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) impact lakes worldwide and are caused by excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loading from watersheds. Climate warming and nutrient loading effects on N cycling were examined in shallow lake mesocosms in Denmark. N loading to some mesocosms ceased in June 2018 and resumed in June 2019. Ammonium (NH4+) uptake, regeneration, and nitrification and nitrate uptake rates were evaluated. High nutrient, ambient temperature mesocosms exhibited the highest NH4+ cycling rates. Before resumption of N loading in high nutrient mesocosms, NH4+ regeneration supported 46 % of potential microbial NH4+ demand, versus 24 % with N loading. Nutrient …

Recent advances in location acquisition services have resulted in vast amounts of trajectory data; providing valuable insight into human mobility. The field of trajectory data mining has exploded as a result, with literature detailing algorithms for (pre)processing, map matching, pattern mining, and the like. Unfortunately, obtaining trajectory data for the design and evaluation of such algorithms is problematic due to privacy, ethical, dataset size, researcher access, and sampling frequency concerns. Synthetic trajectories provide a solution to such a problem as they are cheap to produce and are derived from a fully controllable generation procedure. Citing deficiencies in modern synthetic trajectory …

Understanding how a system component can interact with other services can take an immeasurable amount of time. Reverse engineering embedded and large systems can rely on understanding how components interact with one another. This process is time consuming and can sometimes be generalized through certain behavior. We will be explaining two such complicated systems and highlighting similarities between them. We will show that through static analysis you can capture compiler behavior and apply it to the understanding of a function, reducing the total time required to understand a component of whichever system you are learning.

Humans spend almost a third of their lives asleep. Sleep has a pivotal effect on job performance, memory, fatigue recovery, and both mental and physical health. Sleep quality (SQ) is a subjective experience and reported via patients’ self-reports. Predicting subjective SQ based on objective measurements can enhance diagnosis and treatment of SQ defects, especially in older adults who are subject to poor SQ. In this dissertation, we assessed enhancement of subjective SQ prediction using an easy-to-use E4 wearable device, machine learning techniques and identifying disease-specific risk factors of abnormal SQ in older adults. First, we designed a clinical decision support …

Optical imaging has demonstrated potential as a medical imaging modality for measuring tissue functionality. Recently, interest in fluorescence guided surgery has emerged from improvements in optical imaging that have allowed real-time feedback. Of the optical imaging modalities, spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) has gained a lot of interest. Unlike spectroscopic techniques, such as functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and frequency domain spectroscopy that measure bulk tissue properties, SFDI quantifies tissue functionality locally and wide field making it practical for clinical applications. Unfortunately, traditional SFDI systems use multi-pixel detectors, which may not exhibit ideal spectral characteristics, have limited sensitivity, be expensive, …

In this paper, the intersections of deleted digits Cantor sets and their fractal dimensions were analyzed. Previously, it had been shown that for any dimension between 0 and the dimension of the given deleted digits Cantor set of the real number line, a translate of the set could be constructed such that the intersection of the set with the translate would have this dimension. Here, we consider deleted digits Cantor sets of the complex plane with Gaussian integer bases and show that the result still holds.

In the last decade, the advent of social media and microblogging services have inevitably changed our world. These services produce vast amounts of streaming data, and one of the most important ways of analyzing and discovering interesting trends in the streaming data is through clustering. In clustering streaming data, it is desirable to perform a single pass over incoming data, such that we do not need to process old data again, and the clustering model should evolve over time not to lose any important feature statistics of the data. In this research, we have developed a new clustering system that …
