Experiences Of Adults Abused As Children After Discharge From Inpatient Treatment: Informal Social Support And Self-Care Practices Related To Trauma Recovery, Carol A. Stalker, Kim Harper, Sally Palmer, Susan Gadbois

Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications

This qualitative study explored adults’ perceptions of experiences that were helpful and unhelpful to their recovery from the traumatic effects of childhood physical and sexual abuse. The authors conducted in-depth interviews with 30 participants approximately 6 months after discharge from an inpatient trauma treatment program. Participants reported that barriers to recovery postdischarge were lack of follow-up support immediately after discharge, social isolation, lack of friends, problems with partners, and lack of emotional support from family members. Facilitating factors were concrete support from family and friends; emotional support, particularly from friends; developing a social network unrelated to the abuse history; and …

Commmonplaces On Preaching Among Commonplaces For Preaching? The Topic Predicacio In Thomas Of Ireland's Manipulus Florum, Chris L. Nighman

History Faculty Publications

Focusing on several passages from Thomas's Preface to this influential florilegium, the author proposes that it was not intended as a resource for sermon composition, as previously thought, but rather as a collection of authoritative quotations to be used by university students for the purpose of self-formation. While the evidence for its reception as a preaching aid indicates the importance of the entire text of the Manipulus for scholars of late medieval and early modem sermons, it is argued that thefifty-ftve quotations …

Community Pastoral Care In Faith And Light: A Qualitative Study Of Perpetual Parenthood From A Pastoral Care And Counselling Perspective, Timothy William Dobbin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Faith and Light is a Christian community that exists for people with an intellectual disability, their families and their friends, and that meets monthly to reflect on Scripture, to pray and to celebrate together. It promotes presence to one another and friendship amongst its members. This ethnographic study explored how parents from a local community experienced the "launching" phase of the family life cycle. Analysis of data from focus groups, from participant observation as a chaplain, and from informal interviews revealed particular aspects of parents experiences, including: challenges parents face, particularly with regard abuse and the need to advocate; concerns …

Pastoral Visitation Of The Sick: Reflections Of A Japanese Pastor, Kazuhito Yamada

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This project was designed to show the importance of the pastor’s role and actions in visiting the sick. The study is focused mainly on pastoral visitation to hospitalized patients. Interpreting the written texts of pastoral theologians and the research reports on pastoral care and practice in professional journals. I consider the pastor‘s important role as the representative of God and the symbolic nature of the pastor's role. On this basis, I discuss the pastor‘s actions in visiting the hospitalized patients.
