Alpha Diversity And Species Status Of Uneven Forests In Eco-Zones Of Taraba State, Nigeria, Dau Henry Japheth, Joseph A. Ugbe, Jerry I. Alfa
Journal of Bioresource Management
Alpha diversity indices quantify the uncertainty in predicting the species identity of an individual. Quantitative indices on species composition and distribution are vital to understanding the trend and species status of an ecosystem for conservation management. However, among the forest ecosystems in Taraba state, Bakin Dutse and Wasaji uneven forests are one of the least studied areas, especially in terms of tree species status. This research work aims at assessing alpha diversity and species status of selected uneven forests in Taraba state, Nigeria; to provide baseline knowledge for conservation management. In total, 102 tree species from 74 genera and 41 …

Homeostatic Synaptic Plasticity Of Miniature Excitatory Postsynaptic Currents In Mouse Cortical Cultures Requires Neuronal Rab3a, Andrew G. Koesters, Mark M. Rich, Kathrin L. Engisch
Homeostatic Synaptic Plasticity Of Miniature Excitatory Postsynaptic Currents In Mouse Cortical Cultures Requires Neuronal Rab3a, Andrew G. Koesters, Mark M. Rich, Kathrin L. Engisch
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Following prolonged activity blockade, amplitudes of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) increase, a form of homeostatic plasticity termed “synaptic scaling.” We previously showed that a presynaptic protein, the small GTPase Rab3A, is required for full expression of the increase in miniature endplate current amplitudes following prolonged blockade of action potential activity at the mouse neuromuscular junction in vivo (Wang et al., 2011), but it is unknown whether this form of Rab3A-dependent homeostatic plasticity shares any characteristics with central synapses. We show here that synaptic scaling of mEPSCs is impaired in mouse cortical neuron cultures prepared from Rab3A-/- and Rab3A Earlybird …

Morphology And Hemodynamics Of Cerebral Arteries And Aneurysms In A Rare Pair Of Monozygotic Twins, Hang Yi, Zifeng Yang, Luke C. Bramlage, Bryan R. Ludwig
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
In this preliminary study, the underlying pathophysiology mechanisms of cerebral aneurysms (CAs) in monozygotic twins (MTs) were investigated via a rare pair of MTs (twin A and twin B) involving four reconstructed arterial models using preclinical information. First, dimensions and configurated outlines of three-perspective geometries were compared. Adopting an in-vitro validated numerical CA model, hemodynamic characteristics were investigated in the MTs, respectively. Despite expected genetic similarities, morphological comparisons show that configurations of cerebral arteries exhibit significant differences between the twins. The ICA size of twin A is larger than that in twin B (2.23~25.86%), varying with specific locations, attributing to …
A Multi-Method Approach To Work Design For Crew In Future Remotely Piloted Aircraft Operations, Kayler Marshall, Penelope Sanderson, Andrew Neal
A Multi-Method Approach To Work Design For Crew In Future Remotely Piloted Aircraft Operations, Kayler Marshall, Penelope Sanderson, Andrew Neal
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
Globally, most safety regulators only allow crew to operate one remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) at a time due to workload concerns. More sophisticated automation is anticipated to alleviate operator workload, allowing crew to simultaneously operate more than one RPA. However, how work should be distributed amongst crew is still unknown. We employ a complementary set of methods for work design in a future system of RPA operation: Cognitive Work Analysis, computational modelling, and human-in-the-loop experiments. In this paper we describe each method, outlining the unique insights gained and how these are applied in the evaluation of work in a future …
The Viability Of See-And-Avoid For Urban Air Mobility Operations, Richard Mogford, Walter Johnson
The Viability Of See-And-Avoid For Urban Air Mobility Operations, Richard Mogford, Walter Johnson
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is an emerging aviation concept that could supplement today’s ground and air transportation systems. For UAM, it is generally assumed that the private sector will manage separation and not rely on the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control system. To date, discussions of initial operations focus on using the visual abilities of the pilot to see-and-avoid (SAA) other aircraft. Decades of research on SAA has demonstrated that it is inadequate for reliable detection of aircraft that might pose a collision risk. The literature on multi-object tracking is also reviewed for findings on how well humans …

Airport Personnel Perceptions Of Airport Environmental Programs, Navya Nikhita Agasam, Deborah S. Carstens
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
Aviation is a rapidly growing industry that is believed to account for 25% of the carbon footprint by 2050 (Graver et al., 2019, as cited in Alfaro, V.N. & Chankov, S., 2022). Countries are making environmentally friendly changes to save the earth. Humans are the think tanks of any process. Airport personnel should consider implementing these changes. By considering the complex and dynamic nature of human beings, this study uses a survey approach to understand the attitudes and behavior of airport personnel in the transition towards airport environmental programs. The study focuses on factors influencing human behavior and their willingness …

Can You Hear Me? Simultaneous Masking Between The Stars Air Traffic Control Alarms, Corey Hall, Elliot Biltekoff, Matthew L. Bolton
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
The Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) was introduced to eliminate unnecessary Air Traffic Control (ATC) alarms and reduce air traffic controller confusion about alarms. The six STARS alarms are tonal melodies. Because of this, they are susceptible to simultaneous masking: where a tone cannot be heard in the presence of other sounds due to limitations of the human sensory system. This work used a proof-based computational method to analyze the STARS alarms to determine if any masking is possible. Our results found three instances where alarms could be partially masked (have part of their signal made inaudible) by other …

Psychophysiological Research Methods To Assess Airline Flight Crew Resilient Performance In High-Fidelity Flight Simulation Scenarios, Chad L. Stephens, Tyler D. Fettrow, Lawrence J. Prinzel Iii, Jon B. Holbrook, Kathryn M. Ballard
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
New concepts in aviation system safety thinking have emerged to consider not only what may go wrong, but also what can be learned when things go right. This approach forms a more comprehensive approach to system safety thinking. A need exists for methods to enable a better understanding of human contributions to aviation safety and how they may inform Safety Management Systems (SMS). A high-fidelity 737-800 simulation study was conducted to study how current type-rated commercial airline flight crews anticipate, monitor, respond to, and learn from expected and unexpected disturbances during line operations. A number of dependent measures were collected …

Heart failure is a syndrome which occurs when the heart is not able to pump blood and oxygen to support other organs in the body. Identifying the underlying themes in the diagnostic codes and procedure reports of patients admitted for heart failure could reveal the clinical phenotypes associated with heart failure and to group patients based on their similar characteristics which could also help in predicting patient outcomes like length of stay. These clinical phenotypes usually have a probabilistic latent structure and hence, as there has been no previous work on identifying phenotypes in clinical notes of heart failure patients …

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
In this work, we propose a sustainable path-finding application for grain transportation during the ongoing Russian military invasion in Ukraine. This application is to build a suite of algorithms to find possible optimal paths for transporting grain that remains in Ukraine. The application uses the KNowledge Acquisition and Representation Methodology(KNARM) and the KnowWhereGraph to achieve this goal. Currently, we are working towards creating an ontology that will allow for a more effective heuristic approach by incorporating the lessons learned from the KnowWhereGraph. The aim is to enhance the path-finding process and provide more accurate and efficient results. In the future, …

Improving students’ use of argumentation is front and center in the increasing emphasis on scientific practice in K-12 Science and STEM programs. We explore the construct validity of scenario-based assessments of claim-evidence-reasoning (CER) and the structure of the CER construct with respect to a learning progression framework. We also seek to understand how middle school students progress. Establishing the purpose of an argument is a competency that a majority of middle school students meet, whereas quantitative reasoning is the most difficult, and the Rasch model indicates that the competencies form a unidimensional hierarchy of skills. We also find no evidence …

ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a neurodegenerative disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function. The C9 Gene is responsible for creating proteins that help neurons send and receive signals across the synapse. Small Conductance calcium activated potassium channels (SK channels) affect the hyperpolarization phase of an action potential. Hypothesis: SK2 and SK3 clusters of C9 positive cells should decrease in size and intensity when exposed to a disease state compared to C9 negative controls.

The inventory of the carabid family at two forest sites in the Belezma national park namely an oak grove site and a cedar site during a period ranging from May 2017 to April 2018, has shown the counting of 27 taxa that have been inventoried by Barber pitfall traps. The results showed that the Quercus ilex site has slightly more species (25 species) compared to the Cedrus atlantica one (23 species). However, the Harpalinae subfamily is quantitatively the better one represented at both sites. The Shannon and Simpson indices report slightly higher figures in the Cedrus atlantica site with respectively …
