Auditory Closure And Reading, Jean R. Harber
Auditory Closure And Reading, Jean R. Harber
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In contrast with visual perception, about which there is a larger body of knowledge, relatively little information exists concerning auditory perception and its relationship to reading. This fact is both surprising and troublesome as several researchers have found that auditory perceptual measures are better predictors of reading achievement than are visual perceptual measures (Blank, 1968; Linder & Fillmer, 1970; Muehl and Kremenak, 1966). It has been widely assumed that some basal level of auditory skill is related to normal language acquisition, school readiness, and academic achievement, particularly reading. Various auditory perceptual processes have been described, including the processes of discrimination, …
Reading Interests Among Fifth And Sixth Grade Children, Kathleen C. Stevens
Reading Interests Among Fifth And Sixth Grade Children, Kathleen C. Stevens
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article reports the results of an interest survey given to children in four fifth and sixth grade classrooms. The author especially wished to determine if the sex differences in interest reported by so many writers (Norvell, 1958; McKay, 1968; Beta Upsilon Chapter, 1974) were still in effect today.

Dyslexia: The Real Issues, Donald C. Cushenbery
Dyslexia: The Real Issues, Donald C. Cushenbery
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
One of the interesting philosophical issues or discussions present on the educational scene at the moment is that of the role of dyslexia as a cause for basic reading deficits. The purposes of this article are to present briefly some of the historical trends regarding the topic; analyze a few current definitions; outline several procedures for diagnosing the difficulty; offer a description of four techniques for dealing with the problem; and provide a response to three questions dealing with the real issues of dyslexia.
A Comparison Of Average Readers At Different Grade Levels, Frederick A. Duffelmeyer
A Comparison Of Average Readers At Different Grade Levels, Frederick A. Duffelmeyer
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many standardized reading tests yield separate scores for vocabulary and comprehension. Sometimes the vocabulary and comprehension scores for a given student are more or less (if not exactly) the same. In other cases, one is substantially higher than the other.

Why Do Kids Read?, Kathleen M. Ngandu
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This study attempts to answer two questions. First, what do elementary students believe is the most important reason for their reading? The second question also examines children's reasons for reading, but from the teacher's perspective - what do elementary teachers believe is the most important reason for their students' reading?

A Voice From The Shadows: The Novels Of Toni Morrison, Ardith A. Muse
A Voice From The Shadows: The Novels Of Toni Morrison, Ardith A. Muse
Honors Theses
The three novels of Toni Morrison to date deal with elements of both the feminine and the African consciousness. The dominant characters developed in her novels act within a socially isolated black community, and often in a largely or wholly female household. The values embodied in her novels, as well as the imagery and language, are derived in large part from African culture and archetypes of the feminine unconscious.

The Interrelationship Of Fiber Length To Titanium Dioxide Pigment Retention, Robert A. Hansen
The Interrelationship Of Fiber Length To Titanium Dioxide Pigment Retention, Robert A. Hansen
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A literature review is presented that reviews the various considerations of retention in papermaking. The definition of retention and the three methods of retention,(sieving, entrapment, and coflocculation), are reviewed. Coagulation and flocculation are respectively discussed. Zeta potential and the various methods with which it is measured are reviewed, as well as various factors that influence zeta potential. The role of fines in the retention of wet end additives in the papermaking process is also discussed.
An experiment is designed to evaluate the effect of fiber length on titanium dioxide pigment retention. The experiment involves the determination of an optimum level of …
Curl: As Affected By Filler Distribution, Larry L. Lince
Curl: As Affected By Filler Distribution, Larry L. Lince
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The objective of this study was to study the curl response of paper as affected by filler distribution, i.e. top-side, wire-side, or middle of the sheet, and to determine whether or not filler distribution plays a part in curl formation. Plybonded sheets were prepared which contained 17-20% ash. The filler content was positioned in various locations within the sheet. The sheets were subjected to relative humidities of 20-80%, and the curl response was measured. The maximum curl was produced when the filler was farthest away from the dryer surface. Minimum curl. was produced when the filler was closest to the …
Effectiveness Of Combination Solvent And Aqueous Deinking Of Waxed And Printed Papers, James A. Lanter
Effectiveness Of Combination Solvent And Aqueous Deinking Of Waxed And Printed Papers, James A. Lanter
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Investigation of badly contaminated paper as a source of secondary fiber is an area of growing interest to the paper industry. A process that can remove contaminates from high gloss, printed, waxed, and/ or polycoated specialty paper is the experimental part of this thesis.
A brief overview of major factors involved in secondary fiber recycling will be discussed, such as economic factors, new demands, and pressures placed on the recycling industry. (1, 2, 3)
Different methods of contaminate removal and deinking techniques are discussed with a listing of advantages and disadvantages of each. (The methods include principles involved in absorbing …
A Study Of The Models Describing Fines And Filler Retention By Utilizing Cationic Starch As The Retention Aid, Nen-Sen Chen
A Study Of The Models Describing Fines And Filler Retention By Utilizing Cationic Starch As The Retention Aid, Nen-Sen Chen
Masters Theses
Fines and filler retention under dynamic conditions was studied in this thesis work. Zeta potential of samples are also measured. Dynamic Retention/Drainage Jar and Lazer-Zee Meter were used to accomplish this work. The results have been analyzed by statistical methods. When cationic starch was utilized as a retention aid the pH affected its efficiency, probably because the charge of cationic starch was dependent on pH. This effect was detected by utilizing two-way analysis of variance to find the sources of its interactions with molecular weight and agitation rate. The mechanism was thus determined. At pH 3 and 4, charge neutralization …
Fetal Alcohol Effects: A Review Of The Current Literature And A Proposed Study Of The Possible Additive Effects Of Marihuana And Alcohol On The Fetus, Shirley Lange Kamp
Fetal Alcohol Effects: A Review Of The Current Literature And A Proposed Study Of The Possible Additive Effects Of Marihuana And Alcohol On The Fetus, Shirley Lange Kamp
Masters Theses
The purpose of this paper was to review the current state of knowledge regarding the effects of alcohol ingestion during pregnancy, to determine the specific issues that remain under speculation, and to develop a theoretical research design which might aid in determining the role, if any, of marihuana in compounding fetal alcohol effects.
The literature reviewed indicated that alcohol creates a continuum of fetal effects from mild abnormalities to the full fetal alcohol syndrome; current marihuana studies suggest possible adverse effects on the fetus. The research model was based on this evidence, the well documented usage of both drugs by …
A Study Of Opinions Related To Corporal Punishment: 1980, Susan J. Walz
A Study Of Opinions Related To Corporal Punishment: 1980, Susan J. Walz
Masters Theses
A traditional method of correcting errant behavior of young children has been the use of corporal punishment in the home and 'in loco parentis' in our public schools. Corporal punishment as a disciplinary method, stands on historical precedent and continued social practice, having found its way to America as part of Old World tradition and Puritan theology.
In an attempt to assess current opinion regarding corporal punishment in the schools, a twenty-two-item questionnaire, based on contemporary child development theory, was developed. Responses of two hundred eighty-one teachers and student teachers were studied for the purpose of finding differences in various …

The Effects Of A Transfer Of Stimulus Control Procedure, Probes, And Reinforcement On The Acquisition And Generalization Of An Intraverbal Repertoire, Steven John Braam
The Effects Of A Transfer Of Stimulus Control Procedure, Probes, And Reinforcement On The Acquisition And Generalization Of An Intraverbal Repertoire, Steven John Braam
Masters Theses
A deaf, mentally-impaired youth was trained to emit intraverbal responses within the same response class to verbal stimuli which were presented in daily probe sessions (e.g., "food" evoked "apple", "bread","hot dog", etc.). Training consisted of a transfer of stimulus control procedure. If an incorrect response was made, the therapist would re-present the verbal training stimulus and immediately present a non-verbal prompt (picture) which evoked a verbal response. Since the transfer procedure was only Implemented contingent upon incorrect responding, it resulted in longer delays to trade-in for back-up reinforcers in sessions where mistakes were made. Correct responding Increased only as training …

An Investigation Of Relaxation Training Effects And Generality Using Biofeedback And Verbal Instructions, John W. Kesselring
An Investigation Of Relaxation Training Effects And Generality Using Biofeedback And Verbal Instructions, John W. Kesselring
Masters Theses
Training and self-control conditions within each session were incorporated in a multiple Baseline design with replications across subjects. The generality of relaxation skills acquired through relaxation training to a self-control condition where the subjects relaxed without assistance was assessed. EMG biofeedback was initially employed as a training technique; however, it was not effective in assisting the subjects to relax. A training procedure using verbal instructions was then introduced to replace the biofeedback. Verbal instructions were effective in assisting the subjects to relax, and the relaxation skills tended to show generality to the self-control condition. To assess the effects of the …

An Analysis Of The Faunal Remains From The Schwerdt Site, A Late Prehistoric Encampment In Allegan County, Michigan, Michael J. Higgins
Masters Theses
Analysis of faunal remains from the Schwerdt site, a fifteenth century encampment on the Kalamazoo River, reveals a temporary late spring occupation with an exploitative strategy aimed primarily at the spawning sturgeon. The position of Schwerdt in a larger subsistence/ settlement system is examined through comparisons with other contemporaneous sites in the southeastern Lake Michigan region. Changes in subsistence strategies on the northern periphery of effective maize agriculture.

Teaching Self-Protective Behaviors To Preschool Children Using A Videotape Training Program, Paul James Yoder
Masters Theses
This study investigated the effectiveness of a videotape training program to teach self-protective skills to preschool children. Children were taught to say, "I have to ask my teacher/parent," and to run to their teacher/parent when presented with one of two lures commonly used by child molesters. The videotape incorporated the direct instructional techniques of active pupil responding; the model, lead, and test format; and use of minimally different stimuli to teach children to discriminate between correct and incorrect responses. The results showed that although none of the subjects showed any improvement in responding after only one viewing, five of the …
