Clinical Care Of Masters Athletes: A Health Needs Assessment, Princess A. Ulona Feb 2024

Clinical Care Of Masters Athletes: A Health Needs Assessment, Princess A. Ulona

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Little is known about the current state of clinical care that Masters Athletes (MAs) receive, their perceptions, and whether they meet their health needs. A 22-item online health needs assessment (HNA) survey was conducted to investigate the characteristics of clinical care received by MAs and determine their perceived health needs. 80 MAs completed our survey. In assessing three key categories of care, less than 40% of MAs reported receiving Pre-Participation Evaluation (PPE), Medical Monitoring, and Injury Management as part of their standard routine care. Dissatisfied MAs reported unmet needs due to a lack of educated clinicians, lack of accessibility to …

The Impact Of Access To Oral Health Care On Inadequate Oral Health And Multimorbidity, Luis Limo Aug 2023

The Impact Of Access To Oral Health Care On Inadequate Oral Health And Multimorbidity, Luis Limo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The connection between oral health and other non-communicable chronic conditions—commonly referred in the dental literature as the oral-systemic health connection—emphasizes the role of oral health care on both oral diseases and chronic conditions, particularly in vulnerable populations like the elderly. This thesis comprises 2 studies: the first is a systematic review on the impact of oral health care interventions, as an indicator of access to oral health care, on chronic conditions of which their co-existence would result in multimorbidity; the second study is a cross-sectional investigation of the associations between oral health, access to oral health care, and multimorbidity among …

Examining Age-Related Enhancement Of Multisensory Gain: The Role Of Sensory Decline And Inverse Effectiveness, Laura C. Schneeberger Aug 2023

Examining Age-Related Enhancement Of Multisensory Gain: The Role Of Sensory Decline And Inverse Effectiveness, Laura C. Schneeberger

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Older adults experience a greater benefit from multisensory integration than their younger counterparts, but it is unclear why. One hypothesis is that age-related sensory decline weakens unisensory stimulus effectiveness, producing a boost in multisensory gain through inverse effectiveness. Many previous studies present stimuli at the same intensity for both younger and older adults (i.e., stimulus-matched), as opposed to accounting for each participant’s unique perceptual ability (i.e., perception-matched). This makes it difficult to discern the source of age-related differences in multisensory gain. Through a combination of stimulus-matched and perception-matched tasks, I found that older adults exhibit enhanced multisensory gain at low …

Investigating The Roles Of The Dorsal And Ventral Striatum In Humor Comprehension And Appreciation Throughout Health, Aging, And Parkinson’S Disease, Maggie Prenger Aug 2023

Investigating The Roles Of The Dorsal And Ventral Striatum In Humor Comprehension And Appreciation Throughout Health, Aging, And Parkinson’S Disease, Maggie Prenger

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Humor processing is thought to involve two distinct components. The first, humor comprehension, involves detecting and resolving incongruities that are present within a humorous stimulus. This is related to cognitive processes such as ambiguity resolution, response inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, functions that are mediated in part by the dorsal portion of the striatum (DS). Humor appreciation, on the other hand, refers to the subjective amusement and mirth that one experiences in response to a joke. This is related to reward processing, which implicates the ventral portion of the striatum (VS). Across three separate studies, we investigated the involvement …

The Effect Of Postural Perturbations On Cardiovascular And Skeletal Muscle Function In Healthy Adults, Patrick Siedlecki Dec 2022

The Effect Of Postural Perturbations On Cardiovascular And Skeletal Muscle Function In Healthy Adults, Patrick Siedlecki

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Maintenance of standing balance is vital to daily living. Traditionally, perspectives on maintaining balance are achieved through the study of visual, vestibular and somatosensory inputs on motor outputs. While evidence suggests cardiovascular regulation also functions to assist postural control during orthostatic stress, how the cardiovascular system responds to postural perturbations is not well established. This dissertation includes four studies that investigated the effects of postural perturbations on the cardiovascular system and skeletal muscle responses in healthy adults. All of the studies involved exposing standing participants to surface-translation perturbations at different velocities, with known or unknown timing, and occurred while spontaneously …

The Role Of The Hippocampus In Pattern Separation And Statistical Learning, Helena Shizhe Wang Oct 2022

The Role Of The Hippocampus In Pattern Separation And Statistical Learning, Helena Shizhe Wang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

It has been theorized that pattern separation and statistical learning implicate two separate circuitries within the hippocampus, one that involves the dentate gyrus subregion and one that does not, respectively. Here, we tested whether the two processes are dissociable computations that rely on separate neural pathways by examining the effect of healthy aging (Chapter 2) and dentate gyrus lesion (Chapter 3) on participants’ ability to differentiate similar trisyllabic words and extract trisyllabic words from a continuous speech stream. Neither healthy aging nor dentate gyrus damage affected the implicit expression of statistical learning, but they both impaired pattern separation and the …

The goal of this study was to share the stories of older adults with age-related vision loss (ARVL) and how they have coped to maintain meaningful occupational engagement. Grounded in a constructivist paradigm, data collection and analysis were guided by the narrative inquiry methodology. The participants consisted of six older adults aged 60 or older, diagnosed with one of the following ARVL conditions: macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and/or glaucoma. Participants were recruited from vision loss non-profit organizations such as the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and the Alliance for Equity of Blind Canadians (AEBC). One older adult was …

Nursing Homes And Loneliness Among Older Adults In The United States, Camila Iciaszczyk Nov 2021

Nursing Homes And Loneliness Among Older Adults In The United States, Camila Iciaszczyk

MA Research Paper

Many studies have revealed that older adults experience varying rates of loneliness depending on their living arrangements, yet few have been measured in nursing homes. I assess rates of loneliness among aging adults across different living arrangements, including nursing homes. Analyzing nationally representative longitudinal survey data from the United States, I observe older adults in all living arrangements and whether the transition into nursing homes is linked with increased rates of loneliness. Findings indicate that older adults living in nursing homes are at a 3.0 higher odds of experiencing loneliness compared to those living independently. When controlling for demographic and …

The Effects Of Resistance Training On Cognition And Brain Health In Older Adults At Risk For Diabetes: A Pilot Feasibility Study, Joyla Furlano Nov 2021

The Effects Of Resistance Training On Cognition And Brain Health In Older Adults At Risk For Diabetes: A Pilot Feasibility Study, Joyla Furlano

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Type 2 diabetes is associated with neurocognitive deficits and increased risk for dementia, with high prevalence of diabetes occurring in old age. There are many known risk factors for diabetes, including physical inactivity, obesity, and prediabetes. Studies show that individuals who are at risk for diabetes (i.e., have one or more risk factors) already experience some brain deficits seen in diabetes. One way to combat these deficits is aerobic exercise; however, the effects of resistance exercise in this population are relatively unknown. The objectives of this thesis were to report on the current evidence of brain deficits in prediabetes, and …

Neural Markers Of Musical Memory In Young And Older Adults, Avital Sternin Sep 2021

Neural Markers Of Musical Memory In Young And Older Adults, Avital Sternin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Memory for music can be preserved in the presence of neurodegenerative disorders even when other memories are forgotten. However, understanding how the brain remembers music has proven difficult despite decades of research. The central goal of this thesis was to elucidate the neural correlates of musical memory by exploring how the presence of language and music information affect the way young and older adults remember music. To that end, I 1) used a controlled training paradigm to familiarize participants with novel stimuli that manipulated the presence of language and music, and 2) collected functional magnetic resonance imaging data to compare …

Protein Misfolding Toxicity And Inclusion Formation In Cellular Models Of Neurodegeneration, Sonja E. Di Gregorio Apr 2021

Protein Misfolding Toxicity And Inclusion Formation In Cellular Models Of Neurodegeneration, Sonja E. Di Gregorio

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Protein misfolding characterizes most neurodegenerative diseases. Protein misfolding is the conversion of specific proteins from their normal, often soluble, and native three-dimensional conformation into an aberrant, often insoluble, non-functional conformation. Protein inclusions and aggregates are among the major pathological hallmarks of protein misfolding associated with many neurodegenerative diseases. Yet, the role of aggregates and inclusions is not clearly defined and heavily debated. This study utilizes powerful genetic approaches in yeast and verification in mammalian neuronal cell lines to address the misfolding and toxicity of three proteins, the Rho Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor (RGNEF), Matrin3, which are involved in amyotrophic lateral …

Intersectional Social Inequalities And Cognitive Functioning Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults In England: A Decomposition Analysis Of The Mediating Role Of Loneliness, Chantel Walwyn Dec 2020

Intersectional Social Inequalities And Cognitive Functioning Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults In England: A Decomposition Analysis Of The Mediating Role Of Loneliness, Chantel Walwyn

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Normative cognitive decline is an emerging public health issue for older adult populations. It is necessary that we take an intersectional approach to examining heterogeneity in cognitive health outcomes. Using complex longitudinal survey data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), multiple linear regression models were used to examine the relationship between intersectional group membership based on age, education, and sex, and change in cognitive functioning domains (memory function, and executive function) over an 8-year period. Three-way decomposition analysis was also used to examine the mediating effect of loneliness on the association between intersectional group membership and the change …

Comparing Neuromuscular System Function In Healthy And Mobility-Impaired Older Females, Neal B. Mckinnon Dec 2020

Comparing Neuromuscular System Function In Healthy And Mobility-Impaired Older Females, Neal B. Mckinnon

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Objectives: The objective of this thesis was to evaluate and compare neuromuscular system function in a group of young, healthy old and mobility-impaired older females (gait speed less than 1m/s) in an attempt to identify which neuromuscular factors contribute most to the loss of mobility and functional performance with age.

Methods: The ankle dorsiflexor and knee extensor muscles were used as a model in these studies. First, in Chapter 2 quantitative electromyography (EMG) was used to evaluate motor unit (MU) numbers, properties and the fidelity of the neuromuscular junction. Next, Chapter 3 conducted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine contractile …

The Effect Of Mtor Inhibitor Rapamycin On A Dietary Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Calcium Oxalate Nephrolithiasis, Michael T. Pignanelli Nov 2020

The Effect Of Mtor Inhibitor Rapamycin On A Dietary Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Calcium Oxalate Nephrolithiasis, Michael T. Pignanelli

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Impaired cellular tolerance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been suggested as a common mechanistic link associated with aging in both metabolic syndrome and nephrolithiasis. The mechanistic (mammalian) target of rapamycin (mTOR) activity is characteristic of metabolic syndrome. When nutrients are abundant, mTOR is active. Conversely, fasting inhibits mTOR. Metabolic syndrome is correlated with an increased risk of self-reported or imaging findings of nephrolithiasis. At the individual level, patients with a higher BMI have an increased prevalence of recurrent symptomatic nephrolithiasis, 24-hour urinary excretion of oxalate, sodium, uric acid, calcium, and phosphorous as well as lower pH. Calcium oxalate crystals …

Energy Access And Extreme Heat Events: A Case Study Of Seniors In Ottawa, Ontario, Samantha N. Doris Nov 2020

Energy Access And Extreme Heat Events: A Case Study Of Seniors In Ottawa, Ontario, Samantha N. Doris

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Energy poverty, or not having access to sufficient energy to meet one’s needs, is a serious problem in Canada and around the world. While the current literature on energy poverty largely focuses on the experiences of people utilizing energy services to stay warm during cold winter temperatures, little is known about experiences of energy poverty during summertime heat. This gap is especially urgent since current climate models suggest that cities are likely to experience extreme heat conditions more frequently in the future. This research investigates how people use energy services, such as air conditioning and fans, among other strategies to …

Social Isolation: Do Helpers Help Ward It Off?, Kirsten Young Brown Oct 2020

Social Isolation: Do Helpers Help Ward It Off?, Kirsten Young Brown

MA Research Paper

Social isolation is particularly relevant among elderly individuals who are more likely to need care and help with their physical and living needs. Little is known about whether receiving help correlates with social isolation in older adults living at home as often there is no focus from caregivers and helpers on older adults' social needs. Using data from the 2018 US National Health and Aging Trends Study, a sample of adults aged 65 plus on Medicare/Medicaid (N=4,321), I examine the relationship between social isolation and help. I estimate ordinary least squares regression models to test the association between receiving help …

Feasibility Of Dual-Task Gait Assessment And Association With Cognitive Impairment Subtypes In A Memory Clinic Setting, Stephanie Cullen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The objectives of this thesis were 1) to assess feasibility and practicality of gait performance to help differentiate cognitive diagnoses, 2) to assess differences in gait speed and dual-task gait cost across the cognitive spectrum, and 3) to determine if poor baseline gait performance is associated with future cognitive decline, all within a clinical setting. Patients at the Aging Brain and Memory Clinic completed gait assessment, consisting of a usual gait trial and three dual-task gait trials, in addition to cognitive and clinical assessments. Patients who had two clinic visits during the study period were also included in a longitudinal …

Regulation Of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sarah R. Chadwick Apr 2020

Regulation Of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sarah R. Chadwick

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used extensively to uncover the genetic mechanisms that control basic cellular processes, including survival, maintenance, and response to stressors. One metric of yeast survival is chronological lifespan (CLS), which is the amount of time non-dividing yeast cells can survive at stationary phase. Variations in CLS following genetic alteration are used to understand the function of specific genes and pathways in cellular aging. Many factors contribute to aging, including accumulation of toxic misfolded secretory proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER stress), to which the cell responds through activation of ER stress signaling pathways, such …

The Relationship Between Theory Of Mind And Executive Function: Are They Two Facets Of The Same Process Or Two Distinct Processes?, Isu Cho Jan 2020

The Relationship Between Theory Of Mind And Executive Function: Are They Two Facets Of The Same Process Or Two Distinct Processes?, Isu Cho

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation examines the relationship between Theory of Mind (ToM) and Executive Function (EF). There has been debate on whether ToM and EF are two facets of the same process or are two distinct processes. Distinguishing between these possibilities empirically is challenging because the two abilities have similar developmental timetables and ToM tasks typically place high demands on EF, with the consequence that ToM and EF performance measures may be artificially correlated. Three experiments explored the nature of this relationship. Experiments 1 and 2 tested whether socio-cultural factors known to influence individual differences in EF (i.e., bilingualism, country-of-origin) extend to …

Investigating The Role Of Pannexin 3 In Intervertebral Disc Health And Disease, Meaghan E. Serjeant Jul 2018

Investigating The Role Of Pannexin 3 In Intervertebral Disc Health And Disease, Meaghan E. Serjeant

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Pannexin 3 (Panx3) is a mechanosensitive, channel-forming glycoprotein implicated in the progression of post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Despite evidence for Panx3 expression in intervertebral discs (IVDs), its function here remained unknown. Using Panx3-/- mice, this study investigated the role of Panx3 in age-associated and injury-induced models of IVD degeneration. While loss of Panx3 did not significantly impact the progression of age-associated IVD degeneration, it was associated with a protective phenotype in an injury model of IVD degeneration, specifically in the annulus fibrosus (AF). Following IVD injury, WT mice showed an accumulation of enlarged cells that appeared to contribute to disrupted AF …

Assessing Cognitive Function In Chronic Sport-Related Head Impacts And Aging, Danielle Brewer-Deluce May 2018

Assessing Cognitive Function In Chronic Sport-Related Head Impacts And Aging, Danielle Brewer-Deluce

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Healthy normal aging and cumulative head trauma (concussion and subconcussion), can influence cognition independently and concomitantly leading to substantial late-life cognitive impairments (e.g., as seen in increased rates of dementia). With this as motivation, this dissertation explores three aspects of aging, head injury and cognition using the Cambridge Brain Sciences (CBS) cognitive battery (www.cambridgebrainsciences.com).

Study 1 (Chapter 2): Concussion-specific testing combines assessments from multiple domains to evaluate a variety of functions. While clinically relevant, their succinct nature limits the amount of cognitive information available. Eighteen male football athletes were examined at baseline using the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) 3, …

Effective Boronizing Process For Age Hardened Inconel 718, Aria Khalili Apr 2017

Effective Boronizing Process For Age Hardened Inconel 718, Aria Khalili

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Boronizing or boriding is a technique to mitigate wear damage in industrial valves made of age-hardenable Inconel® 718 which is a nickel-based superalloy. Boriding involves immersing the part in a patented boron-based compound and heating over 800 oC.

Boriding combined with aging has a detrimental thermal effect and was the subject of this investigation. The effects on hardness, wear and grain size, of boriding and aging separately, subsequently, and simultaneously, were investigated to observe the microstructure and mechanical properties.

The results show that boriding has negligible effect on the grain size and the hardness of the substrate. Besides, …

The Effect Of Age On Social Behaviour In Drosophila Melanogaster And The Progeny Of Aged Parents, Dova Brenman Jan 2017

The Effect Of Age On Social Behaviour In Drosophila Melanogaster And The Progeny Of Aged Parents, Dova Brenman

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Recent studies have linked neuropsychiatric disorders to older parents. These disorders often include changes in social behaviours like the social spacing between neighbouring individuals, which can be modeled in organisms such as Drosophila melanogaster. I investigated the effects of aging on the social space between neighbouring D. melanogaster and how aging impacts the next generation. To achieve this, I used the social space assay and found that individuals become less social with age and that this effect is passed on to the first generation only. Additionally, accelerating the physiological process of aging via increased rearing temperatures or exposure to …

Multi-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of Obstructive Lung Disease, Khadija Sheikh Nov 2016

Multi-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of Obstructive Lung Disease, Khadija Sheikh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Obstructive lung diseases such as chronic-obstructive-lung-disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, and asthma are characterized by airflow obstruction. They affect over six million Canadians costing the economy $12 billion/year. Despite decades of research, therapies that modify obstructive-lung-disease progression and control are lacking because patient diagnosis, monitoring, and response to therapy are currently made using airflow measurements that may conceal the independent contributions of underlying pathologies. One goal of obstructive-lung-disease research is to develop ways to identify patients with specific underlying pathological phenotypes to improve patient care and outcomes. Thoracic computed-tomography (CT) and magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) provide ways to regionally identify the underlying pathologies associated …

Category Learning In Older Adulthood: Understanding And Reducing Age-Related Deficits, Rahel R. Rabi Aug 2016

Category Learning In Older Adulthood: Understanding And Reducing Age-Related Deficits, Rahel R. Rabi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Executive functions are important for learning rule-based (RB) categories, as well as non-rule-based (NRB) categories (e.g., categories learned implicitly, without a verbal rule). However, executive functioning is known to decline with age, leading to age-related deficits in category learning. The current thesis examines RB and NRB category learning in older adults using category sets that vary in difficulty (e.g., rule complexity, number of stimulus dimensions, salience of stimulus dimensions). In Chapter 2, older adults and younger adults completed three category sets (simple single-dimensional RB, disjunctive RB, and NRB). Older adults learned the simple, single-dimensional rules quite well. In contrast to …

The Effects Of Manual Tooth Brushing On Parotid And Submandibular/Sublingual Gland Salivary Flow Rates In Healthy Young And Older Adults, Kristen M. Trottier Aug 2016

The Effects Of Manual Tooth Brushing On Parotid And Submandibular/Sublingual Gland Salivary Flow Rates In Healthy Young And Older Adults, Kristen M. Trottier

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Saliva is crucial for the maintenance of oral health. Individuals with reduced salivary flow may experience a distortion in taste, difficulty swallowing, and impaired articulation of speech. Research has shown that tooth brushing increases whole salivary flow rates in older adults. It is important to determine whether this increase results from the modulation of parotid gland salivary flow, submandibular and sublingual gland salivary flow, or both. Saliva produced from the parotid gland aids in digestive processes, while saliva secreted from the submandibular and sublingual glands promotes protection of the oral cavity. A within-subjects methodology was used to examine the effects …

This thesis is a study of the lived experience of ten older adult alpine ski racers in their continued participation in ski racing. The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the experiences of these older adults as they continued to compete in ski racing. Masters skiers between the ages of 69 and 82 participated in individual interviews lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. Data analysis was completed using van Manen’s phenomenological methods and the visual technique of mind mapping. The major theme that emerged was the importance of being a ski racer to participants’ identities. The …

Genes And Gene Networks Related To Age-Associated Learning Impairments, Raihan Uddin Dec 2015

Genes And Gene Networks Related To Age-Associated Learning Impairments, Raihan Uddin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The incidence of cognitive impairments, including age-associated spatial learning impairment (ASLI), has risen dramatically in past decades due to increasing human longevity. To better understand the genes and gene networks involved in ASLI, data from a number of past gene expression microarray studies in rats are integrated and used to perform a meta- and network analysis. Results from the data selection and preprocessing steps show that for effective downstream analysis to take place both batch effects and outlier samples must be properly removed. The meta-analysis undertaken in this research has identified significant differentially expressed genes across both age and ASLI …

Cardioprotective Role Of The Cholinergic System, Mouhamed Dakroub Dec 2015

Cardioprotective Role Of The Cholinergic System, Mouhamed Dakroub

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The process of aging is an irreversible continuum experienced by all individuals. A large number of physiological transformations occur to the cardiovascular system as one ages. These changes result in increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, many of which are frequently seen in geriatric populations. While the exact mechanisms of age-related cardiac dysfunction have not been established, abnormal cholinergic dysfunction has been implicated in the pathology of other age related diseases; therefore, we have hypothesized that age induced cholinergic dysfunction is detrimental to cardiac function and health. This study seeks to identify whether increased cholinergic signaling, either by transgenic overexpression …
