The need for using less expensive raw materials is ever increasing. Here the use of hardwood sawdust as one of these raw materials was investigated for use in Semichemical Corrugating Medium. It was found that 20 to 30% sawdust could be used in the furnish without a significant loss in sheet strength. It was also found that sawdust could be pulped either separately or combined with hardwood chips giving the same product quality. This was accomplished by either a regular neutral sulfite semichemical cook or by a vapor phase cook. The conventional disk refiner was found to do the best …

This investigation is conducted under found broad categories - effect of various cooking methods, blending with softwood, CEHD bleaching and fiber microscopy.

It is found that the leaves are unpulpable but the stalks and stems give fibers comparable to hardwoods.

Banana pulps are uneconomical to bleach due to high Kappa numbers and acid pretreatment requirement.

The individual fibers are long, slender and stiff similar to bamboo and rice fibers. Peculiar hairlike structure are dominant.

Banana pulp can be substituted for hardwood pulp in the manufacture of bags and wrapping paper and especially advantageous for liner board due to its high …

The Ultra-Former is a new type of multi-ply board machine. It uses a cylinder mold without a vat and has a stock delivery system that uses a headbox similar to that found on a fourdrinier machine. The board made on the Ultra-Former has several improved qualities over the board made on the conventional type board machines. Of these several improved qualities formation is one of the most important.

This reporting is a review of the current issue of knowledge in the area of size press variables. It delves into the sheet properties affected by the application of surface size.

A pilot plant study was conducted which evaluated the affect of Penford Gum 280. This starch was applied to the 46 pound 50% hardwood, 50% softwood, 15% clay filled sheet being formed on the 30 inch wide pilot papermachine at Western Michigan University. Starch application was made at various temperature and solids concentrations to obtain different amounts of pickup and variables deaths of penetration.

The two-year college itself is still a relatively new concept and reading programs designed to fit the still evolving function of these schools offer the reading specialist both freedom and frustrations. A remarkable French book which deals comprehensively with the different aspects of reading is La Lisibilite by Frangois Richaudeau, published in Paris by Denoel-Gontier in 1969. The title of this book immediately brings up a common problem in translation. Every serious student of language knows that very frequently the corresponding or supposedly equivalent words in different languages do not have quite the same meaning. While they may have considerable basic relationship, one may cover more or less ground than the other, and they do not come to the idea from the same angle of approach.

How do you get children to write poetry? For several years my husband and I have been interested in finding an answer to this question. As college teachers we have been particularly concerned about the numbers of good students who come to us reluctant to either write or read poetry. Our theory w-as that children at any age will take to poetry if they can be encouraged to make some poems themselves and to talk easily about the poems. This will lead, in turn, to their enjoyment of other poetry and all imaginative literature.

In a great many high schools, teachers are finding that their students' inability to comprehend the textbook at grade level is becoming an increasingly serious problem. Frequently, these teachers state, reading the text with adequate understanding is "out of the question" for many of their students. High school administrators are looking for ways to set up special classes or institute remedial reading programs in order to solve what appears to be a growing reading problem. An Electron Microscopical Study Of The Ultrastructure And Classification Hemocyte Of The Grasshopper, Melanoplus Differentials (Thomas) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), Andrejs Liepins

The hemocytes of the fifth instar nymphs of the grasshopper Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) have been the subject of this study. The hemocytes of this insect, based on the fine structures of its cells, have been found to fall into four main categories or groups: Nucleocytes, Plasmatocytes, Granulocytes and Coagulocytes. The bases for their classification are differences in the ultrastructure of the cytoplasmic organelles as well as cytoplasmic inclusions are revealed as revealed by electron microscopy.

The key pecking responses of six pigeons were reinforced in the presence of a bisected response key when both halves were of equal wavelength; responses to non-matching presentations were not reinforced. Subsequent generalization tests involving novel non-matching stimuli were conducted in extinction. The results indicated the acquisition of a conceptual color matching discrimination; however, post-discrimination training peak shifts may interfere with the demonstration of the concept of color matching.

Introduction

The heat of polymerization (∆H_p) of α-methylstyrene (AMS) has been a source of study for many years. The structure of AMS is shown in Figure 1.

The first quantitative work was done by Roberts and Jessup.¹ Their values were more positive than those theoretically calculated by Flory² and compared with ∆H_p data of other systems. This was not totally unexpected and could be satisfactorily explained on the basis of steric hindrance and loss of resonance energy of conjugation. This steric hindrance arose from "head-to-tail" polymerization of the 1, 1-disubstituted ethylene structure.³ Their data …
