Use Of Brazilian Clays For Coating Formulations, Rubens Pellegrini Apr 1974

Use Of Brazilian Clays For Coating Formulations, Rubens Pellegrini

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Foreword

The massive effort of the Brazilian Government to develop a stronger and more competitive industry has boosted the production of pulp and paper up to six times its level of 1969.

The increasing demand for coated papers has forced the industry to look for new domestic sources of clay and to try to use the internally available product. Besides the undesirable situation of dependency upon a source many thousands of miles way, the difference in cost is the most appealing factor of all.

Today the three largest pulp and paper producers in Brazil have their own mines to assure …

The Effect Of Filler Type And Level On Inframike And Moistron Moisture Measurement And Accuray Basis Weight Measurement, Robert G. Tomich Apr 1974

The Effect Of Filler Type And Level On Inframike And Moistron Moisture Measurement And Accuray Basis Weight Measurement, Robert G. Tomich

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The following report is a study on the effects of filler type and level on the Inframike, Moistron and Accuray Basis Weight. Specifically, the effects of clay talc and Ti02 were investigated at 5%, 10·%, and 15% addition levels.

The Inframike was affected linearly by all three filters. The Moistron was not affected by talc and clay, but it was affected in a non-uniform manner by Ti02. The Accuray was not affected by clay and it was affected linearly by talc and Ti02.

The Effect Of Three Different Surface Sizes On Coated Sheet Properties, Roy W. Kemppainen Apr 1974

The Effect Of Three Different Surface Sizes On Coated Sheet Properties, Roy W. Kemppainen

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A literature search showed that although much work has been done on the mechanism of coating migration (1, 3, 5) and the influence of base sheet properties on migration (2, 8). No reports were found on the influence of different surface sizes on coating migration. The functions of a surface size in coating base stock is threefold. First, it is to resist excessive water penetration so that the sheet will retain sufficient strength for the coating operation. Second, the smoothness which it imparts is beneficial to further printing processes, especially in the case of offset. The third function of a …

Don't Call Me "Madam", Louis Foley Apr 1974

Don't Call Me "Madam", Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The word madame is known throughout the world, and everywhere it is pronounced acceptably-except among English-speaking people. It would be said to translate literally as "my lady," but so-called literal translations are usually only mistranslations. Anyhow, the word has no real equivalent in modern English.

Reading And Extraneous-Free Tests, Jerome Axelrod Apr 1974

Reading And Extraneous-Free Tests, Jerome Axelrod

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

An extraneous-loaded test is one which tests something other than or more than what the exam purports to test. A pupil's score on an extraneous-loaded test is unduly inflated or deflated because it allows him to bring to the testing situation data (i.e., experiences and previous learnings) which are unrelated to the test but which "help him out" (so the pupil thinks) with the answers. For example, if a student figures out the correct answer to a question in an objective reading comprehension test by using the process of elimination, then that question does not test reading comprehension. Instead, it …

Reading In The Secondary School, Kenneth Vandermeulen Apr 1974

Reading In The Secondary School, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Secondary teachers of vocational subjects frequently have to face the burdensome task of choosing the right text for their courses, but they would not and should not delegate the responsibility to other offices or agencies. In having to deal with choice of texts, teachers feel several factors are operating against the chances of finding the right textbook. Sometimes they express a certain frustration, saying, "As if it is not enough responsibility to try to prepare young people for a role in a technical area, we even have some evidence that students whose verbal backgrounds are poor are advised to take …

All of these systems are associated with the last advance of ice, namely the Valders Advance (fig. …

The Impact Of Directly Mailed Family Planning Materials To Afdc Welfare Mothers, Paul J. Placek Apr 1974

The Impact Of Directly Mailed Family Planning Materials To Afdc Welfare Mothers, Paul J. Placek

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

Communications research has repeatedly documented the fact that people are affected by the various forms of mass media, and so family planning programs have begun to use television (Hutchinson, 1970), radio, movies, posters, telephones (Dabbs and Neiger, 1970), newspapers, and various combinations of these media (Clark and Morris, 1972; Chase, 1972; Balakrishnan, 1967; Takeshita, 1966; Cernada and Lu, 1972) in transmitting the message of family planning. Our present media focus, however, involves direct mailing, which in contrast to other media, often has the advantages of being sent by an authoritative or prestigious source, is relatively …

Ethnicity, Professionalism, And Black Paternalism: Implications For Social Welfare Services, Robert S. Bartlett Apr 1974

Ethnicity, Professionalism, And Black Paternalism: Implications For Social Welfare Services, Robert S. Bartlett

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

The assumption around the use of nonprofessionals as members of the agency team suggest that the "bridge" function is enhanced when the new worker and the client-system are similar in such factors as ethnicity, class, cultural background, religion, and so on. Data from a 1968 survey tested Grosser's hypothesis: "that staff similarity with the client in ethnicity...will result in greater accuracy regarding the client and his community (1966:60)". Grosser's hypothesis was tested at a black staffed community action agency, serving a black ghetto in a large metropolitan city in the northeastern section of the United …

The 'Credentials Trap' And Social Work Staff Utilization, Ralph Segalman Apr 1974

The 'Credentials Trap' And Social Work Staff Utilization, Ralph Segalman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

From an examination of the foregoing charted analysis, it is apparent that social work probably cannot make much progress until it has overcome its "identity crisis." Differentiation of tasks based on outmoded or societally irrelevant models can only aggravate, rather than solve social work's confusion in relation to more effective utilization of manpower and resources.
