Diverse representation in picture books is important for the wellbeing of children and families; this includes LGBTQ+ representation, a frequently contested area of literature. Our poster identifies 33 of the most frequently recommended picture books with LGBTQ+ representations and reports on their inclusion in 40 selected Ontario Public Libraries. Background: Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are the leading cause of death for people under the age of 17 years. Almost 80% of rear seat motor vehicle passengers are children. Previous studies have shown that a large fraction of injuries to children in MVCs involved the head and chest. In this study, the hypothesis that children under the age of eight using a forward-facing child restraint system (FFCRS) will have more severe head injuries than children using any other type of restraints in an MVC was tested.

Background: IL-1b is a potent inflammatory cytokine promptly expressed in activated myeloid immune cells. Among various transcription factors, PU.1 and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPa) play a key role in the lineage commitment of myeloid cells. To date, however, the exact mechanisms by which these lineage-determining transcription factors employ to regulate the expression of myeloid-specific genes remains elusive; thus, this study explores the role of PU.1 and C/EBPa in remodelling the chromatin conformation that allows ample production of IL-1b.

Birds that experience variation in climatic conditions must maintain a stable nest temperature during incubation for successful hatching of offspring. Varying nest structure and incubation behaviour may be the methods birds use to regulate nest temperature. We used a modeling approach to investigate how birds adjust incubation behaviour to ambient temperature.

Post-secondary students report high levels of anxiety and depression along with a host of other mental health issues (Fink, 2014). The present study focused on predictors of use of counselling services as well as strategies that would make the service easier to use by undergraduate students. Theoretical rationale included Astin’s Input-Environment-Outcome (I-E-O) (Fink, 2014), Theory of Planned Behaviour (Marsh, 2011), and Self-Regulatory Model (Oexle, 2015). Background: There has been a continuing trend towards decreasing the length of hospital stay for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). Outpatient procedures, discharging patients on the same day as surgery, have now become possible yet little research has been done to examine the impact this might have on patients during early recovery. Starting from the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE) when writing system appeared in China, clothing was recorded as symbols to denote social statuses. The hierarchical signification of clothing remained in the following dynasties until the end of imperial China in 1911. The imperial period produced twenty-five official dynastic histories with rich corpuses on the subject of attire, documenting regulations and prohibitions of detailed dress code, a subject being scarcely studied and treated with assumptions today. Background: This study aims to differentiate two midbrain structures: substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) in patients with early-stage Parkinson’s Disease (PD) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The SNc degenerates earlier in PD causing motor symptoms; whereas, VTA degeneration occurs later leading to non-motor symptoms. Conventionally, the SNc and VTA project to the dorsal and ventral striatum respectively. This research analyses the engagement of Dutch citizens with a migration background in anti-racism activism, specifically activism against the blackface caricature Black Pete. It aims to answer how and why their citizenship is questioned when they become critical participants of civil society, and how this relates to the history of Dutch colonialism, the denial of racism, and the self-image of white Dutch people as ‘good, tolerant, and innocent’ despite evidence to the contrary.

The summer of 2017 saw many fires in Western Canada. Smoke from these fires was transported by winds over to London and was measured using a Lufft CHM15k ceilometer which was installed at the Cronyn Observatory of The University of Western Ontario.

The cloud base height can be calculated by the time taken for the backscatter signal to reach the transmitter while the backscatter effects can be used to determine the atmospheric structure using the principle of light detection and ranging (LiDAR).
