What Are We Going To Do About The Current Threat To The Idea Of A University?, Joseph R. Royce Jan 1976

What Are We Going To Do About The Current Threat To The Idea Of A University?, Joseph R. Royce

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The university never has been a "strong" social institution, but it has seen better days as a bastion of learning. Since it is one of the few havens for the creative minority, it is obvious that continued neglect of this institution will be detrimental to the development of "high" culture. The point is that it is the creative minority - artists, philosophers, scientists - who provide the new awarenesses, values, and sensitivities which are necessary for the dynamics of a complex, modern culture.

A View On Three Days Of General Education Summary Address, Agls Convention, Cbs 1976, Francis L. Broderick

Perspectives (1969-1979)

While everybody shied away from defining humanities or liberal studies or 1 general education, some essential notions about these complex topics, so much a part of our lives and work, came through in what was said by us all. Let me try a couple of definitions. With appropriate nods to diffidence, let me just say flatly that the definition of the humanities should include at least the following elements: 1) centrality of concern on human beings rather than on structures of society or on the processes of nature; 2) attention to, probably focus on, the individual rather than the group; …

Social Policies And Social Development - A Humanistic-Egalitarian Perspective, David G. Gil Jan 1976

Social Policies And Social Development - A Humanistic-Egalitarian Perspective, David G. Gil

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This essay explores the relationship of social policies and of policy-relevant societal values to social development. Its thesis is that the scope, direction, and quality of the social development process are largely shaped by the social policies and the dominant value positions of societies.

Social Change And Social Action, Bernard J. Coughlin, S. K. Khinduka Jan 1976

Social Change And Social Action, Bernard J. Coughlin, S. K. Khinduka

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

We define social action as a strategy to obtain limited social change at the intermediate or macro levels of society which is generally used in nonconsensus situations and employs both "norm-adhering" and "norm-testing" modes of intervention. In this formulation, the key concept is social change. This paper proposes to explore certain aspects of social change as they apply to social action.

The discussion is divided into two parts. The first is a brief summary of pertinent social change theory, presented as background for part two in which are presented and discussed certain propositions about planned change that are critical to …

Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee Jan 1976

Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Under a variety of labels, many academic disciplines focus on the unsettling impact of fresh and vivid interpersonal experiences upon pre-existing beliefs and behaviour patterns. Reference is to philosophical discussions of sophism and humanism, historical theories about frontier influences, anthropological interest in culture shock, psychiatric concern with empathy and with perceptive listening, and sociological analyses of marginality, uses of participant observation and life-history data, and clinical studies of social behavior. Their significant similarity is that they are all discussions of demystifying influences on social thought and action. They are demystifying in the sense that they tend to translate the distant, …

Echoes From The Field, Ernie Adams Jan 1976

Echoes From The Field, Ernie Adams

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Close observers of successful football coaches suggest that one phrase describes Woody Hayes, Darrell Royal, Bear Bryant, and John McKay. It is a simple phrase - "commitment to fundamentals." Their teams always seem to block with excellence, tackle with unmatched aggression and run like a scared ape trying to elude his mother-in-law.

Public Welfare: Utilization, Change, Appropriations, Service, John E. Tropman Jan 1976

Public Welfare: Utilization, Change, Appropriations, Service, John E. Tropman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

During the decade of the 1960's there was continually increasing interest in the programs of public welfare. This interest sprang from several sources. Citizens, always worried about welfare expenditures, developed resurgent concern. Recipients, long a quiet group, became more active, forming the National Welfare Rights Organization. And then there was the rediscovery of poverty as a social problem, and a realization that very many Americans were poor, many more than anyone had somehow realized.

The general interest in poverty and the measures used to relieve it had an effect on the academic community, generating some sustained and critical attention to …

The Punishment Of Divorced Mothers, Herman Borenzweig Jan 1976

The Punishment Of Divorced Mothers, Herman Borenzweig

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

As the clinical social worker to seven young divorced mothers I began to wonder why the lives of these women had become so remarkably unbearable. I compared the experiences of the women who were coming to me for group psychotherapy with about thirty similar divorced mothers who were also members of the West Side Jewish Community Center of Los Angeles. All the women were experiencing similar difficulties. I also explored some of the literature about the problems faced by divorced mothers! This essay is the culmination of my research. It summarizes some of my conjectures about the disadvantaged social status …

Low Income, Ethnicity, And Voluntary Association Involvement, Nancy G. Kutner Jan 1976

Low Income, Ethnicity, And Voluntary Association Involvement, Nancy G. Kutner

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Data on voluntary association participation among low-income members of major ethnic groups in the U.S. are reviewed. Low-income blacks are most likely to participate, followed by (2) whites and Mexican Americans and (3) Italian Americans and Puerto Ricans. Reasons for these ethnic differences are considered. More general factors affecting voluntary association patterns of low-income persons are also considered, and a means for increasing their voluntary association involvement is suggested.

Drying Rates, Infrared Drying, And Binder Migration, Alan Larson Dec 1975

Drying Rates, Infrared Drying, And Binder Migration, Alan Larson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Proper distribution of adhesive in pigmented coatings is necessary to obtain good printability. This ___ undertaker to study the effect of varying drying rates on adhesive distribution. Using a standard substrate, coating was dried under four separate drying rates on a pilot coater equipped with an air knife coater and three sections of hot air driers. After grinding to carious derths, a spectrophotometric method was used to analyze migration behavior. The fastest rate, utilizing an infrared heater temporarily placed directly after the air knife, showed extremely uniform adhesive distribution. This was due in part to the reflective foil placed opposite …

Dow Saran Microspheres A Low Weight – High Bulk Filler, William R. Hajek Dec 1975

Dow Saran Microspheres A Low Weight – High Bulk Filler, William R. Hajek

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Dow Saran Microspheres as a light weight high bulk filler has been plagued with certain problems, due to the distribution and retention of the microspheres within the sheet. These problems concern dusting and build-up of the microsphere polymer on the dryer cans and during the printing operations on the finished base sheet.

Single and dual retention aid systems were studied and analyzed as a possible solution to the poor distribution and retention of the spheres within the sheet.

Based on this experimental data, the dual retention aid system proved far superior in improving sphere distribution as well as sphere retention. …

Two-Stage Peroxide-Hydrosulphite Bleaching Of Groundwood Pulp, Richard Daniel Hyatt Dec 1975

Two-Stage Peroxide-Hydrosulphite Bleaching Of Groundwood Pulp, Richard Daniel Hyatt

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The conditions and chemicals for the use of hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydrosulphite and zinc hydrosulphite for the bleaching of groundwood pulp are discussed. Previous research provided guidelines for establishing optimum conditions for temperature, time, pH, consistency and type of buffer. The research carried out determined optimum conditions for a two-stage peroxide-hydrosulphite sequence. The use of an HCl extraction prior to bleaching was found to be as effective as EDTA for the removal of heavy metals. The combination of peroxide-hydrosulphite gave a brightness rise of 26 G. E. points while hydrogen peroxide alone gave 22.2 points and hydrosulphite alone gave 8.7 …

An Operation Research Approach To The Economic Optimization Of Kraft Pulping, Robert E. Packwood Dec 1975

An Operation Research Approach To The Economic Optimization Of Kraft Pulping, Robert E. Packwood

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The first attempt to apply operations research to the kraft industry came in 1959 by C.W. Carroll at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. Carroll developed a pulping rate expression and incorporated engineering balances to complete his mathematical model. Carroll then developed an optimization technique to optimize kraft mill economic performance.

This work develops the mathematical model utilizing a different pulping rate expression and further develops certain areas (e.g. recovery boiler, lime kiln, and washer models) utilizing regression equations obtained from literature and material and energy balances in an approach much like that of Boyle and Tobias.

An attempt was made …

The Attainment Of Ultrahigh-Solid Coating Colors, Robert C. Ziolkowski Dec 1975

The Attainment Of Ultrahigh-Solid Coating Colors, Robert C. Ziolkowski

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Ultrahigh-solid coating colors were mixed containing (#1) clay, three different ground calcium carbonates of varying particle size, and a styrene-butadiene latex as a sole binder. The resulting colors demonstrated proper coating rheology and were applied to a base paper by means of a blade coater. The coated paper was then evaluated for the physical properties produced.

An effective control of binder migration and water retention without the aid of a hydrocolloid was indicated by tests made on the coated paper. The paper coated with the ultrahigh-solid coating colors also depicted desirable finished properties of brightness, opacity, pick strength, ink receptivity, …

A Comparative Study Of Campus Environments At Three Church-Related Colleges, William K. Stob Dec 1975

A Comparative Study Of Campus Environments At Three Church-Related Colleges, William K. Stob

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate, compare and contrast the perceptions and expectations of second-semester freshmen in regard to several aspects of the campus environment at three church-related liberal arts colleges in western Michigan.

The review of the literature traced the origins and the development of private church-related higher education and outlined some rationale for the continuation of pluralism in American higher education. The review further indicated that church-related higher education appears to be caught in a period of self-doubt and uncertainty. Some studies have been conducted to assess the condition of church related higher education in America …
