Inclusive Education In India, Kumar Sanjeev Ph.D., Khagendra Kumar Ph.D. Jan 2007

Inclusive Education In India, Kumar Sanjeev Ph.D., Khagendra Kumar Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

India is one of the few countries world over where the education of children with special needs doesn’t fall within the purview of human resource development ministry. It is generally the burden of the omnibus ministry of social justice and empowerment, the prime focus of which is rehabilitation, not education. In fact, till today it does not have education as part of its agenda and the issue of education of children with disabilities remains imperceptible, hidden from the public domain, a private problem for families and NGOs to deal with. It’s time that governmental agencies as well as mainstream institutions …

Semantically Annotating A Web Service, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2007

Semantically Annotating A Web Service, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

In the past few years, service-oriented architecture (SOA) has transitioned from a partially formed vision into a widely implemented paradigm, with Web services (WS) being the forerunners to implementing SOA-based solutions. But even though the current trend is to use Web services' standards-based nature to establish static connections between various components, businesses are starting to explore dynamic value-added propositions, such as reuse, interoperability, and agility.

Role Of Semantics In Autonomic & Adaptive Web Services And Processes, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2007

Role Of Semantics In Autonomic & Adaptive Web Services And Processes, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The emergence of Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) has created a new paradigm of loosely coupled distributed systems. In the METEOR-S project, we have studied the comprehensive role of semantics in all stages of the life cycle of service and process-- including annotation, publication, discovery, interoperability/data mediation, and composition. In 2002-2003, we had offered a broad framework of semantics consisting of four types:1) Data semantics, 2) Functional semantics, 3) Non-Functional semantics and 4) Execution semantics. This talk describes the need for the four types of semantics, its standards-based support through WSDL-S/SAWSDL, and the need for such semantic representation to dynamic and …

Learning To Model Spatial Dependency: Semi-Supervised Discriminative Random Fields, Chi-Hoon Lee, Shaojun Wang, Feng Jiao, Dale Schuurmans, Russell Greiner Jan 2007

Learning To Model Spatial Dependency: Semi-Supervised Discriminative Random Fields, Chi-Hoon Lee, Shaojun Wang, Feng Jiao, Dale Schuurmans, Russell Greiner

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present a novel, semi-supervised approach to training discriminative random fields (DRFs) that efficiently exploits labeled and unlabeled training data to achieve improved accuracy in a variety of image processing tasks. We formulate DRF training as a form of MAP estimation that combines conditional loglikelihood on labeled data, given a data-dependent prior, with a conditional entropy regularizer defined on unlabeled data. Although the training objective is no longer concave, we develop an efficient local optimization procedure that produces classifiers that are more accurate than ones based on standard supervised DRF training. We then apply our semi-supervised approach to train DRFs …

Beyond Sawsdl - A Game Plan For Broader Adoption Of Semantic Web Services, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2007

Beyond Sawsdl - A Game Plan For Broader Adoption Of Semantic Web Services, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

After a flurry of research activities led by the OWL-S, WSMO, SWSF, and WSDL-S groups, we now have taken the first concrete steps toward building a Semantic Web Services (SWS) based solution, in the form of a W3C candidate recommendation SAWSDL [http://www.w3.org/2002/ws/sawsdl/], associated tools and use cases, and initial applications [1]. Where do we go from here? Researchers among us may be fully convinced of the importance and benefit of adding semantics to Web services and impatient to see their research translated into technologies and adapted for real use. However, I believe we may need to be patient and do …

A Unified Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan Jan 2007

A Unified Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Semantic Web seems to be evolving into a property-linked web of RDF data, conceptually divorced from (but physically housed in) the hyperlinked web of HTML documents. We discuss the Unified Web model that integrates the two webs and formalizes the structure and the semantics of interconnections between them. We also discuss the Hybrid Query Language which combines the Data and Information Retrieval techniques to provide a convenient and uniform way to retrieve data and documents from the Unified Web. We present the retrieval system SITAR and some preliminary results.

Effects Of Message Complexity And Message Length On The Production Of Pilot Readback Errors, O. Veronika Prinzo Ph.D. Jan 2007

Effects Of Message Complexity And Message Length On The Production Of Pilot Readback Errors, O. Veronika Prinzo Ph.D.

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007

Field data and laboratory studies conducted in the 1990s reported that the rate of pilot readback errors and communication problems increased as controller transmissions became more complex. This resulted in the recommendation that controllers send shorter messages to reduce the memory load imposed on pilots by complex messages. More than 10 years have passed since a comprehensive analysis quantified the types and frequency of readback errors and communication problems that occur in the operational environment. Hence, a content analysis was performed on 52 hours of pilot and controller messages that were transmitted from 5 of the busiest terminal radar approach …

Changes In Preservice Teachers' Observations Of Middle Georgia Schools And Teacher Practice In The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities From 1998 To 2006, Karen K. Brooks Ph.D. Jan 2007

Changes In Preservice Teachers' Observations Of Middle Georgia Schools And Teacher Practice In The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities From 1998 To 2006, Karen K. Brooks Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

This mixed method study found that teachers’ attitudes toward inclusion practices in the middle Georgia area in the past six years have become more inclusive. The study also showed that teachers’ attitudes about inclusion varied from elementary, middle and high schools; and those teachers’ attitudes do affect the implementation of inclusion. The participants were preservice teachers in elementary, middle, high school and special education classrooms. They completed a questionnaire to evaluate their field placements by rating their experiences and noting their observations of inclusive education in local schools where they were required to volunteer 20 hours weekly for about six …

Porosity And Permeability Of Bimodal Sediment Mixtures Using Natural Sediment, Peter M. Phillips Jan 2007

Porosity And Permeability Of Bimodal Sediment Mixtures Using Natural Sediment, Peter M. Phillips

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Porosity and permeability are parameters that affect the flow of ground water in the subsurface and have significant implications on the modeling of fate and transport of contaminants. However, little has been done to quantitatively examine the effect on porosity and permeability of packing in bimodal mixtures of natural sediment. This study compares measurements of porosity and permeability on model bimodal sediment mixtures with predictions from petrophysical models. The main goal is to evaluate how well these petrophysical models predict porosity and permeability in bimodal mixtures of natural sediment. The effect of the volume fraction of fines on porosity and …

An Analog Evolvable Hardware Device For Active Control, Saranyan A. Vigraham Jan 2007

An Analog Evolvable Hardware Device For Active Control, Saranyan A. Vigraham

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The field of Evolvable Hardware (EH) has recently gained a lot of interest due to the novel methodology it offers for designing electrical circuits and machines. EH techniques involve configuring a reconfigurable hardware platform with the aid of learning engines such as evolutionary algorithms. The EH devices normally act as closed loop controllers with the capability of learning necessary control laws adaptively. Current EH practices have several shortcomings, which have restricted their use as reliable controllers. This dissertation will present an improved EH device based on behavioral reconfigurability that addresses the current open challenges in the field of analog Evolvable …

A Comparison Of Graphical Methods For Assessing The Proportional Hazards Assumptions In The Cox Model, Inger Persson, Harry J. Khamis Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Graphical Methods For Assessing The Proportional Hazards Assumptions In The Cox Model, Inger Persson, Harry J. Khamis

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Six graphical procedures to check the assumption of proportional hazards for the Cox model are described and compared. A new way of comparing the graphical procedures using a Kolmogorov-Smirnov like maximum deviation criterion for rejection is derived for each procedure. The procedures are evaluated in a simulation study under proportional hazards and five different forms of nonproportional hazards: (1) increasing hazards, (2) decreasing hazards, (3) crossing hazards, (4) diverging hazards, and (5) nonmonotonic hazards. The procedures are compared in the two-sample case corresponding to two groups with different hazard functions. None of the procedures under consideration require partitioning of the …

Sa-Rest: Semantically Interoperable And Easier-To-Use Services And Mashups, Amit P. Sheth, Karthik Gomadam, Jonathan Lathem

Kno.e.sis Publications

Services based on the representational state transfer (REST) paradigm, a lightweight implementation of a service-oriented architecture, have found even greater success than their heavyweight siblings, which are based on the Web Services Description Language (WSDL.) and SOAP. By using XML-based messaging, RESTful services can bring together discrete data from different services to create meaningful data sets; mashups such as these are extremely popular today.

Evanescent Microwave Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube Films Grown On Silicon Carbide Substrate, Kineshma Munbodh Jan 2007

Evanescent Microwave Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube Films Grown On Silicon Carbide Substrate, Kineshma Munbodh

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The electromagnetic characterization of carbon nanotube films (CNT) grown by the surface decomposition of silicon carbide (SiC) has been performed. The CNT films formed on the carbon and silicon terminated face of the SiC substrate were uncapped by an annealing process at a temperature of 4000 C with dwelling time up to 60 minutes in oxygen or carbon dioxide atmosphere. X-Y scans of the quality factor were used to deduce the local conductive properties of the films measured by evanescent microwave microscopy. Real and imaginary permittivity values, as determined by these electromagnetic measurements, provided valuable information for future field emission …

Electron And Hole Traps In N-Doped Zno Grown On P-Type Si Substrate By Mocvd, Zhaoqiang Fang, Bruce B. Claflin, David C. Look, Lei L. Kerr, Xiaonan Li

Physics Faculty Publications

Electron and hole traps in N-doped ZnO were investigated using a structure of n+-ZnO:Al/i-ZnO/ZnO:N grown on a p-Si substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (for growth of the ZnO:N layer) and sputtering deposition (for growth of the i-ZnO and n+-ZnO:Al layers). Current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics measured at temperatures from 200 to 400 K show that the structure is an abrupt n+−p diode with very low leakage currents. By using deep level transient spectroscopy, two hole traps, H3 (0.35 eV) and H4 (0.48 eV), are found in the p-Si …

The Metal-Insulator Transition In Vo2 Studied Using Terahertz Apertureless Near-Field Microscopy, Hui Zhan, Victoria Astley, Michael Hvasta, Jason A. Deibel, Daniel M. Mittleman, Yong-Sik Lim Jan 2007

The Metal-Insulator Transition In Vo2 Studied Using Terahertz Apertureless Near-Field Microscopy, Hui Zhan, Victoria Astley, Michael Hvasta, Jason A. Deibel, Daniel M. Mittleman, Yong-Sik Lim

Physics Faculty Publications

We have studied the metal-insulator transition in a vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film using terahertz apertureless near-field optical microscopy. We observe a variation of the terahertz amplitude due to the phase transition induced by an applied voltage across the sample. The change of the terahertz signal is related to the abrupt change of the conductivity of the VO2 film at the metal-insulator transition. The subwavelength spatial resolution of this near-field microscopy makes it possible to detect signatures of micron-scale metallic domains in inhomogeneous VO2 thin films.

Students’ Use Of Symmetry With Gauss’S Law, Adrienne L. Traxler, Katrina E. Black, John R. Thompson Jan 2007

Students’ Use Of Symmetry With Gauss’S Law, Adrienne L. Traxler, Katrina E. Black, John R. Thompson

Physics Faculty Publications

To study introductory student difficulties with electrostatics, we compared student techniques when finding the electric field for spherically symmetric and non-spherically symmetric charged conductors. We used short interviews to design a free-response and multiple-choice-multiple-response survey that was administered to students in introductory calculus-based courses. We present the survey results and discuss them in light of Singh's results for Gauss's Law, Collins and Ferguson's epistemic forms and games, and Tuminaro's extension of games and frames.
