Introduction

The face of England changed dramatically during the 19th century. Railway tracks seemed her agrarian greenness, mines pocked her highlands and the smoke-belching blemishes of Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham bulged into ugly prominence in her misdirection, casting a sooty pall that boded no good for her aristocratic tradition.

An Analysis Of Drinking Practices And Problems Among Male Undergraduates At A Midwestern University, Ronald Charles Vanderkooi

The purpose of this research was to study the patterns and problems of drinking among men at a Midwestern university. The primary method used in the study was a questionnaire given to a cross-section of the male student body. The study was designed to determine the extent of drinking at the university. Such factors as the frequency and locality of drinking were investigated. Attitudes concerning college drinking were also explored. Finally, the study was concerned with problems associated with the use of alcohol by students.

The Purpose of the Study

The teaching of physics in the high school has been modified over the years to meet the changing needs of students and to include the developments of modern times. Together with these changes there has been in recent years much controversy concerning the purpose and value of laboratory work that accompanies the course. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between achievement in high-school physics and the amount of laboratory work that may be included.

The fox squirrel, Sciurus niger rufiventer, is an important small game animal throughout much of the Midwest. Within the last thirty years several scientific investigations have been focused on this animal, the result being that its life history and ecology are fairly well known.

Concerning the range of the fox squirrel, D. L. Allen (1943:33) states that, in Michigan, the range began to increase with the advent of the pioneers. Baumgartner (1940) and J. M. Allen (1952) noted similar occurrences in their respective states, Ohio and Indiana. In Kansas, the fox squirrel, aided by agricultural land-use, has spread westward throughout …

The Victorian Age of English history produced many great political leaders. Among the best known are Chamberlain, Disreali, Palmerston, Salisbury, and Gladstone. These politicians were able to pacify many dissatisfied groups and produce many reforms. Yet one of the biggest problems they had to face was left unsolved throughout the Victorian period, and the later Edwardian period as well. This problem was Ireland.

Differences In Picking Properties Between Casein And Soya Proteins, Shinya Takekawa

In this paper, the various picking properties are discussed at first, then in the experiment the fundamental differences between soya protein and casein in picking strength were studied.

Since it is considered that the penetration of the adhesives in a coating mixture into the base paper is important in picking, the picking strength of casein and soya protein were evaluated in functions of the beating level, sizing level and the amount of the adhesives. Whole experimental data were treated with the statistical method.

Description Of Elements Of The Life Cycle Of A New Species Of Leucochloridiomorpha (Trematode: Brachylaemidae) From Southwestern Michigan, Jon Shoemaker

Introduction

During the period extending from September, 1959 to July, 1960, 553 snails, of the species Campeloma decisum, were collected from Portage Creek in the southeast corner of the SE 1/4, Sec. 34, T. 2 S., R. 11 W., Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Metacercariae, closely related to Leucochloridiomorpha constantiae of the monotypic genus, Leucohloridiomorpha, were found in the uteri of several snails. Subsequent studies showed the metacercariae to be an undescribed species. Life history studies showed that this form developed experimentally in the chicken and domestic duck. In this paper stages in the life cycle are described.

Tardigrades, comprising fewer than 350 species, are microscopic animals which inhabit mosses, lichens, and algae. Tardigrades or "water bears" are distributed throughout the world. These invertebrates are found in fresh-water substrates (Cooke, 1959; Marcus, 1939, Moore, 1939; Pennak, 1940), marine substrates (Chitwood, 1951; Green, 1950; Jeannel et al., 1940; Marcus, 1927, 1946; Pennak, 1953:240; Wieser, 1959) and terrestrial habitats (Cuenot, 1929; Marcus, 1960; Rodriguez-Roda, 1948; Pennak, 1953:240). The "water bears" have also been found in the psammolittoral zone where they live between grains of sand, (Pennak, 1940) and there feed on algal cells (Marcus, 1929). Tardigrades puncture the cell …

The propagation of plants by seeds is often made difficult by dormancy in seeds. A dormant seed is one that will not germinate when it is exposed to conditions favorable for germination. Such seeds will begin growth, however, after they have been subjected to the proper after-ripening conditions. Therefore, the grower must wait several months in many cases before his seeds will germinate. Since it is often desirable to determine the viability of seeds at an early date, seed dormancy has presented a major problem to the farmer. A survey has been prepared covering the literature on the cold caustic soda pulping of Eucalyptus saligna. The survey was broadened to include pulping of all species of Eucalyptus by this particular process.

Experimental pulping of Eucalyptus saligna by the cold caustic soda process under a variety of conditions as well as pulping of aspen wood under one condition led to the following conclusions:

(a) Eucalyptus saligna is suitable for the manufacture of cold caustic soda pulp.

(b) alkali concentration of 30 grams per liter on full size chips of Eucalyptus saligna produces the best strength properties and fairly good …

The available literature on the cold caustic soda pulping process, the composition of aspen wood, the composition of spent liquor from other pulping processes, paper chromatographic methods suitable for the analysis of wood and pulp hydrolyzates, and the material removed from aspen wood by the cold caustic soda pulping process have been surveyed.

Aspen wood hydrolyzates were analyzed using n-butanol: pyridine: water solvent system by paper chromatographic methods. Cold caustic soda pulp was prepared using a two hour soaking period at 25°^c temperature, and a 24 gram per liter caustic soda solution with a wood to liquor ratio …

A literature survey was conducted to determine what work, if any, had been done on dialdehyde starch as a coating adhesive. As a result of the survey, it was decided that experimental work would be started with the hope of overcoming some of the difficulties which confronted previous investigators and investigating further the use of dialdehyde starch as an adhesive.

After experimental preparation and evaluation of the coated and aftertreated sheets, the following conclusions were formed:

This investigation seems to indicate that printing smoothness, although dependent upon both smoothness of the sheet and compressibility, is much more dependent upon the smoothness of the paper being printed. For the samples tested printing pressure required seems to be a function of the smoothness and the deformation pressure with the smoothness apparently most important.
