Indeed, logic permeates most areas of Computer Science in one way or the other, sometimes more prominently, and sometimes as motivational or formal underpinning. Examples are database schema, program verification, semantics of programming languages, computer security, artificial intelligence, cognitive robotics, Web information systems, computer hardware circuitry, or modeling in software engineering.

General Recognition Theory Extended To Include Response Times: Predictions For A Class Of Parallel Systems, James T. Townsend, Joseph W. Houpt, Noah H. Silbert Jan 2012

General Recognition Theory Extended To Include Response Times: Predictions For A Class Of Parallel Systems, James T. Townsend, Joseph W. Houpt, Noah H. Silbert

Psychology Faculty Publications

General Recognition Theory (GRT; Ashby & Townsend, 1986) is a multidimensional theory of classification. Originally developed to study various types of perceptual independence, it has also been widely employed in diverse cognitive venues, such as categorization. The initial theory and applications have been static, that is, lacking a time variable and focusing on patterns of responses, such as confusion matrices. Ashby proposed a parallel, dynamic stochastic version of GRT with application to perceptual independence based on discrete linear systems theory with imposed noise (Ashby, 1989). The current study again focuses on cognitive/perceptual independence within an identification classification paradigm. We extend …

Developing A Semantic Web Crawler To Locate Owl Documents, Ronald Dean Koron Jan 2012

Developing A Semantic Web Crawler To Locate Owl Documents, Ronald Dean Koron

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The terms Semantic Web and OWL are relatively new and growing concepts in the World Wide Web. Because these concepts are so new there are relatively few applications and/or tools for utilizing the potential power of this new concept. Although there are many components to the Semantic Web, this thesis will focus on the research question, "How do we go about developing a web crawler for the Semantic Web that locates and retrieves OWL documents." Specifically for this thesis, we hypothesize that by giving URIs to OWL documents, including all URIs from within these OWL documents, priority over other types …

Radio-Frequency Heating Of Magnetic Nanoparticles, Mohammud Zafrullah Jagoo Jan 2012

Radio-Frequency Heating Of Magnetic Nanoparticles, Mohammud Zafrullah Jagoo

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, a power supply capable of converting a direct current into an alternating current was built. The frequency of oscillation of the output current could be varied from 174.8 kHz to 726.0 kHz by setting a set of capacitors in resonance. To this power supply is attached a 20-turns copper coil in the shape of a spiral. Because of the high heat generated in the coil, the latter has to be permanently water-cooled. A vacuum pump removes the air between the sample holder and the coil. A fiber optic temperature sensor with an accuracy of 0.001 K …

A Basic Understanding Of Rapid Mold Surface Heating Via Laser Energy, Charles Daniel Fox Jan 2012

A Basic Understanding Of Rapid Mold Surface Heating Via Laser Energy, Charles Daniel Fox

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

As the research and development of surface heating methods have increased in the recent years, the consensus has been reached amongst the injection molding community that an elevated mold surface temperature near or greater than the polymer solidification temperature provides acceptable replication of the desired micro-structured parts. The laser heating experimental work and simulation development carried out includes two sample sizes similar to those used in injection molding. A 100W CO2 laser incident on three samples of different surface roughnesses has shown to have elevated temperatures via thermal cameral data and thermocouple measurements. Among five different laser spot sizes varying …

This research investigates the broad region of the Zinc Oxide luminescence spectrum known as the green band, which lies roughly between 480 - 580 nm or …

Optimization Of Wsu Total Ankle Replacement Systems, Bradley Jay Elliott Jan 2012

Optimization Of Wsu Total Ankle Replacement Systems, Bradley Jay Elliott

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Total ankle arthroplasty (TAR) is performed in order to reduce the pain and loss of ambulation in patients with various forms of arthritis and trauma. Although replacement devices fail by a number of mechanisms, wear in the polyethylene liner constitutes one of the dominating failure modes. This leads to instability and loosening of the implant. Mechanisms that contribute to wear in the liners are high contact and subsurface stresses that break down the material over time. Therefore, it is important to understand the gait that generates these stresses. Methods to characterize and decrease wear in Ohio TARs have been performed …

Near Single-Molecule Sers-Based Detection Using Ultrafiltered, Unfunctionalized Silver Nanoparticles, Joshua Dale Baker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are currently widely-used in consumer products, therapeutics, biomedical devices, and electronics. Yet, one application for which AgNPs have been used extensively is surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensing. However, AgNP size and aggregation state are known to greatly influence these applications. This works aimed 1) to synthesize a large volume of unfunctionalized, Creighton AgNPs, to characterize their chemical and physical properties, 2) then to size-select AgNPs of 1-50 nm and 50-100 nm in diameter and to concentrate them using a three-step, "green" tangential flow ultrafiltration (TFU) process. 3) Finally, to determine and compare the SERS-based sensing capabilities of …

Characterization Of Structured Nanomaterials Using Terahertz Frequency Radiation, Andrew John Niklas

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Measurements that use terahertz frequency radiation to characterize materials are beneficial for scientists trying to determine the physical parameters that govern the interaction of electromagnetic waves and matter at those frequencies. Results will be presented of time domain terahertz spectroscopy measurements taken in forward and backward scattering directions from vertically aligned arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and thin films of perforated copper. The intent of this research is to both corroborate results from independent research groups conducting similar experiments and to further increase understanding in the scientific community with respect to carbon nanotube reflection phenomena at terahertz frequencies.

Micro-Raman Imaging And Hyperspectral Analysis Of Tibiotarsi From Chick Embryos Exposed To Sublethal Doses Of Platinum Group Metals, Adam Christopher Stahler

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e., Pd, Pt and Rh, are found at pollutant levels in the environment. PGMs accumulate in plant and animal tissues, and little is known about their toxicity. Our previous studies have shown that chick embryos exposed to 1.0 mL PGM solutions of 5.0 ppm (LD50) and higher exhibited severe skeletal deformities. This work hypothesized that 1.0 ppm sublethal doses of PGMs would negatively impact the mineralization process in tibiotarsi. One milliliter of 1.0 ppm of Pd(II), Pt(IV), Rh(III) aqueous salt solutions and a PGM-mixture were injected into the air sac of the eggs …

Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) was performed on data collected at four locations previously occupied by 3-component broadband seismometers. The goal was to use MASW to define the velocity structure and depth to bedrock locally, and to examine how well the calculated surface layer resonance derived from this velocity structure compares with the surface layer resonance observed in the passive seismic data at that site. At the test site east of Xenia, Ohio, a clear change in lithology (glacial drift to limestone bedrock) on each of the 1-D MASW profiles is indicated by a substantial change in shear-wave velocity …

Human Action Recognition By Principal Component Analysis Of Motion Curves, Daniel Stephen Chivers

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Human action recognition is used to automatically detect and recognize actions per- formed by humans in a video. Applications include visual surveillance, human-computer interaction, and robot intelligence, to name a few. An example of a surveillance application is a system that monitors a large public area, such as an airport, for suspicious activity. In human-machine interaction, computers may be controlled by simple human actions. For example, the motion of an arm may instruct the computer to rotate a 3-D model that is being displayed. Human action recognition is also an important capability of intelligent robots that interact with humans.

An Optimization Approach To Indoor Location Problem Based On Received Signal Strength, Lei Zheng

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This research was motivated by the desire of a Fortune 100 retail company to track its customers' behaviors through the implementation of a low-cost indoor location system using received signal devices. Indoor location through received signal strength (RSS) is of low costs, yet it suffers from poor accuracy due to lack of direct line-of-sight, multi-path ratio propagation, and various interferences. To improve its location estimation accuracy, therefore, we propose a mathematical programming based propagation approach for RSS based location systems. The core of our approach is an optimization model that minimizes the sum of squared errors of signal strength. In …

Using the traditional catalyst, aluminum chloride in stoichiometric amounts, 3-alkyl-1-(phenylsulfonyl)indoles can be regioselectively acylated under Friedel-Crafts conditions at the C-6 position along with 10% of a minor isomer at the C-5 position. Alternatively, using catalytic amounts of the green catalyst, bismuth triflate, C-2 acylation was observed. Therefore, regioselectivity can be controlled by the nature of the Lewis acid catalyst. Moreover, this is the first-time that Friedel-Crafts acylation studies were demonstrated upon 3-alkyl-1-(phenylsulfonyl)indoles.

The goal for this study was to determine if a quiescent infection of HSV-1 could be induced in murine fibroblasts L929 by treating them with the anti-mitotic agent 5-fluoro 2'deoxy uridine (FUDR) alone and with interferon-γ. Since neurons are post-mitotic and exhibit a lower metabolic rate than other cells, fibroblasts were treated with FUDR to induce a post-mitotic state. The cell cycle arrest of fibroblasts would decrease the thymidylate metabolism and impair HSV-1 replication. An evaluation of cytopathic effects of FUDR was used to determine the optimal concentration which arrests cell growth and inhibits viral replication. Image J program developed …

Behavioral Signature-Based Framework For Identifying Unsatisfiable Variable Mappings Between Digital Designs, Vaibhav Uday Tendulkar

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Throughout its design process (from specification to implementation) a digital circuit goes through a variety of structural changes. These changes are introduced primarily due to the use of automated tools in the design process. Checking whether the Boolean functions representing the two designs are equivalent is thus necessary to verify if a design implementation adheres to its specification. Combinational Equivalence Checking (CEC) - a process of determining whether two combinational design functions are equiv-alent, has been one of the most researched Boolean matching problems. The well-known CEC techniques that have been proposed adopt some kind of a formal approach such …

Effects Of Conductivity And Fish Grazing On Alkaline Phosphatase Activity Of Littoral Periphyton, Samuel A. Drerup

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Littoral periphyton plays an important role in whole lake primary production and is a substantial contributor to whole lake energy budgets in moderately deep oligotrophic lakes. Under conditions of nutrient deficiency, members of the periphyton community supplement the available nutrient pool through the production of intracellular and extracellular enzymes. These enzymes are used to convert bio-unavailable forms of nitrogen and phosphorous to forms usable by the periphyton community. In this paper, I will investigate how conductivity and fish grazing affect periphyton production and phosphorus acquisition in both field and laboratory experiments.

The synthesis of poly(arylene ether sulfone)s, with a pendant aryl iodide, was achieved via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (NAS) polycondensation of 3-iodo-3',5'-difluoro-diphenylsulfone (2) with Bisphenol-A. Monomer 2 was prepared by the reaction of 3, 5-difluorodiphenylsulfone with N-iodosuccinimide (NIS). Model reactions indicated that the iodo group was stable to NAS conditions. Both GC/MS analysis and NMR spectroscopy indicated quantitative displacement of the two fluorine atoms while the iodo group remained untouched. Furthermore, the modification of the iodo polymer was achieved via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction with phenyl, naphthyl, and phenylacetyl boronic acids. The thermal properties of the polymers were evaluated via DSC and …
