How Students Make Book Choices, Karla Hawkins Wendelin, R Ann Zinck
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In an effort to learn the extent and variety of factors that influence students' book selection, the study reported here was undertaken. The researchers also questioned students regarding what they liked to read about, what authors they liked, and books they had recently read and enjoyed. A total of 688 fifth through eighth grade students enrolled in public schools in two small cities in Nebraska and California responded to a questionnaire. Numbers of respondents from both sexes were fairly evenly distributed across four grades.
The Mnemonic Value Of The Picto-Organizer For Word Identification Among Disabled Readers, Donna E. Alvermann
The Mnemonic Value Of The Picto-Organizer For Word Identification Among Disabled Readers, Donna E. Alvermann
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The present study was designed to compare the effects of a mnemonic strategy which utilized context to facilitate word recognition and identification with a context-free strategy. Specifically, disabled readers were taught to recognize and identify meanings for abstract words either through the mediation of a picto-organizer or through flashcard presentation. The idea of a picto-organizer evolved from an earlier study (Alvermann, 1980) in which students recalled a story using key vocabulary terms schematically arranged to show hierarchical and parallel relationships among words (see Barron, 1969). The picto-organizer provides pictorial clues to word meanings as they are used in the context …
Piaget's Theory Of Conceptual Development As It Applies To The Teaching Of Reading, Robert P. Craig
Piaget's Theory Of Conceptual Development As It Applies To The Teaching Of Reading, Robert P. Craig
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This essay will investigate Piaget' s theory of conceptual development as it applies to the teaching of reading. Piaget' s views are important as a corrective to much of the behavioral approach to reading-using contingencies of reinforcement to aid students in learning (memorizing?) basic units of language and in remembering linguistic rules. It is obvious that one can "remember" such rules but not be able to apply them to a particular situation. We will discover that this is Piaget' s main point in his criticism of behavorism.
Encouraging Recreational Reading Through Book Talks, Edward J. Dwyer
Encouraging Recreational Reading Through Book Talks, Edward J. Dwyer
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
children who have adequate reading skills rarely do any reading that is not specifically required in school. Reading for fun, and sometimes even required reading are frequently given a low priority when time for reading competes with sports, television, free play, music and dance lessons, etc. However, recreational reading is of critical importance for reinforcement of what is learning during reading instruction. The book talk is an excellent approach for motivating students to read outside of the classroom and during opportunities for free reading provided at school. Further, development of important oral communication skills can be fostered as well.
Content Area Reading Preparation: Effectiveness Of Four Methods Of Instruction, Lois A. Bader, Daniel L. Pearce
Content Area Reading Preparation: Effectiveness Of Four Methods Of Instruction, Lois A. Bader, Daniel L. Pearce
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The belief that secondary content teachers should have content reading as a course in their pre-service education is an idea that is gaining increasing acceptance. Surveys examining certification requirements show that an increasing number of states mandate a course in reading for secondary certification (Bader, 1975; Lamberg, 1978). This trend is also reflected in increased numbers of teacher training institutions that are now offering a content area reading course for their undergraduate secondary education majors, as compared to ten years ago.

Diagnostic-Prescriptive Reading Instruction: What? Why? How?, Earl H. Cheek, Martha Collins Cheek
Diagnostic-Prescriptive Reading Instruction: What? Why? How?, Earl H. Cheek, Martha Collins Cheek
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Thirty eager faces - thirty individuals with unique needs, backgrounds, learning styles, interests, and experiences - thirty students who need reading instruction. Reading is an area of major instructional emphasis in elementary and middle school classrooms. However, because there is no one best method to teach reading, no best material, or no special "tricks" which eradicate these individual student differences, the classroom teacher must decide how to provide the best possible reading instruction to meet a multitude of needs. Some school districts have suggested that classroom teachers implement diagnostic-prescriptive reading instruction. Inservice sessions, workshops, and materials have been used to …
Upgrading Evaluation Of Inservice Delivery, Joanne L. Vacca
Upgrading Evaluation Of Inservice Delivery, Joanne L. Vacca
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Evaluation is a bit like listening. As listening is commonly labeled the most neglected language art, evaluation is the most neglected component of inservice education. If it is included, the evaluation that's done tends to be one-dimensional. That is, it is usually summative (at the conclusion) and product-oriented (tangible results) instead of formative and process-oriented. Evaluation--if it is to be a worthwhile part of inservice or staff development--needs upgrading.
Using Radar To Zero-In On Content Area Concepts, Charles E. Martin
Using Radar To Zero-In On Content Area Concepts, Charles E. Martin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
RADAR is a strategy in which students build analogies that take advantage of their own knowledge in order to develop and reinforce concepts taught in the content areas. Using RADAR, students establish analogous relationships between the concept they are studying and a seemingly unrelated concept. While examining these analogies, they relate the new material to an old concept, something with which they are familiar. In the process of comparing the new to the known they are forced to pay attention not only to the details of the concept being presented, but also to the dynamics of the concept--the processes involved …

Strategies For Dealing With The Growing Censorship Issue, Nicholas P. Criscuolo
Strategies For Dealing With The Growing Censorship Issue, Nicholas P. Criscuolo
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Contrary to the First Amendment, there is a growing trend to ban certain books, magazines, and other reading material from American classrooms and libraries. Censorship has been on the rise for the past ten years and is escalating nationally. Kanewaha County, West Virginia; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and, Island Trees UFD on Long Island, New York, are just a few of the cities and towns that have censored books. The list is growing and the whole censorship issue is becoming a deep concern to librarians, school officials and school board members.

The Study Of A Laboratory Screw Press Washer As A Means Of Deinking Offset Newsprint At High Consistencies, Kim A. Anderson
The Study Of A Laboratory Screw Press Washer As A Means Of Deinking Offset Newsprint At High Consistencies, Kim A. Anderson
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The objective of this thesis is to study a laboratory horizontal screw press washer as an effective, yet economical, means of deinking offset newsprint wastes at high consistencies. The theoretical advantages of utilizing a high consistency deinking process include minimal water consumption, reduced and more concentrated filtrate volumes, low effluent solids and fiber loss, and minimal space requirements. The disadvantages include a relatively high unit power consumption, high capital cost, sometimes an inefficient amount of fillers and fines removed, and ink particles may get trapped at consistencies greater than 18%. Results proved many of these theoretical advantages and disadvantages. Also, …

The Effects Of Increasing Solids Concentration In Air Knife Coatings For Boxboard, Merri G. Onofrio
The Effects Of Increasing Solids Concentration In Air Knife Coatings For Boxboard, Merri G. Onofrio
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether high solids concentrations may be applied to air knife coatings for boxboard. Considerations were the effects of high solids on coat weight controllability and final sheet properties.
The study was conducted on a pilot air knife coater using coatings at 56-62% solids and containing .2 to .6 parts per hundred CMC as water retention aid. Finished sheet properties evaluated included brightness, gloss, smoothness, IGT pick strength, K & N ink absorption and glueability.
It was determined that solids levels up to 58% could be efficiently run providing machine speed did not …
The Feasibility Of Applying Solar Industrial Process Heat To Paper Machine Dryer Sections, Curtis J. Rollo
The Feasibility Of Applying Solar Industrial Process Heat To Paper Machine Dryer Sections, Curtis J. Rollo
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Fossil fuel deficiencies and escalating costs are presented. The application of solar industrial process heat (SIPH) to the paper industry is examined with focus on cylinder dryer sections located at the dry end of a paper machine in a non-integrated mill. Drying theory, as it relates to SIPH, is discussed in detail. Very high steam temperatures are deemed unnecessary for good dryer efficiency. Factors favoring application are listed, as are those U.S. installations similar to the type investigated. A fabric drying facility, using SIPH, is described with respect to the paper drying facility, using SIPH, is described with respect to …
The Church, Education And Third World Development, William W. Cobern
The Church, Education And Third World Development, William W. Cobern
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
The Third World is the world of underdeveloped and developing nations. As one insightful African noted the preferred term once was "underdeveloped" but now the more positive "developing" is used (Yoloye, 1980, p.vii). Both of these terms were originally used by Westerners to describe how far up the technological/industrial ladder non-Western nations have climbed. One might argue about the appropriateness of judging other cultures by one's own standard. In doing so one assumes at least tacitly if not overtly that his own culture is the superior one. At best this leads to paternalism towards the people of the culture in …
The Effects Of Wet End Chemical Additives On Recycled Filler Furnish, Jeff Oman
The Effects Of Wet End Chemical Additives On Recycled Filler Furnish, Jeff Oman
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Improvements in desired characteristics can be seen from wet and chemical additives and will be accompanied by some degree of negative results in other desired characteristics. Lab work is useful in identifying qualitatively the specific areas where negative and positive effects will be seen. The negative results must then be weighted against the positive gains.
The Britt Jar is a powerful tool for predicting pilot machine behavior and should be used with hand sheet data. Pilot machine data is included as verification of Lab findings.
A Study Of The Flow Of Pulp Slurries Through A Motionless Mixer, Brian F. Berger
A Study Of The Flow Of Pulp Slurries Through A Motionless Mixer, Brian F. Berger
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A study was conducted to determine the behavior of pulp flows through a motionless mixer. Specifically, the effects of stock consistency, pulp type, and number of mixing elements on the pressure drop across a motionless mixer were examined. An attempt was made to develop correlations between pressure drop across the motionless mixer due to pulp flows and the consistency of the pulp slurries. From the data generated by this study, it was determined that using the value of pressure drop across the motionless mixer to determine pulp consistency is not very feasible. However, the empirical data generated should be useful …

Social Action Organization Participation And Personal Change In The Poor: Part I, Robert D. Herman
Social Action Organization Participation And Personal Change In The Poor: Part I, Robert D. Herman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Evidence bearing on the hypothesis that participation by the poor in social action organizations results in personal change is inconsistent and open to diverse interpretations. This paper first reviews that evidence and then takes the first step toward a substantive reconciliation of the apparently inconsistent evidence - the development of a typology of social action organization forms. The typology, which is derived from the literature on poverty and organizational analysis, incorporates the elements of (1) inclusion of the poor, (2) resource base of organizational sponsors, and (3) output goal orientation. The typology will be used in Part I I to …
Pennsylvanian Deltaic Sedimentation In Grand Ledge, Michigan, Jeffrey R. Martin
Pennsylvanian Deltaic Sedimentation In Grand Ledge, Michigan, Jeffrey R. Martin
Masters Theses
Pennsylvanian outcrops along the Michigan Basin's southern/margin are composed of fluvial-deltaic and marine shelf sediments. Constructive deltaic facies include point-bar sandstones displaying erosional bases, channel lag, and upward decreasing grain size and sedimentary structures. Cross-stratification data indicate a unimodal, highly variant, northward-trending, paleocurrent pattern that deviates from regional paleoslope. Point-bar sandstones record delta plain deposition by meandering distributary channels. Channel margin facies include Lingula-bearing, interdistributary bay shales; overlain gradationally by laminated, flaser-bedded and rooted marsh shales and siltstones; and subbituminous swamp coal. Bay-fill facies are interrupted by lens-shaped, quartz-poor, fine-grained, crevasse-- splay sandstones.
Delta destructive facies--quartz -rich bioturbated sandstone-- suggest …
The Effects Of A Cumulative Review Procedure Upon The Acquisition And Retention Of Basic Addition Facts Under Mastery Learning Conditions, Michael Jeffrey Harshman
The Effects Of A Cumulative Review Procedure Upon The Acquisition And Retention Of Basic Addition Facts Under Mastery Learning Conditions, Michael Jeffrey Harshman
Masters Theses
The effects of cumulative review upon the acquisition and retention of basic addition facts were examined within a modified multielement baseline design. Subjects were two second graders enrolled in a tutorial program. After training (memorization to specific criteria) involving drill with flashcards, facts were practiced according to one of two procedures. One procedure (Interspersal Only) involved practice of newly trained facts mixed with facts known on a pretest. The other procedure (Cumulative Review) involved practice of newly trained facts mixed with facts learned during prior training sessions. The Cumulative Review condition was found to be more effective in terms of …
The Perceived Effectiveness Of The Borgess Human Assistance Program As Measured By A Checklist Of Key Components, Kevin G. Clark
The Perceived Effectiveness Of The Borgess Human Assistance Program As Measured By A Checklist Of Key Components, Kevin G. Clark
Masters Theses
This study investigated the success and perceived effectiveness of an employee assistance program. Phase I consisted of interviewing representatives of the ten companies that were the most frequent users of the program. Phase II examined the program's annual report. The results were tabulated and compared to a checklist of key components which gauge the effectiveness of a successful employee assistance program (Egdahl and Walsh, 1980). The evidence indicated that the program operates in accord with Egdahl and Walsh's checklist.
