Nexus Literary Journal
Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.
Performance Evaluation Of A Computational Model Of En Route Air Traffic Control, Todd J. Callantine
Performance Evaluation Of A Computational Model Of En Route Air Traffic Control, Todd J. Callantine
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005
This paper describes a model of en route air traffic control and presents the results of a performance evaluation of computational air traffic controller agents based on the model. The purpose is to better understand the representations, heuristics, and processes that expert air traffic controllers use and develop agents useful for air traffic management concept development and safety/risk analysis. The results show the agents control low-tomedium traffic levels effectively. The research was supported by the NASA Aviation System Capacity Program and the FAA/NASA Aviation Safety Program.
Study On The Integration Of Human Performance And Accident Risk Assessment Models: Air-Midas & Topaz, Kevin Corker
Study On The Integration Of Human Performance And Accident Risk Assessment Models: Air-Midas & Topaz, Kevin Corker
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005
A computational model of human performance (Air Man-machine Integration Design and Analysis System, Air MIDAS) and an accident risk assessment methodology (Traffic Organization and Perturbation AnalyZer, TOPAZ) were integrated in order to learn about the similarities and differences of their models, to demonstrate the feasibility of such integration, and the integration impact on accident risk assessment.
General Aviation Vfr-Into-Imc: Z-Score Filtering Of Demographic And Personality Variables, And The Personality Paradox, William Knecht
General Aviation Vfr-Into-Imc: Z-Score Filtering Of Demographic And Personality Variables, And The Personality Paradox, William Knecht
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005
Does pilot personality affect risk-taking with weather? Armchair logic says “Yes,” while data often say “No.” In this work, we apply the technique of z-score filtering (slice analysis) to pilot takeoff decisions made in the face of simulated adverse weather seen at taxiway level. Such a filtering technique might prove useful, provided emphasis is kept to maintain experiment-wise reliability. Statistical and methodological problems with personality data are discussed. The results of this particular data set showed a strong effect of weather on takeoffs, as measured by visibility, cloud ceiling, and the interaction of the two. But, despite best efforts, no …

Transfer Between Training Of Part-Tasks In Complex Skill Training – Model Development And Experiment, Jan Joris Roessingh, Astrid M.L. Kappers, Jan J. Koenderink
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005
One of the most common instruction-strategies for training complex skills is part-training. In this paper a model is developed for the optimisation of schedules for part-training, the ‘optimal transfer model’. This model is based on individual learning, but may be generalised to groups of trainees. It is based on the idea that if there is functional skill transfer from part-training to whole-task performance, then there must be a training schedule that yields optimal results. In this context, an optimal training schedule is one in which part-training lasts as long as is necessary to ensure the best possible performance with the …
Human Performance Modelling For Accident Risk Assessment Of Active Runway Crossing Operation, Sybert H. Stroeve, Henk A.P. Blom
Human Performance Modelling For Accident Risk Assessment Of Active Runway Crossing Operation, Sybert H. Stroeve, Henk A.P. Blom
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005
A human performance modelling approach is presented for risk assessment of operations with multiple, dynamically interacting agents. The approach is illustrated for a risk model of runway incursion on an active departure runway. This model-based approach can provide detailed, systematically derived results on risk contributions of human operators and technical systems in complex multi-agent environments.

Organizational Factors In Commercial Aviation Accidents 1990-2000, Terry L. Von Thaden, Douglas A. Wiegmann, Scott A. Shappell
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005
Recently several major transportation accidents have brought significant attention to the role of organizational factors in supporting safety within high-risk critical systems. However, little is essentially known about the types of organizational factors that contribute to these accidents, as there has yet to be a comprehensive analysis of these factors. This paper elaborates on the types of organizational factors that have contributed to pilot-error related aviation accidents in U.S. commercial aviation. Specifically, we analyzed 60 accidents with organizational cause factors from 1990-2000. Results from this analysis indicate that the type and frequency of organizational factors that contribute to accidents varies …
A Real-Time Automated Transcription Tool For Tactical Communications Assessment, David T. Williamson, Lt Mathew D. Purtee
A Real-Time Automated Transcription Tool For Tactical Communications Assessment, David T. Williamson, Lt Mathew D. Purtee
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005
This paper describes the development of a real-time automated transcription tool for assessing tactical communications in a DIS environment. Java-based tools were developed to capture simulated radio communications data from tactical training exercises conducted at the Warfighter Training Research Division of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Human Effectiveness Directorate. A representative set of audio data was handtranscribed and used as training material for a class-based statistical language model using a commercially available speech recognition system. The language model was designed to allow run-time input of callsign data to provide increased flexibility. The resulting system is a real-time automated speech-to-text transcription …
A Random Rotation Perturbation Approach To Privacy Preserving Data Classification, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
A Random Rotation Perturbation Approach To Privacy Preserving Data Classification, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
Kno.e.sis Publications
This paper presents a random rotation perturbation approach for privacy preserving data classification. Concretely, we identify the importance of classification-specific information with respect to the loss of information factor, and present a random rotation perturbation framework for privacy preserving data classification. Our approach has two unique characteristics. First, we identify that many classification models utilize the geometric properties of datasets, which can be preserved by geometric rotation. We prove that the three types of classifiers will deliver the same performance over the rotation perturbed dataset as over the original dataset. Second, we propose a multi-column privacy model to address the …

Web services are the new paradigm for distributed computing. They have much to offer towards interoperability of applications and integration of large scale distributed systems. To make Web services accessible to users, service providers use Web service registries to publish them. Current infrastructure of registries requires replication of all Web service publications in all Universal Business Registries. Large growth in number of Web services as well as the growth in the number of registries would make this replication impractical. In addition, the current Web service discovery mechanism is inefficient, as it does not support discovery based on the capabilities of …

Web services have primarily been designed for providing inter-operability between business applications. Current technologies assume a large amount of human interaction, for integrating two applications. This is primarily due to the fact that business process integration requires understanding of data and functions of the involved entities. Semantic Web technologies, powered by description logic based languages like OWL[1], aim to add greater meaning to Web content, by annotating the data with ontologies. Ontologies provide a mechanism of providing shared conceptualizations of domains. This allows agents to get an understanding of users’ Web content and greatly reduces human interaction for meaningful Web …

Level Mapping Characterizations Of Selector-Generated Models For Logic Programs, Sibylle Schwarz, Pascal Hitzler
Level Mapping Characterizations Of Selector-Generated Models For Logic Programs, Sibylle Schwarz, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Assigning semantics to logic programs via selector generated models (Schwarz 2002/2003) extends several semantics, like the stable, the inflationary, and the stable generated semantics, to programs with arbitrary formulae in rule heads and bodies. We study this approach by means of a unifying framework for characterizing different logic programming semantics using level mappings (Hitzler and Wendt 200x, Hitzler 2003), thereby supporting the claim that this framework is very flexible and applicable to very diversely defined semantics.

A Student-Centered Project For Earth System History, Rebecca Teed
Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications
This project is intended to replace some of the lectures that would ordinarily be necessary in a survey of Earth history over geologic time. The students will be taking the lecturer's place in front of the class, presenting some of the material to their colleagues. Students will work in groups on a single era or period. Each student role-plays an expert (such as an oceanographer) and works with teammates playing other sorts of experts (a biologist, a geologist, an atmospheric scientist). Their presentation will require them to do research. They will be constructing resource lists to keep track of how …

To gain momentum, technologies for building private semantic Webs or parts of the World Wide semantic Web must become a commodity and easy to integrate. To determine just how far semantic Web technologies have come, we wanted to create a snapshot of what you could do by applying and assembling existing semantic Web technologies - in one day.

In the past few years, the W3C has been establishing standards for the fundamental building blocks of the Semantic Web. With RDF a common data model has been provided. A major step was the introduction of the ontology definition languages RDFS—offering very basic semantics—and the Web Ontology Language OWL As these standards are still very new, only a limited support of tools for inferencing and querying exists. Still, the availability of such tools will be crucial for the development of the Semantic Web.

Construction of domain ontologies on the semantic web is a human and resource intensive process, efforts to reduce which are crucial for the Semantic Web to scale. We present a framework for automated taxonomy construction, that involves: (a) generation of a cluster hierarchy from a document corpus using statistical clustering and NLP techniques; (b) extraction of a topic hierarchy from this cluster hierarchy; and (c) assignment of labels to nodes in the topic hierarchy. Metrics for estimating topic hierarchy quality and parameters of an experimentation framework are identified. MEDLINE was the document corpus and MeSH thesaurus was the gold standard.

Industry and academia are both focusing their attention on information retrieval over semantic metadata extracted from the Web, and it is increasingly possible to analyze such metadata to discover interesting relationships. However, just as document ranking is a critical component in today's search engines, the ranking of complex relationships would be an important component in tomorrow's semantic Web engines. This article presents a flexible ranking approach to identify interesting and relevant relationships in the semantic Web. The authors demonstrate the scheme's effectiveness through an empirical evaluation over a real-world data set.

We present a variational Bayesian framework for performing inference, density estimation and model selection in a special class of graphical models—Hidden Markov Random Fields (HMRFs). HMRFs are particularly well suited to image modelling and in this paper, we apply them to the problem of image segmentation. Unfortunately, HMRFs are notoriously hard to train and use because the exact inference problems they create are intractable. Our main contribution is to introduce an efficient variational approach for performing approximate inference of the Bayesian formulation of HMRFs, which we can then apply to the density estimation and model selection problems that arise when …

Web services have the potential to revolutionize e-commerce by enabling businesses to interact with each other on the fly. To date, however, Web processes using Web services have been created mostly at the syntactic level. Current composition standards focus on building processes based on the interface description of the participating services. This rigid approach, with its strong coupling between the process and the interface of the participating services, does not allow businesses to dynamically change partners and services. As shown in this article, Web process composition techniques can be enhanced by using semantic process templates to capture the semantic requirements …

Semantics is seen as the key ingredient in the next phase of the Web infrastructure as well as the next generation of enterprise content management. Ontology is the centerpiece of the most prevalent semantic technologies and provides the basis of representing, acquiring, and utilizing knowledge. With the availability of several commercial products and many research tools, specifications and increasing adoption of Semantic Web standards such as RDF for metadata and OWL for ontology representation, ontology-driven techniques and systems have already enabled a new generation of industry strength semantic applications. In particular, Semagix's Freedom has powered applications in leading verticals such …
