Likewise, there is nothing more difficult than a teacher's attempt to teach a set of skills when the teacher has not yet decided what the skills are. A facile reader himself, a teacher might not have analyzed the reading processes in which his mind engages. Yet he must have a clear understanding of these thinking skills if he is to instill them in his students.

Teaching Reading in High School by Robert Karlin? This book was designed for high school teachers interested in providing reading instruction in their classrooms. Karlin emphasizes the need for the teaching of developmental reading at the secondary level, and he supports his point of view with statistics resulting from a survey taken in the New York public high schools in 1955. According to this survey approximately forty percent of the students evaluated were found to be reading at least a year below their reading expectancies. Introduction

The term aliphatic azo compound refers to those azo compounds in which at least one of the two nitrogen atoms is linked to a tetrahedral, that is, sp³ -hybridized carbon atom. Di-imides, RN=NH, however, are not being considered. Mixed aliphatic-aromatic azo compounds are those in which one nitrogen atom is linked to an sp³ -hybridized carbon atom and the other to an aromatic sp² -hybridized carbon atom. If present, a symmetry element (point or plane) is determined by the mid-point between the two nitrogen atoms.

Bonding characteristics of the fibers in a sheet of paper have long been, and still are, difficult to isolate in a manner which will give exact quantitative information on the degree or bonding. It is possible to indicate with strength tests different levels or bonding. Other factors -- fiber strength, fiber length, cell wall thickness, etc.,-- also enter into values obtained in these tests and make the assignment of exact meaning to bonding impossible. Introduction

The reaction of lead tetraacetate with ketohydrazones to form azoacetates has been reported recently by Iffland, Salisbury and Schafer (13) and may be represented by the following equation:

R₂C=N-NH-R' + Pb(0Ac)₄ → R₂C-N=N-R' + Pb(OAc)₂ + HOAc OAc

Of principal interest has been the base-catalyzed decomposition of an azoacetate in a protonic solvent to give a ketone, a hydrocarbon, nitrogen and an acetate salt. The following sequence of steps has been proposed to account for these products (11).

Introduction

Laryngectomy, the surgical removal of the larynx, is performed to save life threatened by a carcinomatous condition of the larynx. This surgical procedure is also performed when necessitated by accident, injury or other pathologies of the larynx. (35).

There are living, in the United States, an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 individuals who have undergone surgical removal of the larynx due to the carcinomatous condition of that organ (33). It is probable that the total population of laryngectomized persons would exceed this number if statistical information were available concerning the number of laryngectomies …

Introduction

Developmental studies of speech (12, 13, 24) have indicated that the growth of articulation skills in children follows a definite pattern, with the vowels being first mastered, then the consonants, and finally, the consonant blends. Studies generally agree that the normal child acquires essentially adult articulation by eight years of age. It may be expected, then, that in the early elementary grades, immature articulation skills are not unusual in normal children, and that at higher grade levels, immature articulation skills are relatively less common. Deriving meaning from the printed page in a high school situation requires the ability to use a great variety of reading skills. Some of these skills are developed in the first grade. During each school year they are extended and refined and new skills are acquired. By the time a student enters high school he should have at his command the knowledge of and the ability to apply a vast variety of reading skills when attacking the printed page. Only then can he understand, use and enjoy ideas presented in written form.

The purposes of this study were to determine, through the use of a questionnaire: (1) the awareness and attitudes of administrators concerning the State's requirement for the teaching of alcohol education; (2) the administrator's opinion of the adequacy of teacher-training institutions in preparing teachers to conduct the instruction of alcohol education; (3) the time allotment and placement of alcohol education in the individual school programs; (4) the administrator's evaluation of the adequacy of textbooks in their coverage of information about alcohol; (5) the degree to which the individual schools are helping their teachers prepare this part of the curriculum; and …
