Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Emotional adjustment seems to be a significant factor to consider in the diagnosis and treatment of reading difficulties. This statement is substantiated by a number of studies which have been made to investigate the incidence of emotional disturbances in retarded readers. Misseldine (18) studied the emotional background of thirty children with reading disabilities and concluded that practically all of the children tested were "insecure," "restless," and "emotionally ill." A study by Ellis (9) led him to conclude that there are emotional factors in many, if not all, cases of reading disability. Sylvester and Kunst (23) reported that all pupils with …

Because of the potential of the films in helping teachers bridge the gap between the fundamental teaching of scientific principles, and the applications found in the actual experiences of the student's consumer world, requests for them have often exceeded the output of those that are educationally sound. Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The fact that delinquent boys tend to read at levels below their mental age is fairly well established in the literature (3). The suggestion is strong that delinquency and reading retardation may share a mutual etiology and causal relationship. Even stronger is the suggestion that the possibility of the rehabilitation of the delinquent youth on probation may be greatly enhanced if he is treated for reading retardation (5).

The Effect Of Ultraviolet Light On The Color Of Unbleached Pulps: Literature Survey, David L. Brew

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A literature survey was prepared which covered the published information on the effects of ultraviolet light on the color of unbleached pulps.

Experiments were conducted with eight types of unbleached pulp which were converted into optical test pads under varying pH conditions, using sulphuric acid and caustic soda as well as alum and sodium aluminate for adjustment of the hydrogen ion concentration. The optical test pads were exposed to ultraviolet irradiation. Thereafter, reflectance measurements were taken, covering the range of visible light.

From the limited number of experiments which were conducted we can conclude that:

This experiment was designed to test the effect of misarticulation on listener comprehension. Of the many authorities who suggest that poor speaking reduces comprehension, Knower, Phillips, and Koeppel state: "Poor speaking seems to be the least effective method of presenting informative materials. There is a direct relationship between the quality of speaking performance and the amount of material recall." One of the important factors which contributes to effective speaking is correct articulation. The problem as set forth in this thesis is to determine the correspondence of error between the voiced and unvoiced cognates "s" and "z" in children with articulatory disorders. It has been assumed that the correspondence of error type would be high due to the similarity of the sounds. Anderson, for example, says that "much of what is true with respect to "s" applies with equal force to its voiced analogue "z"." The movement of the tongue has been of concern for many years to the speech therapist. At one time tongue exercises were of prime importance in this field but due to the gross misuse of the exercises, they have now become of little importance. A Study Of The Latvian Exile-Immigrant Group In Kalamazoo, Henry George Halla

Statement of the Problem

The general purpose of this study is to determine whether such families in the Latvian population of Kalamazoo as insist upon considering themselves exiles and refuse to accept their immigrant status are less acculturated and assimilated than are such families that accept their immigrant status regardless of the fact that their original emigration from Latvia was a departure into exile. Also this study proposes to determine what social, cultural, economic and other variables are associated with each of the two types of families.

Separate Refining Versus Mixed Refining Of An “Easy” And “Hard” Refining Pulp, Richard M. Dennany

A study of the strength development (mullen and tear) of mixtures of "easy" and "hard" refining pulp, in which the pulps were refined as a mixture with that in which they were separately refined, and then mixed, reveals that separate refining develops mullen to the same extent as does mixed refining, but that a higher tearing resistance at the same freeness and mullen can be obtained with separate refining.

Utilization Of Deinking Waste, Richard H. Jones

Introduction

In research aimed at utilization of sludge obtained from primary sedimentation of deinking mill wastes a literature study was made to determine what has been done toward meeting these ends and what new lines of thought needed investigation.

Our first thought in a literature survey was to find out the nature of the deinking sludge. It was found that the composition of deinking solid varies greatly from mill to mill and is determined by the waste paper used. A commercial laboratory analysis showed that the sludge is principally clay and fiberous materials (Table I) (1).
