Celibacy And The Gregorian Reform, Raymond M. Rademacher Apr 1973

Celibacy And The Gregorian Reform, Raymond M. Rademacher

Masters Theses

Included in the Gregorian Reform of the eleventh century was the clerical discipline of celibacy. Even though celibacy was not a new discipline at that time, Pope Gregory VII vigorously enforced the canons on celibacy. In a matter of such intimacy there was bound to be opposition to the enforcement of these canons. Tradition offered ample support to both parties of the conflict. The long standing tradition of married clergy served as a strong support to those who opposed the Gregorian enforcement. However, the traditional canons in favor of celibacy gave impetus to the reformers of the eleventh century.

An Exploration Of Numerous Customer Characteristics Associated With Impulse Purchasing Behavior, Ira J. Jager Apr 1973

An Exploration Of Numerous Customer Characteristics Associated With Impulse Purchasing Behavior, Ira J. Jager

Masters Theses

Introduction

The term "impulse buying behavior" evokes different connotations to different researchers. It is for this reason that it is difficult to formulate a universal definition for all research in the field. Engel, Kollat, and Blackwell (1968) list some of the definitions given to impulse purchasing by those who have done research in this field:

(1) "An impulse purchase is an unplanned spur of the moment decision to purchase a product."

(2) "An impulse purchase is a logical and efficient way of making purchase decisions since by waiting until one is in the store to finalize purchase intentions, a more …

Implications Of Photogeologic Linears In The South Long Lake Area, Alpena And Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, Richard E. Kimmel Apr 1973

Implications Of Photogeologic Linears In The South Long Lake Area, Alpena And Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, Richard E. Kimmel

Masters Theses

There are numerous linear features in Alpena and Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, which are generally visible on aerial photographs. These photolinears trend in two general directions, northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast. These two sets are perpendicular to each other, and represent vector means of two fracture sets.

The development of the photolinears began in Early Devonian. Throughout its history, ground water flowed along underground channels connecting fracture intersections. This underground drainage network is responsible for many of the photolinears. Some of the photolinears can be attributed tb Early Devonian ground water activity and subsequent collapse of the Salina Salt basin, and some …

Operant And Classical Conditioning Of Single Units In Area 18a Of The Rat’S Cortex, Francis E. Butler Apr 1973

Operant And Classical Conditioning Of Single Units In Area 18a Of The Rat’S Cortex, Francis E. Butler

Masters Theses

The effect of the previous history of a single unit on its present firing pattern was studied using classical and operant conditioning. The units were in area 18a of the rat's cortex. It was found that there are polymodal units in that area. The firing pattern can be changed using classical conditioning. The rate of firing can be increased one standard deviation above the mean rate by reinforcing with brain stimulation. The rate can also be changed one standard deviation below the mean rate. This occurs when the trials come at a fixed time and when the trials come at …

Successive Discrimination Reversal Learning In The Rat Offspring As A Function Of Maternal Stress During Gestation, Miles A. Kowall Apr 1973

Successive Discrimination Reversal Learning In The Rat Offspring As A Function Of Maternal Stress During Gestation, Miles A. Kowall

Masters Theses

This paper itself with the effect of prenatal stress on the learning ability of the offspring, parental emotionality on learning ability, and how these two factors interact. Female animals were categorized as either high or low emotional by measures in the open field and then further divided into shock or no-shock groups. This provided the stress condition. All females were stressed during pregnancy. Cross fostering and fostering techniques were used to provide more stringent control measures so as to be able to extrapolate prenatal influence from post natal artifacts. This resulted in a 2X2X3 analysis of variance matrix with error …

An Investigation Into The Interrelatedness Of Selected Demographic And Psychometric Variables To Determine Those Variables Which Affect Success Of Graduates From A Comprehensive Vocational Rehabilitation Center, Paul S. Miller Apr 1973

An Investigation Into The Interrelatedness Of Selected Demographic And Psychometric Variables To Determine Those Variables Which Affect Success Of Graduates From A Comprehensive Vocational Rehabilitation Center, Paul S. Miller

Masters Theses

The results of this study pertain to two broad areas as suggested by these questions:

1. Would it be possible to significantly differentiate successfully trained vocational rehabilitation clients as to their success or failure since graduation from State Technical and Rehabilitation Center, by using an operational definition of success and these variables: age, I.Q., Reading Level, Math Level, Marital Status, Education, Race, Grade Point Average, Semesters Completed, Source of Financial Support, and Employment in Trade.

2. Would these eleven variables singularly and/or in combinations provide significant and practical predictions of vocational rehabilitation outcomes?

In addition to contributing to the limited …

The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker Apr 1973

The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker

Masters Theses

A six-month-old infant was conditioned to imitate four verbal cues presented by an adult experimenter by using food as a reinforcer. Aversive schedules (escape-avoidance of, or punishment with a loud buzzer) were then introduced to suppress inattentive behavior. Inattention defined as looking away from the investigator, crying, rate of vocalizations, and accuracy of imitations were measured. Three conclusions of the experiment were: 1) verbal imitation can be shaped and maintained through positive reinforcement; 2) the use of aversive schedules is not necessarily beneficial for the performance of the imitative task, or for the general well-being of the child.

Teaching Reading In Business Subjects, Ron C. Deyoung Apr 1973

Teaching Reading In Business Subjects, Ron C. Deyoung

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

"Anyone can read" is the attitude of some people, even people who should know better. The fallacy of such an attitude is realized with the following analogy. Aristotle is known to have said, "One learns to be a good flute player by playing the flute. One also learns to be a poor flute player by playing the flute." In the same way, one learns to be a good or poor reader by reading.

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Instructional Emphasis Of Two Filing Textbooks Commonly Used In Secondary Schools And Their Relation To The Filing Procedures In The Business Office, Patricia Ann Skinner Apr 1973

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Instructional Emphasis Of Two Filing Textbooks Commonly Used In Secondary Schools And Their Relation To The Filing Procedures In The Business Office, Patricia Ann Skinner

Masters Theses

This study compared the instructional material in two textbooks commonly used for high school filing instruction with the perceptions of records supervisors and office practice teachers.

A questionnaire was designed for each of the two major groups of respondents. Usable survey instruments were completed by supervisors of 67 offices in the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph area and office practice teachers in the 13 high schools in the same geographic area.

While the records supervisors and office practice teachers were in agreement on a number of points relating to the filing process and instructional emphases (using a rank-order mismatch formula), they were …

Schedule Effects On Individual And Paired Escape Behavior Of Albino Rats, Anton P. Colasacco Apr 1973

Schedule Effects On Individual And Paired Escape Behavior Of Albino Rats, Anton P. Colasacco

Masters Theses

In Experiment I, the effects of low fixed ratios on individual escape behavior of rats was studied. When FR sessions were compared to CRF sessions, measures related to shock delivery showed highest percentage increases, especially at FR-5.

Animals were then paired. Two schedules were analyzed as alternatives to individual escape. In Experiment II, shock was terminated when a specified FR was completed, either by the responses of one animal or by the total responses of both animals. Escape as a function of both animals responding was not maintained. In Experiment III, shock was terminated individually as before, or when both …

A Study To Determine The Effectiveness Of An Interest Grouping Classification For Primary Grade Children, Dianne T. Mcafee Williams

Masters Theses

The purpose was to determine if a subject arrangement of easy fiction books, based on the interests of primary-grade children, and denoted by picture symbols, would make the students more satisfied with, and independent in, their book selections, as compared to an author arrangement of easy fiction books.

The study was divided into two parts, the former dealing with the author arrangement and the latter dealing with the subject arrangement. Tally sheets of student subject requests were kept by the librarian in a comparison of the two arrangements. Followup included questionnaires to primary grade teachers and librarian, and interviews with …
