Investigation Of Lipid And Biodiesel Production From Chlorella Vulgaris (Utex 2714) Cultured In Photo-Bioreactors (Spine Title: Lipid & Biodiesel Production From C. Vulgaris Grown On Dairy Effluent), Gureet Singh Chandhok

Digitized Theses

The use of microalgae as feed stock for biodiesel production has been under consideration for a number of years. However the process design always had limitations which were associated with the extraction and the harvesting processes. Biodiesel production from microalgae is an important process component in the microalgal biofuel area. In this project, a method for the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX 2714) on anaerobically digested dairy farm effluent is proposed. The first part of the work provides a study on the feasibility of microalgae cultivation on pre-treated dairy farm effluent. The microalgae were cultivated using 2% (v/v) and 4% …

Metrics And Neatening Of Handwritten Characters, Maria Teresa Infante Velazquez Jan 2010

Metrics And Neatening Of Handwritten Characters, Maria Teresa Infante Velazquez

Digitized Theses

At the present time, with the technology that many portable devices have, pen-based input is widely supported and input can be done through handwriting rather than just by typing. While character recognition and other input issues are the main consideration with these devices, there are many interesting output issues related to digital ink. This thesis investigates the questions of handwriting neatening and personal handwriting fonts. We use the notion of “character metrics”, .which refer to the location and size of various features, such as ascender height and character width. Recording these features for handwritten characters allows for input and output …

Migration, Retention And Dissolution Of A Dnapl In A System Containing Physical And Chemical Porous Medium Spatial Properties, Andrew Oleniuk Jan 2010

Migration, Retention And Dissolution Of A Dnapl In A System Containing Physical And Chemical Porous Medium Spatial Properties, Andrew Oleniuk

Digitized Theses

Contamination of the subsurface environment by chlorinated solvents is a significant issue facing the remediation of sites contaminated with dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). A twodimensional laboratory-scale experiment was used to explore DNAPL migration, retention, and dissolution. Variations in porous medium grain size and wettability were used to jointly explore the impact of heterogeneity on DNAPL behaviour. Migration experiments suggest that porous medium wettability can greatly increase the entrapment of DNAPLs within fine-textured sand lenses. Simulations of DNAPL migration, using different constitutive relationships, suggest that the predictive capabilities of numerical models depend on the predominant wettability of the system. Experimental …

Smoothtcp A Solution For Wireless Multimedia Communication, Md Ashfaqul Islam Jan 2010

Smoothtcp A Solution For Wireless Multimedia Communication, Md Ashfaqul Islam

Digitized Theses

The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has long been the foundation for data communications across the Internet. While it has been very successful in enabling the evolution of the Internet, it does face challenges in dealing with data which is timesensitive, such as in dealing with voice, audio, music, video or television over the Internet. These challenges are particularly noticeable in wireless communication, where interference, shared wireless communication channels and noise provide additional challenges for TCP. These limitations of TCP have not gone unnoticed. Over the past decade a number of different variations of TCP have been introduced or modifications to …

The Case Of Jacques Dupuis: Understanding Difference In Catholic Theology Of Religions, Aaron B.T. Pellerin Jan 2010

The Case Of Jacques Dupuis: Understanding Difference In Catholic Theology Of Religions, Aaron B.T. Pellerin

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines controversies surrounding religious pluralism in recent Roman Catholicism, as represented in particular by the case of Jacques Dupuis, S.J. The thesis argues that a range of divergent assumptions contributed to the positions of the parties involved in Dupuis' censuring. These included the nature of doctrine itself, together with questions of theological epistemology, ecclesiology and soteriology. By comparing Dupuis' position to that of the Magisterium, and also to that of Francis Sullivan, S.J., a clearer picture emerges of how differences on these base levels contributed to the disparate theological positions in evidence in the 2001 Notification concerning Dupuis …

The Design Of An Implantable Transmitter Using Wireless Power Transfer Link, Majid Jalali Far Jan 2010

The Design Of An Implantable Transmitter Using Wireless Power Transfer Link, Majid Jalali Far

Digitized Theses

Nowadays, advances in CMOS technology have made smaller transistors with higher performance possible. This trend towards making transistors with smaller feature sizes and lower supply voltages causes designers to find new structures that are capable of working at low voltages. On the other hand, system on chip and lab on chip techniques now make smaller and lower powered devices that can implement inside the body. Such systems are normally wireless and capable of transferring data to and from the outside body. ’ The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the problems associated with the design and implementation of an …

Mechanisms Of Decorin Inhibition Of Vegf-Stimulated Human Trophoblast Migration And Acquisition Of An Endovascular Phenotype, Neena Lala Jan 2010

Mechanisms Of Decorin Inhibition Of Vegf-Stimulated Human Trophoblast Migration And Acquisition Of An Endovascular Phenotype, Neena Lala

Digitized Theses

The human placenta is a highly invasive tumour-like organ in which fetal-derived trophoblast cells constitute the major cell type. A subpopulation of trophoblast cells, known as extravillous trophoblast, invades the uterine decidua and maternal arteries to establish sufficient fetal-maternal exchange to maintain healthy utero-placental homeostasis. Trophoblast invasion is highly regulated by a variety of factors at the fetal-maternal interface. Decorin is a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan family, produced by the decidua, and is a negative regulator of trophoblast invasiveness. I hypothesized that decorin inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-stimulated endovascular differentiation and migration by interfering with signalling pathways …

Kinematic Properties Of Visually And Haptically Guided Actions, Charles E. Pettypiece Jan 2010

Kinematic Properties Of Visually And Haptically Guided Actions, Charles E. Pettypiece

Digitized Theses

We compared the contribution of the visual and haptic modalities in action and perception tasks. We also investigated whether or not the dissociation between action and perception found in vision can be duplicated in haptics. For both a grasping and perceptual estimation task, performance based on haptics alone showed greater uncertainty than vision alone. When congruent information from both senses was available simultaneously, performance was no different than with vision alone. When conflict was introduced between the senses, however, an influence of haptic cues emerged. Investigation of Weber’s law in haptics revealed that, like vision, the law was upheld in …

Nicotine Has A Direct Effect On Brainstem Startle-Mediating Neurons, Farena S. Pinnock Jan 2010

Nicotine Has A Direct Effect On Brainstem Startle-Mediating Neurons, Farena S. Pinnock

Digitized Theses

Individuals with schizophrenia have impairments in prepulse inhibition of startle (PPI) which correlates with cognitive deficits. Nicotine improves the performance of patients and healthy individuals with PPI deficits on PPI tests. We hypothesized that nicotine directly affect startle-mediating neurons of the caudal pontine recticular nucleus (PnC) of the brainstem using electrophysiological recordings. The data revealed that nicotine (10 pM) increases leak current amplitude, reduces membrane resistance, and depolarizes the resting membrane potential. Nicotine had no significant effect on the EPSC amplitude for neither the trigeminal nor auditory stimulations. All effects were reversed only by a high dose (10 pM) of …

Modulation Of App Processing And Amyloid-P Levels By Human 82-Kda Choline Acetyltransferase, Fatima S. Abji Jan 2010

Modulation Of App Processing And Amyloid-P Levels By Human 82-Kda Choline Acetyltransferase, Fatima S. Abji

Digitized Theses

The 82-kDa isoform of choline acetyltransferase (82-ChAT) is unique to primates and is found in cholinergic cell nuclei. The functional significance of this protein is not well understood. Previous studies showed that nuclear 82-ChAT levels decrease with advancing age, and this is accelerated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The present studies examined the effect of 82-ChAT on amyloid precursor protein (APP) metabolism and amyloid-P (Ap) production. Levels of enzymes involved in processing of APP were examined in human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells and in primary neuronal cultures prepared from cerebral cortex of embryonic APP/PS1 double transgenic mice that serve as a model …

Nicotinic Mechanisms Mediating Prepulse Inhibition Of The Acoustic Startle Response (Spine Title: Nicotinic Mechanisms Mediating Ppi Of The Startle Response), Tyler Kennedy Brown Jan 2010

Nicotinic Mechanisms Mediating Prepulse Inhibition Of The Acoustic Startle Response (Spine Title: Nicotinic Mechanisms Mediating Ppi Of The Startle Response), Tyler Kennedy Brown

Digitized Theses

Prepulse inhibition (PP1) is the attenuation of a startle response brought-on by a non-startling sensory stimulus (prepulse) presented 5-1000ms before the startle-evoking stimulus. It is a measure of sensory gating that is seen disrupted in schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have been implicated in PPI of acoustic startle at both a systemic level and at the level in which the primary startle pathway can receive modulatory input - the caudal pontine reticular nucleus (PnC). This research will help clarify the role that nicotine plays in PPI at both a systemic level and at a level of …

Do Aging Attributions And Familism Influence Long-Term Care Placement Decisions By Spousal Caregivers Of Older Adults?, Lynn Zhu

Digitized Theses

This study examined how informal caregivers made decisions about placing older spouses in long-term care (LTC) facilities. A mixed methods approach was used to collect data from 40 spousal caregivers of community dwelling individuals above the age of 65, using the Aging Perceptions Questionnaire, the Revised Familism Scale and a semi-structured interview. Participants also made decisions for hypothetical vignette characters representing the varying levels of care needed by individuals currently on Ontario’s LTC waitlist. Qualitative and quantitative findings were unclear about the relationship between the attribution of health conditions to aging made by spouses and LTC decisions made for their …

Experimental Analysis Of The Effect Of Porosity And Primary Process Parameters On The Cutting Forces During Micromilling Of Titanium Foams, Mohammadmehdi Abolqhasemi Fakhri Jan 2010

Experimental Analysis Of The Effect Of Porosity And Primary Process Parameters On The Cutting Forces During Micromilling Of Titanium Foams, Mohammadmehdi Abolqhasemi Fakhri

Digitized Theses

Over the recent years, porous titanium foam became a common material in biomedical applications. Since modem near-net shape technologies are still unable to achieve the desired final shape of the end product, secondary machining operations like, for instance, micromilling are currently regarded as viable manufacturing options. However, a significant lack of information exists on micromilling of porous materials. The main goal of this study was to investigate experimentally the extent of correlation between porosity and cutting forces in the context of porous titanium foam micromilling. The porosity-cutting force interplay was assessed by means of statistical metrics and the effect of …

Evaluation Of Physical Activity Participation Among Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease Using The Physical Activity Scale For Individuals With Physical Disabilities, Johanna Jimenez-Pardo

Digitized Theses

Engaging in physical activity is generally thought to be beneficial to individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). There is, however, limited information regarding current rates of physical activity among individuals with PD. The present study had two goals: (1) to evaluate the suitability of the Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities (PASIPD) for the measurement of physical activity within this population; and (2) to evaluate the amount of physical activity engaged in by individuals with PD. The PASIPD was demonstrated to be a reliable and valid assessment of physical activity within this population. Evaluation of PASIPD scores suggests that …

Evaluating The Mechanisms Of Unconjugated Bilirubin Toxicity Through Analysis Of The Disulfide Proteome, Abudi Awaysheh Jan 2010

Evaluating The Mechanisms Of Unconjugated Bilirubin Toxicity Through Analysis Of The Disulfide Proteome, Abudi Awaysheh

Digitized Theses

Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB), the end product of heme catabolism, is an important physiological antioxidant at nMolar concentrations, but becomes a pro-oxidant at pMolar concentrations by causing the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from mitochondria. We employed diagonal redox two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (R2D-PAGE), to separate and identify specific proteins by mass spectrometry and determined the proteomic signature of the disulfide proteome in different subcellular fractions of Hepa lclc7 cells treated with pro-oxidant (50 pM) or antioxidant (70 nM) concentrations of UCB in Hepa lclc7 cells. Our results demonstrate that treating cells with pro-oxidant or antioxidant concentrations of UCB had …

Le Paradoxe Dans Le Roman Québécois Emplois, Formes, Effets, Mirela Nicoleta Parau Jan 2010

Le Paradoxe Dans Le Roman Québécois Emplois, Formes, Effets, Mirela Nicoleta Parau

Digitized Theses

Long-Term Loss Of Paired-Pulse Inhibition Following Early-Life Seizures, Richard Boyce Jan 2010

Long-Term Loss Of Paired-Pulse Inhibition Following Early-Life Seizures, Richard Boyce

Digitized Theses

It was hypothesized that dendritic paired-pulse inhibition in hippocampal CA1, in particular at a long-latency typical of GABAs-receptor mediated inhibition, is disrupted in rats following early-life seizures. To test this, homo- and hetero- synaptic paired-pulse responses in CA1, following CA3 and medial perforant path (MPP) stimulation that excited the proximal and distal apical-dendrites respectively, were recorded -30-65 days following early-life seizures. Two models of early-life seizures were used on male Long- Evans rats: (1) intraperitoneal injection of GABAb receptor antagonist CGP56999A on post-natal day (PND) 15 induced brief, repeated limbic seizures lasting 8-24 hr, and (2) 9 episodes of seizure …

Closed Platforms And Closed Markets: A Theory Of Privately Controlled Technology And Its Status In Canadian Competition Law, Scott Armstrong Jan 2010

Closed Platforms And Closed Markets: A Theory Of Privately Controlled Technology And Its Status In Canadian Competition Law, Scott Armstrong

Digitized Theses

This paper examines whether closed platforms are, or should be, susceptible to review under Canadian competition law. Firms that produce technology components are often also in the business of producing information infrastructure. When a set of technology components is organized into infrastructure, the result is called a “platform”. The platform concept is a powerful tool for explaining how the technical properties of information infrastructure influence its economic properties. This paper proposes a framework to explain a platform's organization and behaviour. Platforms engage at least two markets - a “component market” and a “content market”. A dominant platform provider can "close" …

A Standards And Regulatory Compliance Meta-Model From The Requirements Engineering Perspective, Md Rashed Iqbal Nekvi Jan 2010

A Standards And Regulatory Compliance Meta-Model From The Requirements Engineering Perspective, Md Rashed Iqbal Nekvi

Digitized Theses

For systems engineering projects, the developing organization is often required to demonstrate compliance against myriad of engineering standards and government regulations in order to avoid non-compliance penalties. The standards and regulations, which cross-reference among themselves, are also being referenced by the project contract and requirements. Thus, they collectively form a highly complex interrelationship network where system requirements are a key entity to be dealt with in development projects. To ensure compliance, it is essential to perform requirements engineering (RE) tasks such as i) elicitation of requirements from the applicable standards and regulation; (ii) determine requirements-related traces across related artifacts; (iii) …

Interactive Effects Of Warming And Nitrogen Deposition On Net Ecosystem Co2 Flux In A Temperate Old Field., Min Ku Kim

Digitized Theses

Global warming and increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition are expected to alter the carbon balances of ecosystems over the next century. My study measured net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) in response to warming and nitrogen addition in a temperate old field using open system canopy chambers. Additionally, I assessed the indirect effects of warming and nitrogen addition on NEE caused by changes in aboveground productivity. In both 2009 and 2010, the study system was a net source of carbon, with the highest CO2 efflux during mid-summer. Warming and nitrogen addition did not affect NEE patterns in both years, notwithstanding a significant …

Proprioceptive Matching Supports Online Reaches That Are Refractory To The Induced Roelofs Effect, Bruce David Arthur Craine Jan 2010

Proprioceptive Matching Supports Online Reaches That Are Refractory To The Induced Roelofs Effect, Bruce David Arthur Craine

Digitized Theses

My thesis sought to determine whether the presence of a proprioceptive map influences the degree to which goal-directed reaching movements are “tricked” by a pictorial illusion. To accomplish this objective, participants performed goal-directed reaches in both proprioceptive matching and no-matching conditions to targets embedded in a centered or proximally or distally displaced frame (the so-called induced Roelofs effect: IRE). During the proprioceptive matching condition, participants were instructed to match the location of a visual target with their unseen non-reaching hand. In the no matching condition, participants performed the same reaching response as above, but without the aid of proprioceptive matching …

Tunnel Heading Stability In Sand And Clay, Chaitan Singh Sandhu Jan 2010

Tunnel Heading Stability In Sand And Clay, Chaitan Singh Sandhu

Digitized Theses

In this study, the stability of tunnel headings is assessed using 3-dimensional finite element (FE) analyses. First, new tunnel face stability factors are derived corresponding to limit state or collapse of tunnel headings in homogeneous clay. In addition, stability factors corresponding to limited face displacement are developed for the serviceability condition since large face displacements can cause excessive surface settlements. The stability factors are presented as functions of tunnel cover thickness in design charts, the new factors are compared with some of the published works of Davis et al (1980) and Mair (1979). The second area addressed in this study …

Centrality Within The Peer Group Asa Moderator Of Peer Group Dinfluence On Aggression, Megan P.A. Kinal Jan 2010

Centrality Within The Peer Group Asa Moderator Of Peer Group Dinfluence On Aggression, Megan P.A. Kinal

Digitized Theses

Children’s peer groups influence individual behavior and attitudes through group normative influence, which previously has been assumed to affect all group members . . J. . equally. However, two competing theories suggest that group influence on members may not be uniform. Reciprocal socialization theorists posit that group members who interact with each other more frequently (i.e., central members) will be more influenced by group norms than those who interact less frequently (i.e., peripheral members) as a result of greater opportunity for mutual socialization. Social identity theorists posit that peripheral group members will be more influenced by group norms than central …

Detection And Quantification Of Amplitude Modulation In Wind Turbine Noise Through Envelope Analysis, J. Nicholas Mccabe Jan 2010

Detection And Quantification Of Amplitude Modulation In Wind Turbine Noise Through Envelope Analysis, J. Nicholas Mccabe

Digitized Theses

World interest in power generation from renewable resources has been increasing rapidly in recent years. The rapid increase in the number of wind turbines installed worldwide has dramatically increased the number of people living near to large modern wind turbines. Many common concerns raised about wind turbines are related to the noise produced by their operation. Unwanted noise can cause annoyance in people. Various types of noise are generally acknowledged to be subjectively more annoying than others, and some research suggests that wind turbine noise is more annoying than other types of noise, at similar sound levels. One factor proposed …
