The focus of this study has derived, in part, from the experience of teaching a course in "The History of Social Thought" to undergraduate sociology majors. The more comprehensive texts in the field accord Dante some notice. But the treatment he receives as a social thinker is uniformly patronizing. This paper shall describe and analyze United States' policy towards Korea from 1834, when American attention was first attracted to that country because of possible trade opportunities, to 1954, which saw the completion of the Geneva Conference on Korea. Throughout this period American policy was neither static, nor was it ever well defined. During this span of one hundred and twenty years American policy in Korea falls logically into two main periods:

i) the initial period from 1834 to 1943 during which time America's primary concern was the establishment and maintenance of the "Open Door" policy;

The term "fatty acids" was first applied principally to saturated, monobasic carboxylic acids and especially to long chain acids derived from animal and vegetable oils. As time passed and the knowledge of natural fats increased, polyunsaturated, hydroxy, keto and branched chain acids were also found as constituents of these fats and oils and these also came under the heading of fatty acids. Even acids containing alicyclic substituents were found.

Introduction

Derivatives of phenoxyacetic acid (PAA), because of their activity as synthetic auxins, have long been of interest in the botanical sciences. PAA itself was noted (29) to have some auxin activity. However, real interest in PAA derivatives awaited the establishment of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as a powerful, selective herbicide (12). An enormous number of PAA analogs and homologs have been investigated for their potential in the herbicide industry, and the statistical evidence from these investigations has been used as the basis for several interesting and sometimes conflicting theories of auxin mechanisms (17, 26, 23, 27).

The fundamental aims of a nation's foreign policies are national security and the achievement of national objectives through diplomacy. At different periods in American history, the foreign policy of the United States has been designed to advance a variety of aims. It is possible, for example, to speak of missionary diplomacy, moral diplomacy, military diplomacy and dollar diplomacy. In Allegan County, Michigan, there exists an area of land known as the Allegan State Forest (Figs. 1 and 2). The Forest compromises 35,755 acres of land and is located just west of the city of Allegan.¹ It is an area primarily noted for its forestry, wildfire conservation, and recreational facilities. Before becoming a state forest and prior to the 1930's, this land passed through sequential occupance by Indians, pioneers, lumberman, and farmers. When the forest area was first settled, the land was abundantly covered with trees. The trees soon became the victims of the lumbermen's axe, and …
