Background

Genome sequencing of many eukaryotic pathogens and the volume of data available on public resources have created a clear requirement for a consistent vocabulary to describe the range of developmental forms of parasites. Consistent labeling of experimental data and external data, in databases and the literature, is essential for integration, cross database comparison, and knowledge discovery. The primary objective of this work was to develop a dynamic and controlled vocabulary that can be used for various parasites. The paper describes the Ontology for Parasite Lifecycle (OPL) and discusses its application in parasite research.

Blind Cyclostationary Carrier Frequency And Symbol Rate Estimation For Underwater Acoustic Communication, Zhiqiang Wu, T. C. Yang Jan 2012

Blind Cyclostationary Carrier Frequency And Symbol Rate Estimation For Underwater Acoustic Communication, Zhiqiang Wu, T. C. Yang

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a new method for blind carrier frequency and symbol rate estimation based on second order cyclostationary features for underwater acoustic communication. Followed by a coarse carrier frequency and symbol rate estimation via spectral analysis, a cyclostationary based estimation algorithm is developed to provide high resolution estimation of both parameters. Specifically, a short time varying resolution spectrum correlation function and spectrum coherence function algorithm is developed to obtain spectral lines in cyclic frequency domain to accurately estimate (1) varying carrier frequency and Doppler shift caused by relative motion and (2) symbol rate for single carrier communication. …

A Mems Photoacoustic Detector Of Terahertz Radiation For Chemical Sensing, Nathan E. Glauvitz, S. Blazevic, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Michael N. Kistler, Ivan Medvedev, Douglas T. Petkie Jan 2012

A Mems Photoacoustic Detector Of Terahertz Radiation For Chemical Sensing, Nathan E. Glauvitz, S. Blazevic, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Michael N. Kistler, Ivan Medvedev, Douglas T. Petkie

Physics Faculty Publications

A piezoelectric Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) cantilever pressure sensor was designed, modeled, fabricated, and tested for sensing the photoacoustic response of gases to terahertz (THz) radiation. The sensing layers were comprised of three thin films; a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric layer sandwiched between two metal contact layers. The sensor materials were deposited on the silicon device layer of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer, which formed the physical structure of the cantilever. To release the cantilever, a hole was etched through the backside of the wafer and the buried oxide was removed with hydrofluoric acid. Devices were then tested in a custom …

Broadband 180 Degree Universal Rotation Pulses For Nmr Spectroscopy Designed By Optimal Control, Thomas E. Skinner, Naum I. Gershenzon, Manoj Nimbalkar, Wolfgang Bermel, Burkhard Luy, Steffen J. Glaser

Physics Faculty Publications

Broadband inversion pulses that rotate all magnetization components 180 degrees about a given fixed axis are necessary for refocusing and mixing in high-resolution NMR spectroscopy. The relative merits of various methodologies for generating pulses suitable for broadband refocusing are considered. The de novo design of 180 degree universal rotation pulses using optimal control can provide improved performance compared to schemes which construct refocusing pulses as composites of existing pulses. The advantages of broadband universal rotation by optimized pulses (BURBOP) are most evident for pulse design that includes tolerance to RF inhomogeneity or miscalibration. We present new modifications of the optimal …

Model For Triggering Of Non-Volcanic Tremor By Earthquakes, Naum I. Gershenzon, Gust Bambakidis Jan 2012

Model For Triggering Of Non-Volcanic Tremor By Earthquakes, Naum I. Gershenzon, Gust Bambakidis

Physics Faculty Publications

There is evidence of tremor triggering by seismic waves emanating from distant large earthquakes. The frequency content of both triggered and ambient tremor are largely identical, suggesting that this property does not depend directly on the nature of the source. We show here that the model of plate dynamics developed earlier by us is an appropriate tool for describing tremor triggering. In the framework of this model, tremor is an internal response of a fault to a failure triggered by external disturbances. The model predicts generation of radiation in a frequency range defined by the fault parameters. Thus, although the …

Stable Highly Conductive Zno Via Reduction Of Zn Vacancies, David C. Look, Timothy C. Droubay, Scott A. Chambers Jan 2012

Stable Highly Conductive Zno Via Reduction Of Zn Vacancies, David C. Look, Timothy C. Droubay, Scott A. Chambers

Physics Faculty Publications

Growth of Ga-doped ZnO by pulsed laser deposition at 200 °C in an ambient of Ar and H2produces a resistivity of 1.5 × 10−4 Ω-cm, stable to 500 °C. The resistivity can be further reduced to 1.2 × 10−4 Ω-cm by annealing on Zn foil, which reduces the compensating Zn-vacancy acceptor concentration NA to 5 × 1019 cm−3, only 3% of the Ga-donor concentration ND of 1.6 × 1021 cm−3, with ND and NA determined from a degenerate mobility theory. The plasmon-resonance wavelength is only 1060 …

A New Model For Mixing By Double-Diffusive Convection (Semi-Convection): I. The Conditions For Layer Formation, G. M. Mirouh, P. Garaud, S. Stellmach, Adrienne L. Traxler, T. S. Wood Jan 2012

A New Model For Mixing By Double-Diffusive Convection (Semi-Convection): I. The Conditions For Layer Formation, G. M. Mirouh, P. Garaud, S. Stellmach, Adrienne L. Traxler, T. S. Wood

Physics Faculty Publications

The process referred to as "semi-convection" in astrophysics and "double-diffusive convection in the diffusive regime" in Earth and planetary sciences occurs in stellar and planetary interiors in regions which are stable according to the Ledoux criterion but unstable according to the Schwarzschild criterion. In this series of papers, we analyze the results of an extensive suite of three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations of the process, and ultimately propose a new 1D prescription for heat and compositional transport in this regime which can be used in stellar or planetary structure and evolution models. In a preliminary study of the phenomenon, Rosenblum et …

Mandibular Bone Mechanics And Evaluation Of Temporomandibular Joint Devices, Shirishkumar Marutirao Ingawale

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of the mandibular and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) biomechanics is of importance in various clinical scenarios as it helps better understanding of the structure and function necessary to diagnose, prevent, and treat temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The objectives of this dissertation research were to characterize biomechanical behavior of cadaveric human mandible, and to design and analyze patient-specific total TMJ prostheses. We performed a combined experimental-numerical study to validate the finite element (FE) models of 16 cadaveric human mandibles by comparing strain gauge measurements with FE-predicted surface strains. Analysis of experimental data showed that strains at the condylar locations were significantly different …

The Biogeochemistry Of Carbon Isotopes In Local Lakes, Stephen Edward Sadurski Jan 2012

The Biogeochemistry Of Carbon Isotopes In Local Lakes, Stephen Edward Sadurski

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Photosynthesis, respiration, and decay of organic matter all involve the transfer of carbon among the carbon-bearing species in the systems. These biogeochemical processes also fractionate the carbon isotope composition, which results in changes to the carbon isotope composition of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) pool. This thesis presents two separate, but related studies regarding the influence of biogeochemical processes on carbon isotopes in local lakes. Crystal Lake is a small but deep glacial lake (12.5 acres, 11.9 meters). The study shows that during thermal stratification, the heaviest carbon can be found in the epilimnion near the surface, where photosynthesis dominates …

Towards Cloud Mobile Hybrid Application Generation Using Semantically Enriched Domain Specific Languages, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Amit P. Sheth, Ashwin Manjunatha, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The advancements in computing have resulted in a boom of cheap, ubiquitous, connected mobile devices as well as seemingly unlimited, utility style, pay as you go computing resources, commonly referred to as Cloud computing. Taking advantage of this computing landscape, however, has been hampered by the many heterogeneities that exist in the mobile space as well as the Cloud space.

This research attempts to introduce a disciplined methodology to develop Cloud-mobile hybrid applications by using a Domain Specific Language (DSL) centric approach to generate applications. A Cloud-mobile hybrid is an application that is split between a Cloud based back-end and …

Resident Identification Using Kinect Depth Image Data And Fuzzy Clustering Techniques, Tanvi Banerjee, James M. Keller, Marjorie Skubic

Kno.e.sis Publications

As a part of our passive fall risk assessment research in home environments, we present a method to identify older residents using features extracted from their gait information from a single depth camera. Depth images have been collected continuously for about eight months from several apartments at a senior housing facility. Shape descriptors such as bounding box information and image moments were extracted from silhouettes of the depth images. The features were then clustered using Possibilistic C Means for resident identification. This technology will allow researchers and health professionals to gather more information on the individual residents by filtering out …

Reservoir Characterization And Seismic Expression Of The Clinton Interval Over Dominion's Gabor Gas Storage Field In North-East Ohio, Scott Michael Bey Jan 2012

Reservoir Characterization And Seismic Expression Of The Clinton Interval Over Dominion's Gabor Gas Storage Field In North-East Ohio, Scott Michael Bey

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In northeastern Ohio, an interval of interbedded sandstone and shale between the Queenston Shale and the Dayton Formation (both in the Silurian System) has long been referred to as the "Clinton interval". The Clinton interval has produced oil and gas for over a century, but has been converted locally to gas storage. Within the Clinton interval, reservoirs are commonly compartmentalized, in part because the sandstones are discontinuous but also because fractures enhance permeability in portions of otherwise continuous sandstones. The goal of this study is to characterize the Clinton interval within the Gabor gas storage field of Dominion East Ohio …

Application Of The Human-Machine Interaction Model To Multiple Attribute Task Battery (Matb): Task Component Interaction And The Strategy Paradigm, Craig M. Walters

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The Multiple-Attribute Task Battery (MATB) is composed of four simultaneously running components to which a human operator responds. A prior report has quantified information content as a machine input baud rate using the Hick-Hyman and Fitt's Laws for three of the four components and defines a strategy function. This report covers methods to quantify information content of the fourth component, creating a single metric which describes overall task complexity and evaluates human performance and strategy. Six MATB task-scenarios (combinations of two, three, or all four MATB components) each at two input baud rates are evaluated. Subjects were also provided with …
