Education about implicit bias in clinical settings is essential for improving the quality of healthcare for underrepresented groups. Such a learning experience can be delivered in the form of a serious game simulation. WrightLIFE (Lifelike Immersion for Equity) is a project that combines two serious game simulations, with each addressing the group that faces implicit bias. These groups are individuals that identify as LGBTQIA+ and people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The project presents healthcare providers with a training tool that puts them in the roles of the patient and a medical specialist and immerses them in social and clinical …

Surface-based lattice structures such as triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices are lightweight structures that are widely being investigated for applications in automotive, aerospace, military, railway, and naval structures. Due to the recent advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing (3DP) technologies, architected cellular materials such as surface- or strut-based periodic lattice cell structures have emerged as a unique class of lightweight metamaterials. These materials possess enhanced strength to weight ratio, high stiffness, exceptional capabilities in reducing noise and vibration, insulating heat, and effective impact energy absorption. Understanding the impact behavior of such materials are important so that they can be reliably …

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term for a group of diagnoses that result from exposure to alcohol in utero. Alcohol creates a spectrum of impacts on the developing brain, contributing to lifelong physical, cognitive and behavioral implications. The prevalence of children with FASD in the foster care system is approximately 60 per 1000 children (Lange et al., 2013). Prevalence rates are underestimated due to children not being diagnosed or receiving an alternative diagnosis. This relates to various emotional, behavioral, social, and cognitive struggles for children and their families. To best serve this population and their families, it …

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder that is characterized by severe and progressive muscle wasting (Venugopal & Pavlakis, 2021). This disease is caused by a mutation in the largest known human gene which encodes the protein, dystrophin (Gao & McNally, 2015). Dystrophin connects the inner cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix and is critical for maintaining the structural stability of muscle cells during contraction (Venugopal & Pavlakis, 2021). Mutations to the dystrophin gene result in myocyte membrane instability, contributing to the structural deterioration of the muscle tissue (Venugopal & Pavlakis, 2021). Progressive muscle degeneration and the replacement of …

With the advent of nanotechnology, the potential applications of nanoscale gold in medicine have expanded substantially. Gold’s therapeutic and toxic properties have been widely studied; however, little is known regarding gold’s contribution to oxidative stress in red blood cells (RBCs). This is especially true for recently designed large (L) gold nanorods (GNRs), which possess unmatched theranostic capabilities. Here, we report on the effect of LGNRs at the level of cellular function, and particularly on ion transport and the glutathione (GSH) concentration in human (H) RBCs. Gold has been hypothesized to effectively react with RBCs sulfhydryl groups, thereby causing depletion of …

The technical document is an entity that consists of several essential and interconnected parts, often referred to as modalities. Despite the extensive attention that certain parts have already received, per say the textual information, there are several aspects that severely under researched. Two such modalities are the utility of diagram images and the deep automated understanding of mathematical formulas. Inspired by existing holistic approaches to the deep understanding of technical documents, we develop a novel formal scheme for the modelling of digital diagram images. This extends to a generative framework that allows for the creation of artificial images and their …
Mixed-Effects Regression Models For Analyzing Data With Excess Zeros, Guangyu Xu
Mixed-Effects Regression Models For Analyzing Data With Excess Zeros, Guangyu Xu
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Data with excess zeros are common in many applications. Failure to account for the extra zeros may lead to biased estimates and misleading inference when analyzing this data type. To investigate the association between a set of predictor variables and an outcome variable with excess zeros, two kinds of regression models, the hurdle model and the zero-inflated model, are commonly used. In these models, the traditional tests, such as the likelihood-ratio test and the Wald test, can only be used to detect the fixed effects in association analysis. Recently, several random-effects or mixed-effects tests have been proposed for association analysis, …

In this work, a spectrophotometric titration of methylthymol blue (MTB) with barium chloride was performed at pH = 7.5, 9.6, and 12.2 to determine the stoichiometry of complexation between the two as well as formation constants and absorptivity coefficients. Complexes of 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 Ba:MTB were suggested by the experimental data upon fitting with appropriate models using Beer’s Law. The molar absorptivities of free MTB species at 605 nm were determined to be 24− = 5.0 (± 0.2) x 103 L·mol-1·cm-1, 5− = 7.3 (± 0.3) x 103 L·mol-1·cm-1, 6− = 1.3 (± 0.2) x 104 L·mol-1·cm-1. Counterfeit pharmaceuticals are a serious threat to public safety worldwide. Adverse health effects including resistance to treatment and death have resulted from the consumption of such medicines. Aspirin, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been counterfeited in the past due to its increasing demand. Rapid and easy analytical methods are needed to detect these counterfeit medicines and put a halt to the growing number of such incidents. In this study, quantitative estimation of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content in different over-the-counter available aspirin tablets was done using titrimetry and UV- Visible spectrophotometry. Qualitative analysis was done using Raman spectroscopy. …

Constitutively active oncogenic mutant K-Ras is one the principal contributors to human cancers including 90% of pancreatic, 50% of colorectal and 32% of non-small cell lung cancers. However, except for K-Ras G12C oncogenic mutant, which only presents in about 13% of non-small cell lung cancer patients, there is no anti-K-Ras therapy for a considerable subset of K-Ras mutations in human tumors, reflecting challenges for targeting oncogenic K-Ras activity. K-Ras is a membrane-bound small GTPase; when active, it triggers multiple signaling pathways regulating a variety of key cellular functions such as cell growth, proliferation and survival. To initiate these signaling cascades, …

Low acceptance of evolution remains an obstacle to quality biology instruction. We develop and utilize a novel assessment which measures emotional experience in light of real-world evolution education scenarios. We presented 296 science teachers 4 pro-evolution and 8 anti-evolution scenarios and asked them to rate their levels of joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust, shame, and guilt elicited by that scenario on an ordinal 5-point scale. We used exploratory factor analysis to extract the most important dimensions in the teachers’ responses, Rasch analysis to explore the validity of the extracted subscales, and stepwise regression to find the most important factors driving …

Physical and biogeochemical heterogeneity dramatically impacts fluid flow and reactive solute transport behaviors in geological formations across scales. From micro pores to regional reservoirs, upscaling has been proven to be a valid approach to estimate large-scale parameters by using data measured at small scales. Upscaling has considerable practical importance in oil and gas production, energy storage, carbon geologic sequestration, contamination remediation, and nuclear waste disposal. This review covers, in a comprehensive manner, the upscaling approaches available in the literature and their applications on various processes, such as advection, dispersion, matrix diffusion, sorption, and chemical reactions. We enclose newly developed approaches …

Experimental Measurement Of Sharp Thz Absorption Signatures From Nucleic Acid Solutions In Nanofluidic Channels, Elliott R. Brown, Edgar A. Mendoza
Physics Faculty Publications
We report on the room-temperature experimental measurement of THz absorption signatures in aqueous, double-stranded nucleic acid solutions confined to the submicron silica channels on fused quartz substrates using THz frequency-domain (photomixing) spectroscopy. Three sharp (i.e., strong and narrow) signatures, ~10–20 GHz FWHM, are observed in the shortest base pair sample—small interfering, double-stranded (ds) RNA—in the range of 800 GHz to 1.1 THz. Three similar signatures are also observed in a 50-bp dsDNA ladder sample. For a 1-kbp dsDNA ladder sample, the three are still evident, but are broadened and weakened. For a 48.5-kbp sample (λ-DNA), no prominent signatures are observed, …

Trackers for activity and physical fitness have become ubiquitous. Although recent work has demonstrated significant relationships between mental effort and physiological data such as skin temperature, heart rate, and electrodermal activity, we have yet to demonstrate their efficacy for the forecasting of mental effort such that a useful mental effort tracker can be developed. Given prior difficulty in extracting relationships between mental effort and physiological responses that are repeatable across individuals, we make the case that fusing self-report measures with physiological data within an internet or smartphone application may provide an effective method for training a useful mental effort tracking …

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used for relieving pain and inflammation accompanying numerous disease states. The primary therapeutic mechanism of these widely used drugs is the inhibition of cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 (COX1, 2) enzymes that catalyze the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. At higher doses, NSAIDs are used for prevention of certain types of cancer and as experimental treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. In the immune system, various NSAIDs have been reported to influence neutrophil function and lymphocyte proliferation, and affect ion channels and cellular calcium homeostasis. Transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) cation channels are highly expressed in …

Climate Change Is Driving Greening Trend Whereas Tree Cover Is Declining In The Western Himalaya Of Pakistan, Arshad Mahmood Khan, Nadia Khalid
Journal of Bioresource Management
Recent studies suggest that two factors including climate change (especially precipitation) and human land use management (HLUM) are primarily driving greening trend around the world. However, studies targeting the impact of both factors on different vegetation layers (i.e. herbs, shrubs and tree layers) are lacking. This study hypothesize that precipitation relatively influence the under-storey vegetation cover more quickly, and HLUM (say afforestation/reforestation, deforestation) is more important towards top-storey layer. To investigate this, 13 randomly selected permanent stations in the wild natural west Himalayan coniferous forests of Sudhan Gali, Pakistan were explored from 2000-2016 to collect vegetation health data by two …

Unrestricted file upload vulnerabilities enable attackers to upload malicious scripts to a web server for later execution. We have built a system, namely UFuzzer, to effectively and automatically detect such vulnerabilities in PHP-based server-side web programs. Different from existing detection methods that use either static program analysis or fuzzing, UFuzzer integrates both (i.e., static-fuzzing co-analysis). Specifically, it leverages static program analysis to generate executable code templates that compactly and effectively summarize the vulnerability-relevant semantics of a server-side web application. UFuzzer then “fuzzes” these templates in a local, native PHP runtime environment for vulnerability detection. Compared to static-analysis-based methods, UFuzzer preserves …

An electroluminescence (EL) phenomenon in unipolar-doped GaN/AlN/GaN double-barrier heterostructures—without any p-type contacts—was investigated from 4.2 K to 300 K. In the range of 200–300 K, the extracted peak photon energies agree with the Monemar formula. In the range of 30 to 200 K, the photon energies are consistent with A-exciton emission. At 4.2 K, the exciton type likely transforms into B-exciton. These studies confirm that the EL emission comes from a cross-bandgap (or band-to-band) electron-hole radiative recombination and is excitonic. The excitons are formed by the holes generated through interband tunneling and the electrons injected into the GaN emitter region …
