Demo: Approximate Semantic Matching In The Collider Event Processing Engine, Souleiman Hasan, Kalpa Gunaratna, Yongrui Qin, Edward Curry

Kno.e.sis Publications

This demo presents a use case from the energy management domain. It builds upon previous work on approximate semantic matching of heterogeneous events and compares two semantic matching scenarios: exact and approximate. It illustrates how a large number of exact matching event subscriptions are needed to match heterogeneous power consumption events. It then demonstrates how a small number of approximate semantic matching subscriptions are needed but possibly with a lower true positives/negatives performance. The demo is delivered via the COLLIDER approximate event processing engine currently under development in DERI.

Understanding Common Perceptions From Online Social Media, Derek Doran, Swapna S. Gokhale, Aldo Dagnino Jun 2013

Understanding Common Perceptions From Online Social Media, Derek Doran, Swapna S. Gokhale, Aldo Dagnino

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Modern society habitually uses online social media services to publicly share observations, thoughts, opinions, and beliefs at any time and from any location. These geotagged social media posts may provide aggregate insights into people's perceptions on a bad range of topics across a given geographical area beyond what is currently possible through services such as Yelp and Foursquare. This paper develops probabilistic language models to investigate whether collective, topic-based perceptions within a geographical area can be extracted from the content of geotagged Twitter posts. The capability of the methodology is illustrated using tweets from three areas of different sizes. An …

An Ontology Design Pattern For Cartographic Map Scaling, David Carral, Simon Scheider, Krzysztof Janowicz, Charles Vardeman Ii, Adila A. Krisnadhi, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The concepts of scale is at the core of cartographic abstraction and mapping. It defines which geographic phenomena should be displayed, which type of geometry and map symbol to use, which measures can be taken, as well as the degree to which features need to be exaggerated or spatially displaced. In this work, we present an ontology design pattern for map scaling using the Web Ontology Language (OWL) within a particular extension of the OWL RL profile. We explain how it can be used to describe scaling applications, to reason over scale levels, and geometric representations. We propose an axiomatization …

There's No Money In Linked Data, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Krzysztof Janowicz, Chitra Venkatramani

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Linked Data (LD) has been an active research area for more than 6 years and many aspects about publishing, retrieving, linking, and cleaning Linked Data have been investigated. There seems to be a broad and general agreement that in principle LD datasets can be very useful for solving a wide variety of problems ranging from practical industrial analytics to highly specific research problems. Having these notions in mind, we started exploring the use of notable LD datasets such as DBpedia, Freebase, Geonames and others for a commercial application. However, it turns out that using these datasets in realistic settings is …

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Cognitive performance and fatigue are well known to be inversely related. Continuous and sustained actions in operational environments typically lead to reduced sleep normally required to perform optimally. These operational environments subject the warfighter to intense physical and mental exertion. Because fatigue continues to be an occupational hazard, leading to cognitive defects in performance, there has been a recognized need for real-time detection technologies that minimize fatigue-induced mishaps. I the current study, 23 subjects were subjected to 36h of sleep deprivation and cognitive psychomotor vigilance and automated neuropsychological assessment metric tests were conducted over the last 24 h of sleep …

Dynamics And Kinetics Of Radicals: Combustion To Multiscale Materials Modeling, Amit R. Sharma Apr 2013

Dynamics And Kinetics Of Radicals: Combustion To Multiscale Materials Modeling, Amit R. Sharma

Physics Seminars

Current combustion models have been developed and validated with low-pressure experimental data, and they fail at the high pressures of real devices. The goal of my research is to explore the fundamental effects of high pressure on the chemical kinetics of combustion relevant reactions. This knowledge will be used in the development of accurate models for combustion at the high pressures of current and future engines and novel alternate fuels. Some recent experimental studies of the recombination reactions have demonstrated a second-rise in the rate constant for loss of reactants at very high pressures. It has been speculated that this …

Understanding The Magnetic Ground States For Improper Multiferroic Materials, Jason T. Haraldsen Apr 2013

Understanding The Magnetic Ground States For Improper Multiferroic Materials, Jason T. Haraldsen

Physics Seminars

Multiferroic materials have the unique multi-functionality of controlling magnetism through electric field and/or electric polarization through magnetic field, which presents possibilities for new technological advances and applications. To fully understand the connection between magnetism and electric polarization, one must have a full understanding of the underlying magnetic ground states within these materials. Through an investigation of the multiferroic material CuFeO2, I examine the effects of anisotropy and magnetic field on the frustrated triangular lattice and determine the magnetic ground states. Through a rotational algorithm of the Holstein-Primakoff expansion for the spin Hamiltonian, the spin-wave dynamics for the multiferroic and high-magnetic-field …

Exploiting Quantum Phenomena Toward Technological Advancement, Deborah Santamore Apr 2013

Exploiting Quantum Phenomena Toward Technological Advancement, Deborah Santamore

Physics Seminars

Technological advancement is often associated with scaling down electronic devices. As the size decreases, quantum phenomena start to govern the device performance. Electron transport through real, and artificial, suspended molecular systems have revealed a rich tapestry of physical effects. Single-molecule electronics offer the promise of observing and controlling quantum effects in massive objects. In addition, the molecules provide the benefit of stronger coupling of vibrational and oscillatory modes to the transport process and a large range of practical applications than traditional nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). In this talk, I will discuss the steady-state electronic transport through a suspended dimer molecule transistor. …

Slip Flow Regimes And Induced Fluid Structure In Nanoscale Polymer Films: Recent Results From Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Nikolai V. Priezjev Apr 2013

Slip Flow Regimes And Induced Fluid Structure In Nanoscale Polymer Films: Recent Results From Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Physics Seminars

Over the last decade, there has been enormous interest in understanding transport phenomena in micro and nanofluidic systems and, in particular, in accurate prediction of fluid flows with slip boundary conditions at liquid-solid interfaces. In this presentation we will discuss recent results obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of fluids that consist of monomers or linear polymer chains confined by crystalline surfaces. The effects of shear rate and wall lattice orientation on the slip behavior are studied for a number of material parameters of the interface, such as fluid and wall densities, wall-fluid interaction energy, polymer chain length, and wall lattice …

Heterodox Economics: The Alternative To Neoliberal Market-Fundametalist Economics, Tae-Hee Jo Apr 2013

Heterodox Economics: The Alternative To Neoliberal Market-Fundametalist Economics, Tae-Hee Jo

Neoliberalism Seminar

Mainstream-neoclassical economics is the theoretical foundation of neoliberal economic policy that promotes competition and commodification through markets. Increasing fragility of an economy, increasing income inequality, the scaled-back welfare system, and recurring financial crisis are prominent consequences of neoliberal restructuring of industries and the economy as a whole. Is the “law of supply and demand” the universal principle that governs all the economic activities under capitalism? Is there an alternative way of explaining and organizing the provisioning process of a capitalist economy? How can economics deal with such socio-economic problems beyond market-fundamentalist economic narratives? In my presentation, I will highlight heterodox …

Reasoning With Inconsistencies In Hybrid Mknf Knowledge Bases, Shasha Huang, Qingguo Li, Pascal Hitzler Apr 2013

Reasoning With Inconsistencies In Hybrid Mknf Knowledge Bases, Shasha Huang, Qingguo Li, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

This article is concerned with the handling of inconsistencies occurring in the combination of description logics and rules, especially in hybrid MKNF knowledge bases. More precisely, we present a paraconsistent semantics for hybrid MKNF knowledge bases (called para-MKNF knowledge bases) based on four-valued logic as proposed by Belnap. We also reduce this paraconsistent semantics to the stable model semantics via a linear transformation operator, which shows the relationship between the two semantics and indicates that the data complexity in our paradigm is not higher than that of classical reasoning. Moreover, we provide fixpoint operators to compute paraconsistent MKNF models, each …
