Elections, Wars, And Protests? A Longitudinal Look At Foreign News On Canadian Television, Abby Goodrum, Elizabeth Godo
Elections, Wars, And Protests? A Longitudinal Look At Foreign News On Canadian Television, Abby Goodrum, Elizabeth Godo
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study reports on the Canadian data from a recent international content analysis of broadcast news in 18 countries. With a mind to Robert A. Hackett’s longitudinal analysis of foreign news on CBC and CTV in 1989, the current study addresses questions of foreign news prominence, geographic distribution, topic coverage, and variation between networks, noting differences and similarities in the content of foreign news in light of shifting cultural, political, and economic environments; news production processes; and communication technologies. This analysis provides an update to Hackett’s seminal work, painting a picture of the Canadian foreign news landscape two decades later.
Climate Services To Support Sustainable Tourism And Adaptation To Climate Change, D.J. Scott, Christopher J. Lemieux, Leslie Malone
Climate Services To Support Sustainable Tourism And Adaptation To Climate Change, D.J. Scott, Christopher J. Lemieux, Leslie Malone
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Tourism is one of the largest global economic sectors, is a vital contributor to the economy of many nations, and is highly promoted as an important means of future development and poverty reduction in developing countries. The interface between climate and tourism is multifaceted and complex, with broad significance for tourist decision-making and expenditures, as well as industry marketing and operations worldwide. With the close relationship of tourism to the environment and climate, the integrated effects of climate change are anticipated to markedly affect tourism businesses and destinations, as well as the destination choices and mobility of individual tourists in …
Examining Experiences Of English Literacy Development (Eld) Program From Multiple Stakeholders’ Perspectives, Hany Ibraham
Examining Experiences Of English Literacy Development (Eld) Program From Multiple Stakeholders’ Perspectives, Hany Ibraham
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The present study, conducted in collaboration with a public school board in southern Ontario, Canada, focused on stakeholders’ perspectives of an English Literacy Development (ELD) program offered in secondary schools within this particular board. The purpose of this research was to identify resources that would help address school absenteeism, credit accumulation and graduation needs of ELD learners, as well as to learn which factors in ELD better assist students who are refugees with school integration and in reaching their academic potentials. The research objectives were (1) to identify factors that influence integration of refugee students in school and (n) to …
The Internalization Of Mathematics Stereotypes In Elementary School Children, Amanda Schell
The Internalization Of Mathematics Stereotypes In Elementary School Children, Amanda Schell
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This study investigated mathematics-related gender stereotypes, internalization of these stereotypes in 2nd and 5th grade children, and whether there is a relationship between internalization and the underperformance of girls in mathematics. There is evidence that gender stereotype internalization occurs throughout elementary school with an increasing impact on girls’ mathematical competence and performance (e.g., Muzzatti & Agnoli, 2007). However, there has been no definite determination with respect to the point at which this process begins. Parents and teachers have displayed gender stereotypical beliefs concerning children as young as three years of age (Lee & Schell, under review). This factor can influence …
Issue 01: Backgrounder On Health And Safety For Migrant Farmworkers In Canada, Janet Mclaughlin, Jenna Hennebry
Issue 01: Backgrounder On Health And Safety For Migrant Farmworkers In Canada, Janet Mclaughlin, Jenna Hennebry
International Migration Research Centre
Annually, approximately 30,000 migrant farmworkers come to work across Canada from countries such as Mexico, Jamaica, Guatemala, the Philippines and Thailand through Canada’s Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) and the Pilot Project for Occupations Requiring Lower Levels of Formal Training (NOC C and D). Their health and safety has long been a neglected area of research, but several recent studies have now shed light on some important issues of concern. Despite these studies’ diverse contexts (Ontario and British Columbia) and methods (quantitative questionnaires and qualitative ethnography) the similar findings in each study demonstrate consistent patterns. The purpose of this backgrounder …
Comparison Of Algorithms And Parameterisations For Infiltration Into Organic-Covered Permafrost Soils, Yinsou Zhang, Sean K. Carey, William L. Quinton, J. Richard Janowicz, John W. Pomeroy, Gerald N. Flerchinger
Comparison Of Algorithms And Parameterisations For Infiltration Into Organic-Covered Permafrost Soils, Yinsou Zhang, Sean K. Carey, William L. Quinton, J. Richard Janowicz, John W. Pomeroy, Gerald N. Flerchinger
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Infiltration into frozen and unfrozen soils is critical in hydrology, controlling active layer soil water dynamics and influencing runoff. Few Land Surface Models (LSMs) and Hydrological Models (HMs) have been developed, adapted or tested for frozen conditions and permafrost soils. Considering the vast geographical area influenced by freeze/thaw processes and permafrost, and the rapid environmental change observed worldwide in these regions, a need exists to improve models to better represent their hydrology.
In this study, various infiltration algorithms and parameterisation methods, which are commonly employed in current LSMs and HMs were tested against detailed measurements at three sites in Canada’s …
