Writing For Reading, Robert Karlin, Andrea R. Karlin Jan 1984

Writing For Reading, Robert Karlin, Andrea R. Karlin

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

For some time concern about the writing ability of students has matched the attention given to their reading development. Teachers of all subjects are urged to require their students to write more, and suggestions for helping students improve their writing abound. At the same time we see additional justification for stressing writing; improvement in writing might well lead to improvement in reading.

Internal Motivation And Feelings Of College Students In The Developmental Program, Anne M. Ferguson, Joe Bitner

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of the Developmental Education Program at Southeastern Louisiana University is to provide a program to meet the needs of students who enter the University with inadequate school preparation. One major problem facing the entering college student is a lack of basic reading skills which hampers the student's ability to follow classroom presentations, read required materials, organize and summarize content information, and interpret examination instructions and questions. Student deficiencies in the area of reading include low word recognition, poor meaning vocabulary, inadequate reading comprehension and slow rate of reading. The other pressing problem is the students' lack of confidence …

Ssr, Accountability And Effective Reading Instruction, Mark C. Sadoski

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Recently, SSR has amassed a research base which strongly suggests that it is of significant value in promoting reading achievement when combined with a regular program of reading instruction and that it has a positive effect on student reading attitudes and habits (Moore, Jones & Miller, 1980; Sadoski, 1980). SSR may also be a reading activity that has more points of contact with successful educational outcomes in reading than perhaps any other single reading activity.

Read First, Test Later: Meeting The Needs Of The 'Overskilled' Reader, Karen D. Wood Jan 1984

Read First, Test Later: Meeting The Needs Of The 'Overskilled' Reader, Karen D. Wood

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Is there really a problem with overskilled readers in our schools? Yes, but not necessarily with the kind of skill that suggests proficiency in reading. Instead, there is a problem when students are routinely subjected to a myriad of isolated, ordered skills all in the name of readin ginstruction. Workbooks and ditto sheets are common purveyors of "overskill." But the real culprit is an over-reliance on basal assessment tests for progress and placement; particluarly those which sacrifice comprehension in favor of decoding, structural analysis and reference skills to name a few. What actually occurs in the classroom to perpetuate "overskill?"

The Use Of Old Corrugated Board In The Manufacture Of High Quality White Papers, Rene H. Kapik Dec 1983

The Use Of Old Corrugated Board In The Manufacture Of High Quality White Papers, Rene H. Kapik

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Clean corrugated board waste was fractionated into its softwood/hardwood fiber components, repulped using a kraft pulping process, and bleached using a CEHD bleaching sequence in an effort to produce high brightness fiber suitable for use in medium to high quality white paper.

The papers produced has almost equivalent mechanical strengths and opacity, but possessed unsatisfactory brightness and cleanliness when compared to commercially manufactured bleached kraft pulps of identical softwood/hardwood contents.

Based on this experimental data, the use of recycled fiber from corrugated board as a fiber substitute in the manufacture of high quality printing and writing papers is not recommended …

Effects Of Ultrasonic Vibration On A Coating Slurry As It Dries On The Sheet, Craig N. Husted Dec 1983

Effects Of Ultrasonic Vibration On A Coating Slurry As It Dries On The Sheet, Craig N. Husted

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This thesis involves a study of the reaction of coating pigment slurries to ultrasonic vibrations during drying on a sheet of paper. The coating was done with a Meyer Rod and immediately transferred to the surface of a loudspeaker apparatus until dry. Several different coating formulations were used and evaluated with and without ultrasonic agitation. These coatings include combinations of #2 clay, delaminated clay, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and polystyrene plastic pigment. Frequencies of 25,000 Hz and 42,000 Hz were used as well as the control group which was not treated. The amplitude was the highest attainable with the frequency …

Cleaning And Upgrading Of Post Consumer Corrugated Containers As A Secondary Fiber Source, Daniel L. May Dec 1983

Cleaning And Upgrading Of Post Consumer Corrugated Containers As A Secondary Fiber Source, Daniel L. May

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

The use of secondary fiber as a source of raw material in the paper industry is now an important reality ingrained into papermaking. The reasons for using secondary fiber are many and diversified but most point to economy as the primary factor. With wood and virgin pulp becoming more expensive, secondary fiber will undoubtedly maintain its place in the industry and may increase in the future. Total paper production is approaching 88,000,000 tons. Of this total only 23,000,000 is recycled. With nearly 64% of total paper production going to waste either through landfill, incineration or other disposal methods it …

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of replacing cationic starch with a synthetic cationic polymer in the emulsification of alkenyl succinic anhydride for use in alkaline sizing.

Three methods of determining the validity of the hypothesis were investigated. The mechanisms encompassed with respect to polymer performance were emulsion stability, retention of ASA, and ASA hydrolysis.

Study Of Bagasse Pulps To Obtain Corrugated Medium, Maria A. Carbonari Dec 1983

Study Of Bagasse Pulps To Obtain Corrugated Medium, Maria A. Carbonari

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Bagasse was used as raw material to pulp various NSSC, Soda and Kraft liquors and evaluated as corrugating medium. A new pulping procedure with the M & K Digester was developed in order to reach maximum temperature at the shortest practical time.

It was found that a 10% Active Alkali at 5% Sulfidity and an NSSC liquor at pH 10 with 15% SO2 on pulp gave suitable strength properties. The NSSC cook gave a higher yield but a pulp with more shives.

Keywords: Bagasse, Kraft, Soda, neutral sulfite semichemical, corrugating medium

Effect Of Hot Supercalendering On Sheets With High Filler Loadings And Polypropylene Fibers Added, Michael R. Whitescarver Dec 1983

Effect Of Hot Supercalendering On Sheets With High Filler Loadings And Polypropylene Fibers Added, Michael R. Whitescarver

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This study investigates the effects of hot supercalendering on sheets with high filler loadings and polypropylene pulp added. An uncoated sheet that had sheet and optical characteristics similar to a coated number three sheet. was desired. Research was conducted in two stages, handsheet analysis and a machine trial on Western Michigan University's Fourdrinier Pilot Plant. The hot supercalendering of these sheets with 15% Pulpex resulted in a 111% increase in Scott Bond. Unconsolidated Pulpex has no synergestic effects with clay fillers for gloss, brightness, and opacity. Pulpex that has been consolidated does have a synergistic effect with clay for gloss.

Psychological Typology Of The Local Firm Certified Public Accountant, Paul John Otte Dec 1983

Psychological Typology Of The Local Firm Certified Public Accountant, Paul John Otte

Dissertations

This research expanded the study of psychological typology to the local firm Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Differences in type have been previously reported, based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), resulting from both level of authority and area of specialization in Big Eight firm CPAs. This study utilized the MBTI and a Personal Data Questionnaire to identify types and accumulate data related to the independent variables of level and preferred area of specialization. The MBTI operationalizes Jung's type theory and reports 16 possible Jungian types which were the dependent variables in this study.

The population of interest included individuals employed …

A Magnetic And Resistivity Survey Of Cork Street Landfill, Stanislaw Leja Dec 1983

A Magnetic And Resistivity Survey Of Cork Street Landfill, Stanislaw Leja

Masters Theses

Geophysical techniques such as magnetic and electrical resistivity methods are being increasingly applied in investigations of landfills.

For this survey, measurements of the intensity of the earth's magnetic field were taken at regular intervals along traverses. Resistivity readings were taken at selected intervals along the same or very similar traverses. Additional resistivity depth measurements or soundings were obtained at selected points in and around the landfill.

Profiles were analyzed for individual dump structures and for overall magnetic and resistivity response. Contour maps were drawn from the measurements at the site to depict broad trends or patterns. Deeper subsurface geology was …

The Effects Of Caffeine Alone, And In Combination With Nicotine, On Several Behaviors In Rats, Judith S. Devoe

Masters Theses

Several doses of caffeine-sodium benzoate (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 & 20.0 mg/kg, stated as salt) were administered daily by intraperitoneal injections (IP) for an initial twelve consecutive days which constituted Phase I. A probe-dose of nicotine (2.0 mg/kg) was administered in combination with each caffeine dose for the following seven days comprising Phase II. Removal of nicotine subsequent to the last day of Phase II initiated a second caffeine-only (nicotine withdrawal) condition, Phase III. Tests of locomotion and aggression ensued at various points of the study and water intakes and body weights were recorded daily, prior to injections. Overall, locomotion …
