The diverse family of flies Tachinidae are a significant component of insect communities in nearly all terrestrial systems from deserts to tropical forests to the high arctic. Due to their parasitoid habit, tachinids are important enemies of a variety of other insect groups. Despite the apparent importance of this group, current studies—including ecological and biogeographic studies—are limited by taxonomic and systematic impediments, including unknown phylogenetic frameworks for most tribes, poorly known generic limits, and a large number of undescribed tropical species. Here I present studies in taxonomy, systematics, phylogenetics and ecology of the Polideini of the Neotropical region organized in …

Abnormal glycosylation can impact cardiac proteins, affecting signaling, contraction, and metabolism, which leads to compromised cardiac function. O-GlcNAcylation, the only form of intracellular glycosylation, involves adding a single GlcNAc molecule to proteins via enzymes: O-GlcNAc Transferase (OGT) for addition and O-GlcNAcase (OGA) for removal. The Ednie/Bennett lab has previously demonstrated that in both chronic (OGT KO) and acute (OGT inhibition) models of reduced cardiomyocyte O-GlcNAcylation, a disruption of Ca2+ homeostasis occurs. This study delved into the cardiac voltage-gated sodium channel (NaV 1.5) in these models. NaV 1.5 expression was analyzed through western blotting and immunocytochemistry, while its functional activity was …
Icing Mitigation Via High-Pressure Membrane Dehumidification In An Aircraft Thermal Management, Danielle D. Hollon
Icing Mitigation Via High-Pressure Membrane Dehumidification In An Aircraft Thermal Management, Danielle D. Hollon
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Icing, or the formation of ice from water via freezing or water vapor via desublimation, is a phenomenon that commonly occurs within air cycle-based refrigeration systems and requires thermal control that limits system performance. In aircraft applications icing frequently occurs in the heat exchangers and turbine(s) that are part of the air cycle machine, the refrigeration unit of the environmental control system. Traditionally, water vapor is removed from an air cycle machine via condensing in a heat exchanger and subsequent high-pressure water separation. This approach is not capable of removing all of the vapor present at low altitude conditions, corresponding …

Machine learning techniques utilize training data samples to help understand, predict, classify, and make valuable decisions for different applications such as medicine, email filtering, speech recognition, agriculture, and computer vision, where it is challenging or unfeasible to produce traditional algorithms to accomplish the needed tasks. Unsupervised ML-based approaches have emerged for building groups of data samples known as data clusters for driving necessary decisions about these data samples and helping solve challenges in critical applications. Data clustering is used in multiple fields, including health, finance, social networks, education, and science. Sequential processing of clustering algorithms, like the K-Means, Minibatch K-Means, …
Establishing Roots Before Branching Out: Parameter Recovery In Item Response Tree Models, Tyler Ryan
Establishing Roots Before Branching Out: Parameter Recovery In Item Response Tree Models, Tyler Ryan
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Item Response Trees are a type of item response model that incorporates information about conditional responding to items using a rooted tree graph structure. Researchers have used item response trees for common measurement tasks and for testing novel hypotheses. Previous simulation studies investigating item response trees either lack generalizability to the broad domain of their use or lack thorough investigation and reporting of the results. I conducted a simulation study to explore how sample size, test length, item characteristics, and tree structure affect both item and person parameter recovery for 1PL and 2PL models. The results suggested that, as with …

This work is investigating a dual mode Rankine cycle for aircraft applications, specifically meeting vehicle thermal and power requirements. This multiconfigurational approach allows the Thermal Management System (TMS) to be controlled based on aircraft needs. In this design, waste heat is removed from critical areas of the aircraft (e.g., propulsion, structure, subsystems) using the fuel as a heat sink. Hot fuel is then forced through a heat exchanger actively boiling water. The vapor byproduct is fed to a turbine coupled to a generator, providing power. The low-pressure steam is then condensed using cold fuel drawn from its tank; however, when …
Anomaly Detection In Multi-Seasonal Time Series Data, Ashton Taylor Williams
Anomaly Detection In Multi-Seasonal Time Series Data, Ashton Taylor Williams
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Most of today’s time series data contain anomalies and multiple seasonalities, and accurate anomaly detection in these data is critical to almost any type of business. However, most mainstream forecasting models used for anomaly detection can only incorporate one or no seasonal component into their forecasts and cannot capture every known seasonal pattern in time series data. In this thesis, we propose a new multi-seasonal forecasting model for anomaly detection in time series data that extends the popular Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model. Our model, named multi-SARIMA, utilizes a time series dataset’s multiple pre-determined seasonal trends to increase …

High concentrations of phosphate are known to adversely affect the environment. Excess phosphate can lead to eutrophication that eventually fosters uncontrollable growth of aquatic plants and algae. This can result in depletion of oxygen content which adversely impacts underwater organism’s survival rates. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) consist of organic linkers in conjunction with metal ions or clusters arranged within a crystalline structure. They are highly porous and have larger surface area due to their ability to possess extensive void spaces while remaining bulky in nature. MOFs can absorb phosphate from aqueous solutions. We have investigated the use of commercially available …

Deploying Mandatory Access Controls (MAC) is a popular way to provide host protection against malware. Unfortunately, current implementations lack the flexibility to adapt to emergent malware threats and are known for being difficult to configure. A core tenet of MAC security systems is that the policies they are deployed with are immutable from the host while they are active. This work looks at deploying a MAC system that leverages using encrypted security tokens to allow for redeploying policy configurations in real-time without the need to stop a running process. This is instrumental in developing an adaptive framework for security systems …

Successful crop production relies on soils with balanced physical, chemical and biological properties. Demand for greater crop yields has led to the breakdown of soil properties through detrimental agricultural practices. To combat soil degradation, farmers employ field management practices including cover crop application, crop rotation strategies and organic soil amendment addition. These practices, used independently or in combination, can improve soil stability, increase soil nutrient content and functions of beneficial soil microbiota while increasing crop yield. Despite showing promise as an organic soil amendment, dredged sediments are still not well understood, due in part to the fresh or weathered conditions …
Digital Beamforming Array Phase Calibration Techniques For Multi-Pass Interferometric Sar, Kelly Cheung
Digital Beamforming Array Phase Calibration Techniques For Multi-Pass Interferometric Sar, Kelly Cheung
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Calibration plays a critical role in the optimal performance of algorithms in digital beamforming arrays. Phase incoherency between elements results in poor beamforming with decreased gain and higher sidelobes, leading to a decrease in accuracy and sensitivity of measurements. A similar problem exists in performing multi-pass interferometric SAR (IFSAR) processing of SAR data stacks to generate topological maps of the scene, where phase errors translate to height errors. By treating each SAR image in the data stack like an element of a uniform linear array, this thesis explores several phase calibration techniques that can be used to calibrate digital beamforming …

Heart failure is a syndrome which effects a patient’s quality of life adversely. It can be caused by different underlying conditions or abnormalities and involves both cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular comorbidities. Heart failure cannot be cured but a patient’s quality of life can be improved by effective treatment through medicines and surgery, and lifestyle management. As effective treatment of heart failure incurs cost for the patients and resource allocation for the hospitals, predicting length of stay of these patients during each hospitalization becomes important. Heart failure can be classified into two types: left sided heart failure and right sided heart failure. …

During infection, viruses are released from infected cells and spread to neighboring cells either through a lytic pathway (by rupturing cells), a non-lytic pathway (such as the use of extracellular vesicles), or both pathways. Human astroviruses (HAstV) are highly prevalent non-enveloped positive sense RNA viruses. They are separated into three clades, classic-type, MLB-type and VA-type, in humans. They are identified as the third leading cause of viral gastroenteritis in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised patients. Yet, little is known about the replication, transmission, immunity, and epidemiology of these viruses. Thus, I sought to investigate the possible pathways HAstV utilize to …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Although α-synuclein (α-syn) has been linked genetically and pathologically to Parkinson’s disease, the mechanism by which it drives disease pathogenesis is not fully understood. When α-syn is overexpressed in yeast, it forms abnormal cytoplasmic accumulations and leads to cell death, resembling the phenotypes observed in neurons. Such yeast models have been widely used to uncover molecular mechanisms of α-syn toxicity, but the induction of α-syn relies on growing yeast in galactose, a fermentable carbon source. Yeast does not require cellular respiration when grown in galactose, thus limiting the understanding of α-syn toxicity when cellular respiration is essential for neurons. We …

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe and progressive muscular dystrophy that develops in the skeletal muscles because of mutations in the dystrophin gene. Dystrophin stabilizes sarcolemma and assembles neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) into the dystrophin-associated protein complex on the sarcolemma. The absence of dystrophin triggers the delocalization of nNOS and contributes to the misregulation of muscle development, blood flow, muscle fatigue, and inflammation. Lipin1 was reduced in the skeletal muscles of patients with DMD and the mdx mouse model of DMD. In this study, we explored the role of lipin1 in the regulation of nNOS expression and function. …

As our world has become dependent upon software for nearly every aspect of modern society, software security has followed as an essential feature. The first line of defense against vulnerabilities is secure coding. While today’s programmers are carefully taught secure coding best practices, they can make mistakes or intentionally introduce vulnerable code. The traditional backstop to human errors and insider threats is the adoption of automated security analysis tools. These analysis tools have limitations. Static analysis suffers from high false positive rates that may cause annoyance and complacency among developers. Dynamic analysis can be difficult to set up and very …

Zaslavsky observed that the topics of directed cycles in directed graphs and alternating cycles in edge 2-colored graphs have a common generalization in the study of coherent cycles in bidirected graphs. There are classical theorems by Camion, Harary and Moser, Häggkvist and Manoussakis, and Saad which relate strong connectivity and Hamiltonicity in directed "complete" graphs and edge 2-colored "complete" graphs. We prove two analogues to these theorems for bidirected "complete" signed graphs.

In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), abnormalities in motoneuronal excitability are seen in early pathogenesis and throughout disease progression. Fully understanding motoneuron excitability dysfunction may lead to more effective treatments. Yet decades of research have not produced consensus on the nature, role or underlying mechanisms of motoneuron excitability dysfunction in ALS. For example, contrary to Ca excitotoxicity theory, predictions of motoneuronal hyper-excitability, normal and hypo-excitability have also been seen at various disease stages and in multiple ALS lines. Accordingly, motoneuron excitability dysfunction in ALS is a disputed topic in the field. Specifically, the form (hyper, hypo or unchanged) and what role …
