Effectiveness Of Titanium Dioxide In Beater And Coating Applications, Alptekin Akman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Titanium dioxide has been used as a filler and coating pigment in the manufacture of paper products for many years. In addition to its ability to make papers whiter and brighter, it is a most important opacifying material.

Since brightness, whiteness, and opacity are very important properties of paper, this report deals with beater applications where the pigment serves to brighten and opacify the sheet with minimum loading or filling, coating applications, and the combination of both. The effectiveness of the titanium dioxide is investigated by testing the coated and the loaded hand sheets for brightness, opacity, and gloss.

Preface

The contemporary argument over method reaches into all the traditional diversions of social science, of which political science is no exception. Such names as structure-functionalism, decision theory, systems analysis, behavioralism, and game theory have become commonplace identifications of political methodologies in the twentieth century. And if one consideration has generated this plethora of seemingly novel approaches to the study of politics, it is an epistemological one. Ten cooks were carried out after an acceptable experimental procedure was found.

The brightness obtained was extremely high when compared to conventional cooks. All cooks gave a very low permanganate number. The yield ranged from 60 percent to 54 percent with 58 to 96 percent peracetic acid on the oven dry weight of the chips.

The objective of this study was to explore the use of enzyme conversion as a method of reducing the viscosity of casein without substantially affecting its adhesive strength. By doing so casein could be made applicable for use in high-solids coatings, where both low coating viscosity and high adhesive strength as desirable.

With this objective in mind casein samples were hydrolized to different degrees using enzymes, and the strength and viscosity properties of the adhesive were studied. This paper describes an investigation intended to: 1. observe the effect of electrolyte concentration on the stability of kaolin-water systems, 2. evaluate the relative sediment volume measurement as a tool for determining the stability of such systems, 3. assess the applicability of the Verwey-Overbeek theory of stability of lyophobic colloids for predicting the observed effects, and 4. determine if any correlation exists between the effects predicted by the theory and observed through the relative sediment volume measurement.

Studies On The Preparation Of Tetrasubstituted Hydrazones, William Kao

Introduction

In a recent study of the ultraviolet spectra of substituted hydrazones, it was concluded that a sterio effect existed in tetrasubstituted hydrazones that significantly hindered complete rotation about the nitrogen-nitrogen bond. Weber¹⁶ noted that di- and tri-substituted hydrazones exhibited similar spectra with three strong absorption bands at approximately 235, 300, and 340 mu. In acid solutions, the spectra of these compounds showed a marked decrease in intensity of the long wavelength band. It has been postulated that this change was a consequence of the protonation of the non-bonding electron-pair on the amino nitrogen atom, and thus correlated the …

A method of selective oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones has been developed recently, namely the use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the oxidizing agent, either alone or with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC)¹⁴, acid anhydrides¹, or alkyl chloroformates¹⁰. The negatively polarized oxygen atom of the sulfoxide group in DMSO is ideally situated for a transfer to many electron-deficient substrates. The oxygen of the alcohol coordinates with the sulfur atom of DMSO through its oxygen atom; this is followed by β-elemination of dimethyl sulfide, thereby resulting in oxidation of the …

The purpose of this investigation was to differentiate Staphylococcus aureus phage type 42D from Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The investigation involved four approaches to this differentiation. The first was a selective screening technique on specific media to point out physical and biochemical characteristics and to demonstrate the presence of specific enzymes. The second was a drug survey which was used to show basic susceptibility and resistance to ten different antibiotics.
