Evaluating Human Rights In Africa: Some Problems Of Implicit Comparisons, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Since the 1970s, many humanistically minded academics have become concerned with the comparative measurement and analysis of human rights. The new concern is partly a result of the introduction of human rights as a subject of United Nations debates and foreign policy deliberations, especially in the United States during the Carter Administration (1977–81). Frequently, on the intergovernmental and national levels, the debate is nothing more than a new means of rhetoric, with an additional patina of moral concern, for asserting a nation-state’s normal national security interests.

This article follows upon an earlier article ('Preaching: where we've been', Consensus 8,3-11 Ja 82). Developments in communication, technology, hermeneutics and myth directed preaching to understand itself as 'event' and therefore to shape itself as 'story'. The narrative form can carry the varied and contradictory realities and mysteries of life as no rational 'system' can, and is true to the prime genre of the Bible. While the work of keener definition remains to be done, narrative preaching demonstrates the power to give people a better 'story to live by'.

Throughout the history of Judah a series of fortification systems was constructed to assist in the military protection of Judah. These systems changed over time in order to meet the military and political situations then present in the Levant. This thesis is a study of the changing patterns of fortification in southwest Judah throughout its existence.
Prior to the time of Rehoboam, Israel and Judah were protected first by the mobile armies of Saul and David and later by four major centers which garrisoned the troops of Solomon. Additional Solomonic fortification was erected for internal usage in what became known …

The thesis undertakes an examination of certain Soviet problems which upon analysis serve to support the views of publicists such as Richard Nixon, Richard Pipes, Edward Luttwak, Paul Nitze, and Eugene Rostow. These experts argue that the Soviet Union is bent on a course of world hegemony. The objective of the thesis is to determine if the Soviet leadership is under lateral pressure to expand. Two proportions underline the broad theme of the thesis: that the Soviet Union is the de facto Russian empire, with the same concerns, i.e. stability and Russian domination; that real arms restraint on the part …

This thesis deals with the building program pursued by Herod the Great. It begins with a short historical summary and a description of the main features of Herodian style architecture. There is a catalogue of all of Herod’s known buildings in Judaea, and a short list of his works outside his own country. The constructions within Judaea are analyzed according to structure type, and Herod’s motivations examined. There is an extensive bibliography arranged by site.

This thesis attempts to analyze the problematic nature of Canada’s defence policy by utilizing general systems theory as the prime method of inquiry. While much of the existing literature on Canadian defence policy is of a singular or partial nature, there is a need for a more holistic approach to the study of defence policy.
General systems theory, being a normative theory with a scientific base, assumes a holistic approach while offering explanations in behavioural phenomena as well as indicating possible future conditions.

Economic Imperialism And Oligopolization Of Trade In The Gold Coast: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

This article will deal with the mechanisms of the economic takeover of the Gold Coast, between approximately 1885 and 1939. Two aspects of the takeover are dealt with: the progressive oligopolization of trading, shipping, and banking in the colony, and the influence which oligopolistic British firms exerted on government policy. The oligopolization resulted in the underdevelopment of the African trading class and its inability to develop into a genuine capitalist class; while the pursuance of a government policy dedicated to maintaining Ghana's role as a peripheral import-export economy resulted in the internal economic underdevelopment of the colony.
