They said, "From every angle, an adult with a disorder of articulation presents a much more serious problem than a child with such a defect" (40. p. 218). Their statement is an appropriate current evaluation of the same problem. The American Speech and Hearing Association's Committee on the Midcentury White House Conference reported that the incidence of articulatory disorders was equal, 3.3% for both children and adults in the United States (1). In 1949 Francis Bitter proposed a method for optcally detecting radio frequency resonance. That same year Alfred Kastler, Fcole Normale Superiéure, Paris, France, introduced a technique, which he called "Optical Pumping", of concentrating atoms in some of the Zeeman sublevels of one of the hyperfine state levels of the ground state. These two experiments are the basis of research involving optical methods of atomic orientation and of magnetic resonance.

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

Clinical experience as well as considerable research, which will be discussed later in this chapter, has shown that children are inconsistent in their misarticulation of speech sounds. Children who typically misarticulate a sound may, nevertheless, articulate the sound correctly in certain words. Several authors have suggested that these occasional correct productions of the usually misarticulated sound can be useful in therapy. For example, in a discussion of therapy techniques Van Riper (32, p. 273) has recommended the use of "key words" in helping a child correct his articulation errors:

A preliminary investigation on bamboo pulping by Semi-Keebra process reveals that a higher pulp yield than that obtained by most of the known methods of pulping bamboo can be attained by Semi-Keebra process.* The chemical requirement for pulping is lower than the conventional processes and the spent liquor also contains a higher per cent of solids. The pulp obtained by Semi-Keebra pulp would also require a considerable lesser time for obtaining the desired freeness value, resulting in lower power consumption for stock preparation, than that for the conventional sulphate bamboo pulp of bleachable grade. The amount of water ·in paper determines indirectly the strength of it by dictating what type of bonds are formed between fibers. The less water in paper the stronger it is. Wet pressing is considered in detail as one method of water removal to determine what factors affect the amount of water removal since this would indirectly affect the development of paper strength. Specifically, the effect of fiber length and the degree of fibrillation was studied. It was found that as fiber length decreases the amount of water that can be removed decreases and that as the degree of fibrillation …

The vertical-horizontal illusion has been the object of experimental study for many years. The first man to investigate the vertical-horizontal illusion was probably Oppel in 1854. Since the time of Oppel's first experiment, many theories have been advanced in an attempt to explain what causes this illusion to occur in our perception of connected vertical-horizontal lines. The primary theory that is most widely accepted states that the vertical line in the "T" illusion will be judged longer because of the vertical-horizontal relationship.
