An Extension Of Sic Predictions To The Wiener Coactive Model, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend Jun 2011

An Extension Of Sic Predictions To The Wiener Coactive Model, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend

Psychology Faculty Publications

The survivor interaction contrasts (SIC) is a powerful measure for distinguishing among candidate models of human information processing. One class of models to which SIC analysis can apply are the coactive, or channel summation, models of human information processing. In general, parametric forms of coactive models assume that responses are made based on the first passage time across a fixed threshold of a sum of stochastic processes. Previous work has shown that the SIC for a coactive model based on the sum of Poisson processes has a distinctive down--up--down form, with an early negative region that is smaller than the …

Ga-Doped Zno Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition In H-2: The Roles Of Ga And H, David C. Look, T. C. Droubay, J. S. Mccloy, Z. H. Zhu, S. A. Chambers May 2011

Ga-Doped Zno Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition In H-2: The Roles Of Ga And H, David C. Look, T. C. Droubay, J. S. Mccloy, Z. H. Zhu, S. A. Chambers

Physics Faculty Publications

Highly conductive thin films of ZnO doped with Ga were grown by pulsed laser deposition with 10 mTorr of H2 in the growth chamber. Compared with a more conventional method of producing conductive films of ZnO, i.e., growth in O2 followed by annealing in forming gas (5% H2 in Ar), the H2 method requires no postgrowth anneal and also produces higher carrier concentrations and lower resistivities with better depth uniformity. As an example, a 65-nm-thick sample had a room-temperature mobility of 32 cm2/V s, a concentration of 6.8×1020 cm−3, and a …

Propagation Dynamics Of Controlled Cross-Talk Via Interplay Between Chi((1)) And Chi((3)) Processes, Paul S. Hsu, George R. Welch, James R. Gord, Anil K. Patnaik May 2011

Propagation Dynamics Of Controlled Cross-Talk Via Interplay Between Chi((1)) And Chi((3)) Processes, Paul S. Hsu, George R. Welch, James R. Gord, Anil K. Patnaik

Physics Faculty Publications

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the propagation dynamics of a nonlinear cross-talk effect between two probe channels in a double-ladder system and show that an interplay between χ(1) and χ(3) processes leads to the control of cross-talk. We derive analytical solutions to describe the propagation dynamics of the probe fields with the cross-talk effect built in. From the analytical results we identify and examine the regimes of interest where contributions of either χ(1) or χ(3) or both are significant. The control of cross-talk is demonstrated experimentally, and good quantitative agreement is found between the analytical solutions …

What's Happening In Semantic Web ... And What Fca Could Have To Do With It, Pascal Hitzler May 2011

What's Happening In Semantic Web ... And What Fca Could Have To Do With It, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The Semantic Web is gaining momentum. Driven by over 10 years of focused project funding in the US and the EU, Semantic Web Technologies are now entering application areas in industry, academia, government, and the open Web.

The Semantic Web is based on the idea of describing the meaning - or semantics - of data on the Web using metadata - data that describes other data - in the form of ontologies, which are represented using logic-based knowledge representation languages. Central to the transfer of Semantic Web into practice is the Linked Open Data effort, which has already resulted in …

Trust Networks: Interpersonal, Social, And Sensor, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Pramod Anantharam May 2011

Trust Networks: Interpersonal, Social, And Sensor, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Pramod Anantharam

Kno.e.sis Publications

Trust relationships occur naturally in many diverse contexts such as ecommerce, interpersonal interactions, social networks, sensor web, etc. As agents providing content and services become increasingly removed from the agents that consume them, the issue of robust trust inference and update become critical. Unfortunately, there is neither a universal notion of trust that is applicable to all domains nor a clear explication of its semantics or computation in many situations. In this beginner's level tutorial, we motivate the trust problem, explain the relevant concepts, summarize research in modeling trust and gleaning trustworthiness, and discuss challenges confronting us in this process.

Multiple Solutions For An Elliptic Problem Related To Vortex Pairs, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng Apr 2011

Multiple Solutions For An Elliptic Problem Related To Vortex Pairs, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Let Ω be a bounded domain in RN (N⩾2), φ a harmonic function in Ω¯. In this paper we study the existence of solutions to the following problem arising in the study of vortex pairs(Pλ){−Δu=λ(u−φ)+p−1,x∈Ω,u=0,x∈∂Ω. The set Ωp={x∈Ω,u(x)>φ} is called “vortex core”. Existence of solutions whose “vortex core” consists of one component and asymptotic behavior of “vortex core” were studied by many authors for large λ recently. Under the condition that φ has k strictly local minimum points on the boundary ∂Ω, we obtain in this paper that for λ large enough, (Pλ) has a solution with “vortex core” …

Turbulent Mixing And Layer Formation In Double-Diffusive Convection: 3d Numerical Simulations And Theory, Erica Rosenblum, Pascale Garaud, Adrienne L. Traxler, Stephan Stellmach Apr 2011

Turbulent Mixing And Layer Formation In Double-Diffusive Convection: 3d Numerical Simulations And Theory, Erica Rosenblum, Pascale Garaud, Adrienne L. Traxler, Stephan Stellmach

Physics Faculty Publications

Double-diffusive convection, often referred to as semi-convection in astrophysics, occurs in thermally and compositionally stratified systems which are stable according to the Ledoux criterion but unstable according to the Schwarzschild criterion. This process has been given relatively little attention so far, and its properties remain poorly constrained. In this paper, we present and analyze a set of three-dimensional simulations of this phenomenon in a Cartesian domain under the Boussinesq approximation. We find that in some cases the double-diffusive convection saturates into a state of homogeneous turbulence, but with turbulent fluxes several orders of magnitude smaller than those expected from direct …

Dna Barcoding Of Sea Turtle Leeches (Ozobranchus Spp.) In Florida Coastal Waters, Triet Minh Truong, Audrey E. Mcgowin Ph.D. Apr 2011

Dna Barcoding Of Sea Turtle Leeches (Ozobranchus Spp.) In Florida Coastal Waters, Triet Minh Truong, Audrey E. Mcgowin Ph.D.

Chemistry Student Publications

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a neoplastic disease originally identified only on green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). The disease is likely to be terminal if tumors are developed internally, but external tumors on the eyes, mouth, and flippers can also lead to fatal impairment of vision and difficulty feeding and swimming. The involvement of an environmental cofactor appears possible since many FP outbreaks occur at sites of poor water quality in Florida, Hawaii, Brazil, and other similar places around the world, but outbreaks have also been recorded at less contaminated sites. Studies have shown an association between FP and the fibropapilloma-associated turtle …

Role Of The 3'Lghrr In Tcdd-Induced Suppression Of The Immunoglobulin Heavy Chain, Jayharsh L. Panchal, Eric J. Romer, David Ellis, Tharu Fernando, Courtney E. W. Sulentic

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) inhibits antibody secretion and immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) expression. Our previous work has shown that a possible mechanism for inhibition of IgH expression could be inhibition of the 3’IgH regulatory region (3’IgHRR). The 3’IgHRR has four enhancer regions (hs3a; hs1,2; hs3b; hs4) which are purported to control IgH gene expression. Previously we demonstrated a sensitive inhibition by TCDD of LPS-induced 3’IgHRR activity which is correlated with an inhibition of LPS-induced hs1,2 enhancer activity; however, the hs4 enhancer showed TCDD-induced activation following the co-treatment of TCDD and LPS. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to determine if …
